Are you suggesting that Billings could be on $1.5 million per year then?
Nope- I imagine $600k PA would be overpaying him. You then have Ross to pay and can you tell me where the club will get $750k PA to pay Parker for 4 years as has been suggested several times.

St Kilda can bank on Jack Billings helping drive the club’s mission to return to September next season.
Billings is close to signing a four-year contract extension that will take the playmaker to 30 and remove his name from this year’s free agency list.

The biggest names from the 2013 draft headlined this year’s crop of gettable superstars – but they have all spurned rival offers.

The list of marquee midfielders who were quick to void their free agency status included Marcus Bontempelli (re-signed for four years at Western Bulldogs), Patrick Cripps (six years at Carlton), Zach Merrett (seven years at Essendon) and Josh Kelly (eight years at GWS), with Billings not far behind them.

However, Bulldogs free agent Mitch Wallis appears likely to leave the club that his father captained in 1989 in pursuit of greater opportunities after playing just six games as vice-captain this season.

Wallis, 28, has sat on a modest offer from Whitten Oval for much of the season and a fresh start is on the cards for the highly-respected clubman who took elimination final hero Cody Weightman under his wing last year.

The Saints and Billings are ironing out the finer details, such as bonus triggers, on a contract that will lock the silky half-forward in until 2025.

Billings burst out of the blocks in 2021 until a plantar fascia injury suffered in a pre-game warm-up curtailed that form.

The reliable matchwinner has played 144 games for the Saints, missing just six matches in the past five seasons.

Like many clubs, the Saints are waiting for the AFL to clarify rules governing the salary cap and list sizes before they advance their off-season plans.

The Saints currently hold picks No.9 and 46 in this year’s draft.

Coach Brett Ratten is adamant his team belongs in the top eight but underachieved this year, having won through to a semi-final in 2020.

Similarly, coach-less Carlton has already set itself a pass mark of leaping into the top eight next year.

Dual All-Australian Jack Steele, Rowan Marshall, Jade Gresham, Zak Jones and Billings are all in that sweet-spot age bracket of 24-26, while Brad Crouch and Tim Membrey are both 27.

But last year’s surge was powered by a stack of gimme goals kicked from 0-30m as Ratten’s eye-catching game plan encouraged players to target the hot spot with long and direct forward thrusts.

Rivals tried to force the Saints short this season and that tactic contributed to their potency fading, particularly in their inconsistent start to the year.

However, Ratten’s team finished the season 5-4, which included wins against finalists Sydney and the Brisbane Lions, and that improvement helped fortify confidence in what they had been working towards.

The off-season shopping list is likely to prioritise players who can gut run after some Saints found the return to 20-minute quarters challenging this year.

Some in club land also believe it would make sense for the Saints to consider recruiting Mason Cox (Collingwood), given Paddy Ryder will be 34 next season and Paul Hunter (out of contract) is every chance to join Shaun McKernan (retired) on the list of departures.

Former Magpies administrator Graeme Allan, who knows Cox, lobbed at St Kilda in 2008.

they took that bit about Mason Cox straight from this forum.

He's probably the opposite to a reliable match winner but he is reliable player. At the start of last year he was getting talked up on here as being better than Bont due to his early season consistent form. I was one of the first on here to start calling him vanilla and beige but he is very reliable. He's never one to strap the troops to his back but he's more of on old Volvo, he won't break down and he's solid, just don't expect to drag race him.

If he's signing on he's taking a hit to stay and that alone gives him my respect and we retain some experienced talent. Who knows perhaps he'll step it up now that he has some performance targets.
Can we actually see him stepping up a gear? That would mean up to the 25 possies a game and a goal a game IMO. Presume they might play him off a high HFF.

25 and 1 goal a game this year:

Petracca - 28.7 and 1.1
Bontempelli - 27.0 and 1.1

No one else even really close. I think if he does something like 22 and a goal most games (0.7 or 0.8) then we'd be happy.

He did it 2019, so is capable of it. Cant compare him to the 2 AA, those guys impact games nearly every week and have done it in finals.

He averaged 20 disposals and just under 1 goal this year playing with a significantly injured foot so with a good run of injury, he should be aiming for that 25 disposal, 1 goal mark.

Any ideas who we might be trying to bring to the saints in a coaching or head of fitness ??? Would like to see an ex saint come back , maybe Harvey , mcquater , x Clarke , shnieder or Lenny would be great!

Not sure, those guys are mainly assistant coaches as such. I think the fitness coach is a different specialised job.

Apparently swans have offered him $500k PA which is a bit low ball but they are under salary cap pressure. I think if they offered him $600k + 4 that might be enough. Will need that money to buy a 1 bedder in Bondi
$500k for 2 years I think I saw. No wonder his manager is looking around.

Trying to confirm it - although my involvement is fairly soft these days, but I’ve heard good word that Gary Ayres has been spoken to for a senior role. There’s also a fair bit of interest in luring Francou from the Suns.

Gary Ayers was just on SEN today, took up an a grade ammos gig.

Getting Parker as a UFA, Flynn as a moneyball (future picks would likely have to be involved) whilst keeping our first round and 2 NGAs would have me very satisfied for the trade/draft period.

Wouldn't mind a Libba late pick from the clouds on an electrifying small forward

Higgins looks good but can push up and isn't fast, don't really rate Butler at the moment, Gresh will rotate

Think Sharman and a nippy goal sneak that runs down defenders would make our forward line pop

I’d rather a stobie pole than Mason Cox.
All in on Parker and Flynn though.

Best case scenario,
Trade battle for pick 20
Let Ross and dunstan walk as fa
Get Parker as a fa that wipes Ross fa compo
Try accumulate some points for the academy kids, not sure how Lonie, long etc
Draft 2 best available mids with pick 11 and 20 odd
Pick 11- Tyler sonsie
Pick 20- Sam butler
Windhager and Owens

gives these 4 young mids a year to develop, then throw whatever we have at king at the end of next year.

2023 premiership team
B: Paton Howard highmore
Hb: coffield Wilkie Sinclair
C: hill crouch billings
Hf: membrey b.king Higgins
F:Sharman m.king Gresham
Foll:Marshall Steele Parker
Int: Webster Jones Clark sonsie
Sub: Byrnes

Emer: windhager bytel butler butler McKenzie Owens Allison Heath Connolly

I have NFI what you're trying to say. It sounds like you're suggesting that if we grossly over pay some average players then it will hinder getting Parker yes?
