I understand that theory.

But Jefferson may not compare favourably to the KPP's coming through next season.

And what would we do if we draft Jefferson now, over one of Tsatas, Mackenzie or Phillipou, banking on us being able to draft the one potential top 10 midfielder next season - only for him to be drafted before our pick? Do we take another KPP or reach again, but this time for a midfielder.

Right now the midfield is our biggest concern and we will be able to make a great selection to strengthen it.
I didn't think that next years draft had many talls slated for the top 10? I really, really like Jefferson a lot with his marking, athleticism and general footy nous. l wouldn't be shattered we took him if we think we'll gets mids and mid/forwards next year and if that's how highly Macka and is team rate him. This kids got something from what I've watched. Would still prefer Tsatas however as unlikely as it is.

I think next year's top 10 looks like it's going to be full of KPP's. There's more chance of us taking one then instead of reaching for one in this draft.
Not sure if this is case at all - there’s a suns nga and archer Reid (200cm tall) but rest are not kpf from the rankings I’ve seen (happy for Davo or td57 to correct me here).

Nate Caddy looks to be ~193 next year and plays like a perfect modern CHF. Daniel Curtin is a menace off half back but has shown he can still excellent as a half forward, and would 100% be in the conversation at our pick if we had pick 2. Duursma is only 188cm, but has the athleticism to play tall. The same can be said about Koltyn Thostrup, more of a medium forward but more than capable aerially to play as a CHF. In terms of true full forwards, Reid is the standout, but Pat Weckert kicked 8 goals as aun under-age in his SANFL reserves debut and Will McCabe has a very similar athletic profile to Jefferson. So it's true that key forwards aren't flooding this draft through, but there's plenty of forwards there. If we were picking at 6, for example, we would be able to get one of Caddy, Archer Reid, Duursma, Curtin, or Koltyn as forward options, with McCabe in the wings.

For what it's worth, I'd target a tall forward with one of our picks. One of Keeler and Gruz with our 2nd or Lemmey with a 3rd could go a long way in a few years.

Thanks for the informative post. What type of players are Throstrup and Weckert, don't know much if any about them? Are Duursma, Caddy or Curtin capable of becoming very good mids as well though?

I do really like Keeler, fingers crossed he's still there at our pick, or we add another second from Essendon.

I think lemmey is the one I’d pick with something in the 40s he played forward and back so dual chance to make it. I really liked his interview he seemed honest about his form drop off and hungry to prove people wrong which aligns to our draft people with the right qualities I would think. Also think tigers want him at 53 so would be good to get in early don’t want the poor kid learning about good bloke qualities from Tom lynch!

Koltyn Tholstrup | 188cm 80kg
Strengths:
Marking
Contested Ball Winning
Scoreboard Impact
Kicking inside 50
Composure in Packs
Athleticism
Strength

Improvements:
Kicking (Often kicks while under pressure)
Endurance
Forward Craft

Very similar to Dangerfield, Humphrey, and DeGoey as a powerful athlete with great impact metrics. He has good foot skills when in space, but is often getting the footy with a man hanging off him and his disposal% suffers for it. Strong mark, great on the ground, and a solid footballer with fundamentals and a good sense for goals. Needs to build endurance to play as a mid full-time, and while his one-on-one marking is great his leading patterns and pack marking are just a little rough. He wouldn't play as a mark-up forward though, but as a CHF I'd love to see him push up the ground, present as an option coming out of halfback and power it in. If he grows another 3-4cm and presents as a better hit-up forward, he could just be the most impactful player in the comp. Incredibly similar to Duursma and Caddy really, but with an explosive and athletic touch that makes him an enticing prospect. I took him for the Saints in the BigFooty phantom draft, so I think I'm a touch higher on him than a few other punters.

