The case against is that he plays like a young Luke Hodge, only bigger and quicker. We can’t have that now can we. 🤦‍♂️
Interesting that the only person to rise to the challenge of making a case against Philipou is someone who is clearly a fan.

However, the majority of posters clearly prefer others (Tsatas, if available and Mackenzie have the bulk of the support). I would really like to know what makes Tsatas, Mackenzie or anyone else for that matter, a better pickup than Philipou.

Vickery is more a small defender. Someone to potentially look after the elusive forwards pockets like Cameron or Stengle. Plus if he comes on quickly it could allow Hardwick to play elsewhere for the next few years.
Isn't that what Josh Morris is transitioning to?

I am a bit over our constant drafting of medium and small defenders or having to turn our medium and small forwards into defenders. :)

We don't seem that great at developing forwards. We need to draft more natural forwards and hope some of them can make it in the front half at AFL level.

This does not look strog enough for the future, particulrly if Moore and CMac move up in to the midfield...

FF: Butler - Lewis - Greene/Serong/Brockers
HF: CMac - Kosi - Moore

As the resident Phillipou disbeliever, I'll take a crack.

Matt is a great player, but I'm uncertain that he can develop into a full-fledged midfielder. He's not as quick with his hands as he seems, a lot of wayward hand passes in a panic, and he can drift in and out of games. I don't see him winning a lot of his own footy, he gets out in space well but as a contested body I'd like to see him take contact a bit better. He has some exciting plays, but through whole games he can just sit outside packs and be a bit of a ball watcher. His disposal isn't as elite as you'd want either, some booming kicks that look great but his short and sharps get a bit too much under them. This high up in the draft you just want a bit more, and a few other players show it. Mackenzie is a very complete midfielder with the size, speed, and skill that you want from a top-line midfielder. Humphrey has rather insane strength and agility, with a mounted heap of potential and only one really major flaw that can definetly be worked on. Tsatas is an insane prospect with athleticism, composure, and impact metrics through the roof. Phillipou has a ton of upside, but right now I'd take Tsatas, Humphrey, Mackenzie, and Clark ahead of him as midfielders and Hunphrey ahead as a medium forward. That groups sustained impact through whole games is just that extra level ahead.

Have you seen Mackenzie drift forward or rest in a FP? If so, is he dangerous as a Forward (has craft?) & in your opinion, will it translate to AFL level?

FWIW Twomey just spoke about Phillipou on his road to the draft podcast and where he might land.

He mentioned just about every club around our pick except us.

Not sure that means anything though.

As far as I've seen he's played as a half-forward for Vic metro and struggled to really work himself into the game, but when he's moved forward as part of the midfield group he can look really dangerous. He's not a natural overhead player, but he has a good boot on him and can find the goals from a decent way out. I wouldn't bank on him as a long-term forward, more similar to the CMac role where he starts off half-forward and pushes further up to be a part of the transition out of half-back.

Gee whiz, a bit of Birchall in these highlights. Do we dare add another half back flanker? If we see Day's future further up the ground as well as Scrimshaw on occasion it's a no brainer.
Spot on. We have so many people(I'll be nice) in here who think every kid drafted, not only will play next year,
but must only be selected to play where we need help right now.

How dare they stay with us for 5 or 6 years!

Thanks - makes sense and explains where the weaknesses are.

Agree that we need small forwards more than small defenders, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take a potentially good one who's right under our noses. By the time he's ready for senior footy there's every chance Morris will be gone. How will our lockdown small defender depth look then?

Agree wholeheartedly. If he is available after pick 40 we simply must take him. We aren’t at that stage of a rebuild to think too hard on positional needs we need talent everywhere and even if thinking positionally we only have hardwick and Morris as small defenders. Seems tough with pace and a nice decision maker and solid kick what’s not to like? If we end up with an excess we can always trade them to fill holes in a few years time when our future challenging team structure takes shape.

Absolutely, it’s best available at each selection this draft I reckon. Developing list and really only one all Australian level player there’s no logic in selecting for position. Any position is up for grabs from what I can see.

He seems to go alittle missing in general play aswell.

From all the draft threads gut feel is we end up taking 6,22 (for dogs f2) 24 and 36 and probably vickery late with Lawrence f/s. In true Murphy’s law tradition worried the players I want at those picks are about 2 picks before then. If we got any of these listed at our picks I would think job well done
6-tsatas Mackenzie (excusing a norf inspired wardlaw or sheezel Xmas miracle)
22/24-hollands hotton George jones konstanty
36-magor Ryan lemmey d’aloia
Another late pick (outside vickery Lawrence)-leary MacDonald schuback binns teal long

There’s a more than fair chance that when it comes to our pick we’ll have the choice of at least 3 of the following players.

Tsatas, Humphrey, Phillipou, Clark and MacKenzie.

Tsatas being there at our pick relies on Essendon taking the Pou or Humper at their Pick. Suns won’t take him, and are more likely going to take Ginbey.

What the Bombres do at their pick will dictate the rest of the top 10, but I’d bet they’re a more than 85% chance to just take Tsatas off the board.

I like Phillipou.

For mine I take Tsatas and Mackenzie ahead of him simply because of established form in a particular role.
I reckon we need a ruck rover. As in all day knows how to find it, extract it, be around it for the outlet, run away from a contest, use high level skill to transition it, and do so over and over and over and over and.......well, over.

I go Mackenzie first only because I reckon he's done ALL the roles of a ruck rover more, with greater established reviewable ooh la la execution of kicking and hand balling skill. Tsatas looks more Fyfe for me, that kind of could be anything athlete who plays on and around the ball but whose skill by foot is that next level down. Maybe more youtube highlights at the end of his career, but which of the two get the team playing at it's highest COLLECTIVE level.
Mackenzie for mine.

Phillipou seems to have played a little more all round the ground from HB to Forward, and as others have said maybe more outside.
Could he become a near AA ruckrover? Maybe, probably, I think he's really effing good.
But I'm not sure, and in putting together a young core of mid players who play off eachother, I reckon Mackenzie or Tsatas would form a fantastic partnership with Newk and whoever else ends up being in there.
As would Wardlaw, should he drop.

Reckon were in a really good spot to pick up a player who meets the requirements of our team in the guts.
Hate to see us trade down.

I watched the first half of round 16 Oakleigh vs Sandringham last night.

Tsatas is such a no brainer. If you need to convince yourself just go watch that half.

The scum will take him and will let parish leave as a DFA.

Calling it now, we end up with the humper.

Do you think if Ashcroft wasn't around Mckenzie would be viewed a lot higher. I mean, would he have stood out even more with Vic metro to the point he'd be considered the top pick or top 3 in the draft?

But replace Kosi with Ramsden and then it looks a hell of a lot better. I have high hopes for Ramsden.
