That I don't disagree with. But Sunday as a whole isn't seen as a fan friendly day by majority of fans. There is a reason they have Sunday funday and other intensives on Sunday's to get people through the gate. And that was my point.

Friday nights you could argue don’t cater for young families and people attending the match from outside metro areas.
Saturday afternoons mean people associated with senior football in local competitions cannot attend matches.
Saturday nights are usually the night where functions occur ie birthdays, anniversary’s, going away events.
There’s always obstacles to overcome - hence why no time slot is good for everyone.

Still a bloody good crowd for the AFL in Sydney.

The night before the NRL got 15,000 to the SCG in what is supposed to be their heartland state and the NRL also gets a huge amount of publicly and general coverage in the Sydney MSM than either the Swans and Giants ever get!

Just crunching some rough numbers across the 9 games, that's an average attendance of around 34,000. That would likely be the biggest round for crowds other than round 1 this season. That's just off the top of my head though, I may be wrong, but some great results.

Some random observations on the crowd figures with 1 round to go:

• Collingwood are less than 4k short of the million mark
• Carlton need around 78k to reach the million
• Carlton can't catch Collingwood overall but only need 75k to top the home attendance ladder
• North Melbourne need at least 17k otherwise they will have the lowest home total for any of the existing Vic clubs in the last 50 years
• Melbourne will be the club to get nearest to its season record, probably ending up with its 3rd best total
• West Coast will have probably the biggest drop in total figures from one season to the next in history, ending up over 320k down on last year
• The AFL had been in danger of dropping below 6 million in total but a good last few rounds should see them get there

Overlap of fans? Not sure, but reckon at least a 20% of each Brisbane team fans would follow the other code as well. Traffic, parking, etc would be a factor. Just makes the sellout very impressive.

Drove into Brisbane for the game last night. My mate down here reckons there's been a huge positive sports vibe throughout the city and you can feel it (especially after origin and whatnot). Quite a few broncos fans have actually adopted the Lions as a second team to support during the last few years since they've been down the ladder which is a great thing to see. All I know is it's gonna make for a great atmosphere on Queen Street prior tonight

It's a bit of a quirk that Collingwood/Carlton is the 'Big 4' matchup that is the most durable and has the biggest base line for attendances yet it has the lowest record crowd of any of those matchups:

Collingwood/Essendon - 94,825 (1995)
Collingwood/Richmond - 92,436 (1977)
Carlton/Essendon - 91,571 (2000)
Richmond/Essendon - 90,564 (1982)
Richmond/Carlton - 90,151 (2018)
Collingwood/Carlton - 88,181 (2011)

In addition Collingwood has a higher record against both Melbourne (99,256 - 1958) and Hawthorn (92,935 - 1981) than against Carlton, so Carlton are only #5 on our list at the moment.

Would be great to see the head to head record fall. It is however always a big ask to get over 85k at any time.

*You almost certainly did not ask for it

i.e.

• if you read down the column for Adelaide you can see that West Coast has the best highest crowd against them (number 1), followed by Richmond (no 2), then Collingwood etc.
  
  
• if you read across the rows you can see how each team ranks against every other team, including their average position at the end (the lower the number the better)

You know it's a good table/graph when you have to include a lot of explanation