Patrick Weckert | 190cm 84kg
Strengths:
Contested Marking
Forward Craft
Strength
Goal Kicking
Straight-Line Speed

Improvements:
Ground ball disposal
Endurance
Versatility
Composure
Free Kicks
Limited Exposure

I haven't seen much of Pat, but from his reserve game, his league game, and a few u18s games he looks impressive. A bit of a brute in his game style, he crashes packs incredibly well and acts as a freight train out of the goal square, barreling forward with impressive speed and force before descending upon the contest and muscling out the mark. He isn't an agile prospect, and he gives away a few free kicks we could do without, but he's a bread-and-butter forward. Honestly, he reminds me of Kozi and Callow, and I wouldn't be thinking of him in the first round if the draft was tomorrow, but as a 17-year-old he's shown remarkable forward prowess. Let's just hope he plays out a good season at league/reserves level and shows a bit more of his upside.

I won't go as in-depth on Duursma, Caddy, or Curtin, but as for their midfield potential:

Duursma's best position should be as a forward, but he'll run through the midfield and provide class if needed. His forward craft, overhead marking, and composure in tight spots around goals are astounding, and would probably be a bit wasted in the midfield. Similar to Sheezel, he's a great midfielder but a superb forward. If we needed a mid full-time, he would definitely be able to fill the role.

Caddy is a Centre Half Forward through and through, but his work through the guts has excited me. He is a master of my new favourite buzz word "forward craft". But honestly, his reading of packs, leading patterns, marking overhead, movement at ground level, and composure with the ball in hand is outrageous for a teenager. And yet, in the last few games of the season, Northern played him as an inside midfielder. I was impressed, he knows how to move people out of stoppages and position himself at the feet of the ruckman, and has surprisingly clean hand skills for a key forward. I still think he's best as a CHF or third tall, but if he runs through the midfield well he's another with true superstar potential.

Curtin is an interesting one. On the surface, you'd have to say he should never attend a centre bounce. He's a DGB-style intercept defender who plays off his man and disposes of it out of the backline with long, clean bullets to his midfielders. He's had good games forward, but he's made a name for himself as a back. But now I've thought about it, there's every chance he kills it as a mid. He's so composed in hand with the footy, he sort of reminds me of Blake Hardwick with his composure in spite of the five opposition within a metre of him, but his athleticism and reach make him a menace on the run and should enable him to get his hands to the footy first. In reality, I can't say he's going to be a midfielder without seeing him play there, but if pressed he could be a special talent. He'd still be more valuable as a key position player, his marking and athleticism make him devastating as a backman and his games as a forward are just as good as his games as a back. He could show up as an athletic Hustwaite-type player this year, but I think most teams will develop his talents as a tall before they try and cram him into endurance, weight, and stoppage training to force him into the midfield.

American Beer is pretty piss weak!. But I know what you meant: Bear.
Based on nothing more than in depth study of this entire thread, my preference for the draft would be Tsatas, Mackenzie, Phillipou.

BTW: The above statement may need to be revised with the recent emergence of micro-breweries here. The beer I most recently had on tap was brewed in Anacortes Washington and was advertised as 8.6% ABV. In speaking with the brewer at a local event, that particular batch actually tested just north of 11% ABV. If that's "weak", what the heck are you drinking down there?????

People think Budweiser and Carlton are beer. They're wee flavoured wheat water.

Spend your day at a brewery and start your journey down a delicious and dynamic rabbit hole.

Hopefully we recruit more high quality Double Hazy IPA's than mid-strength Great Northerns in this season's draft (just to bring footy back into the conversation via beer analogy).

I'm thinking a Strong Ale would be handy in the guts...
Anyway, there's an entire thread in the Lounge that has gone silent for far too long!

Beer is for flogs who can’t handle their bourbon
Steven, Steven, Steven. If you are going to talk sh!t like this, I don't care if I miss a thing.

This guy is a class act. Would love him.
Same for me. Size, strength, seems composed and penetration with his disposals - not just with his kicks but also his handballs (albeit based on the only one I saw at the 1.41 min mark of the highlights).

Bourbon is for people who drink Scotch and say "This, but make it terrible"
Scotch is for Whiskey drinkers who say “this, but distill it with moldy socks”.
