Hayes is definitely one of those trades that could look terrible in 10 years, but at the same time I just can’t see how we can justify keeping him on our list playing SANFL next year when instead we could have a clear best 18 player walk into our side in a premiership window.

You only have so many list spots and so much cap space, we have to use those resources as efficiently as possible and if Hayes isn’t playing AFL then we have to ask ourselves the question.
Why is it hayes or dawson? Why would we need to make a choice when Hayes is contracted?

Hayes is too important and too hard to replace.

If dawson nominates port I believe we can do a deal that doesn’t shoot our selves in the foot.

How would we go about turning Clurey and draft picks into a young AFL ready KPD and Leek Alleer?

I'm hoping we could end up with Aliir, McKenzie, Jonas, (Clurey replacement), Lienert (also flanker), Alleer and Pasini as our tall backline options next season.

I’m not sure we can.

Petty is our best bet but he is contracted so think melb hold onto him. I also like petty and he’s our best bet but he’s also not proven to be a high level defender yet playing behind a great midfield next to 2 all aus level defenders.

Bazzo is the kid I want in the draft, but could go anywhere from 15-40, and is a few years away from holding down a spot (which is alright for us)

Alleer? Who knows? Has been talked about as a rookie or late pick but more interest in him means a team could go earlier on him?

Would Hayes actually be better off at Sydney? He’d be behind Hickey and a fit Naismith with Amartey and/or McLean playing as 2nd ruck/forwards.

If I were his manager I’d be telling him only to leave for a club where he is instantly best 22. There are potentially plenty of those clubs but Sydney isn’t one.

If he played 2's he'd be playing them in his home state half the time, where the form is taken more seriously. He'd want 1's games, but even playing in the VFL would be better than the SANFL. He has clearly outgrown it.

I watched some highlights of Dawson games and he reminds me of a left foot Burton. Basically a Bonner who can take a contested mark and work over an opponent.

Sure, but that's not what people seem to be indicating when they've posted.
Dawson's kicking is elite. His versatility is also high.
Down back or further upfield on the wing he will cut teams up
Exceptional overhead and when out on the wing is a target for getting out of the back half.
Forward entries into 50 also exceptional
Great kick for goal outside of 50

If it is thought to play him as a pure midfielder with more inside work, then no. His best spot is on the wing IMO.

"Forward entries into 50 also exceptional"
I'm sold.
Appreciate your detailed and informed posts by the way.

That’s not even remotely true.

Boak averages something like 6 clearances a game and is one of the premier inside outside mids in the comp.

Duursma is a hard running courageous wingman who’s shown none of boaks inside ability to date.
Let's come back to the number of clearances Duursma can get when he gets the chance to play in the centre square, hey?

It'll happen.

Crows wont give up pick 4 in a million years so we are in the box seat to get this done. If we came away with nothing else from this draft besides Jordan Dawson and Jase Burgoyne it would be good enough for me.

Absolutely agree. An excellent return.
We will definitely need to focus on recruiting a key forward and defender in the near future though and will most likely target a diamond in the rough with later picks this draft.

Without seeing him do it at afl level, or when he was running around in the juniors pre-draft it’s just a wild guess tho.
In the preseason trial game he played in the centre square for the possibles against Boak, Wines and (SPP I think?) and absolutely matched with them. Clean, burst from clearance. He has it in him.

Um no. Sorry to intrude, but I've seen more than few posts pushing him into midfield at which point I would say those who advocate that have not watched Dawson at all.

Dawson is not destined to play midfield, it would be an utter waste of his talent & elite kicking skills.
Play him on the wing
Play him downback if you need him to fill a gap
Play him in the forward line also an option because his kicking for goal is superb

But don't waste him in the mids ffs.
Wing is in the midfield you spud.
