The GWS pick that got bid on would’ve cost us less with the same player being picked up. Why weren’t the list managers at GWS and Hawks involved in talks?
Judging by the expression on the GWS list teams faces, they had no idea it was going to happen - and you can't trade during the bid matching window. There was nothing they could do.

Because then they would have lost 20 instead.

Rowston, Future picks for 17 + 20
Or
Rowston for 17

Tough situation they were in.

So it's settled. We simply need to finish higher than the Dogs next year now 🤷‍♂️

Based on current ladder positions it's a 5 pick downgrade.
Of course it looks worse if Bulldogs get better and we fall down.
But we could also improve enough that any difference is marginal.
And it could all be moot if McCabe improves enough to be a first round selection.
Future trading really is a gamble.

Regardless we get a player we rated highly. Sydney get a good deal. Seems win/win personally.

Weddle has the athletic traits that only go in the elite end of the draft. I'm pretty excited to have him on board, reminds me of how I felt after we snapped up Will Day.

has top level endurance, is lightning

To those of you that fall in the category of burnt cheese by now, calm down for a moment. The above traits are what you have to focus on with Weddle. A 193cm tall with speed, endurance and marking capability, who can kick goals, defend and play midfield, DON'T GROW ON TREES! He is incredibly rare in any draft.

Exactly! Spot on!

Seems very odd, there was a win win opportunity for both clubs.

i dont think you guys are thinking this through.

If we had traded with gws after Sydney's bid, Sydney would have held their pick to choose Weddle and we would have traded up for a player who was gone.

We wanted Weddle. He wasn't going past Sydney. We knew this. The gws bid/match has nothing to do with it.

GWS also would have lost 22 and 23 had they traded their pick away after Sydney's bid, so they valued Howsten at the bid, matched it and kept their next two picks.

If anything it would have been lose lose for both clubs.

I would’ve thought Rowston + hawks 2nd pick + a future 3rd is a decent deal.

Anyways from what I’ve been told they couldn’t trade that pick while it was under a bid.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s remaining picks

What if we finish, say, 10th next year? We’re not going to be as bad as some people think we’ll be. We have a very very talented list!

So with the example above, we effectively gave up picks 27, 27 and 45 for pick 18. I don’t think that’s too bad of a trade.

AND - what if the Bulldogs finish below us next year (which is a possibility TBH)? We’d still have an early second round pick plus our first rounder.

Drafting Weddle doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve simply drafted another tall 3rd defender to add to our long list of defenders. Perhaps we drafted him to free up Scrimshaw or CJ into the midfield? Or perhaps we’ve drafted Josh with the intention of putting him on the wing? Just look at his highlights - he has speed. And lots of it. He’s very versatile, can play multiple positions and absolutely smashed the Combine!

Welcome Josh! I’m looking forward to watching you and Cam Mackenzie tear it up in our brown & gold for many years to come 🤎

There is absolutely no chance the Doggies finish below us.

We've got Amon, Stephens, McKenzie, Meek and Weddle to the club so far - all are AFL ready come round 1 and all will be 100 AFL games+ players for us.

We also have a couple of picks left this year and a full deck of picks next year.

We haven't given up anything - picks are useless unless they're turned into consistent AFL players, and every single player we've brought in this year are 100+ AFL game players. It's nothing but Ticks all round.

It's been a great off season to date. Looking forward to who we pick up tomorrow, hopefully it's another 2 x 100 AFL game players - not interested in picks that convert to players who end up playing sweet FA AFL games.

Give me AFL ready players with upside all day everyday and the 5 guys coming in so far are exactly that.

I didn't entertain the prospect because he doesn't fill a need.

I feel like we missed the boat on getting George, Clarke or Kostanty which is getting urgent up forward with an ageing Breust and Brocky having an uncertain future.
I did tell you this could happen 😜

THE RANCE-LIKE DEFENDER IN SIGHTS OF PIES, HAWKS, BOMBERS

A defender who has drawn comparisons to former Richmond star Alex Rance has “come with a bullet” in the second half of the year to firm as a top draft prospect.

Recruiters believe Oakleigh Chargers backman Josh Weddle has “enormous upside”, which has seen him attract significant interest ahead of this month’s national draft.

Weddle had looked a mid-to-late draft pick early in the year but is now expected to be snapped up somewhere between picks 15 and 30 on the back of his rapid improvement.

He measures 192cm but can play taller given he has a great athletic profile and is ultra competitive.

“He’s athletically very strong. He’s explosive. He can play on talls, he can play on smalls,” Oakleigh talent manager Jy Bond said.

“AFL clubs are pretty excited about him and his ability to play both ends – mid, back, forward. He’s come on really well.”

Weddle ranked second in the running vertical jump at the national draft combine and also posted impressive results in the 20m sprint and 2km time trial tests.

He is believed to have attracted interest from clubs including Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon – who all hold picks in the 20s.

Clubs including Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon have been linked to defender Josh Weddle.

Not a bad turn over...

McEvoy ---- Meek
Mitchell ---- Stephens
O'Meara ---- Mackenzie
Gunston ---- Greene
Shiels ---- Amon
Howe ---- Weddle
Hartigan ---- Pick 36
Phillips ---- Pick 45
Downie ---- Vickery
Callow ---- Rookie Pick/SSP/MSD
Saunders ---- Rookie Pick/SSP/MSD

I wouldn't mind taking Van Es, McCallum, Teal late, and Hayes or Weddle with our 2nd despite them being defenders, their upside is immense and with all their athletic traits I think you can afford to take one if you think they're good enough. Van Es and McCallum especially could be great forwards and Weddle reminds me a bit of Crisp where he could be a monster contested midfielder.
I'll throw my own hat in the ring to claim Weddle as "my guy". A bit late and a tad inaccurate with where we picked him, but I still love the pick.

You can’t exactly say we’ve given up nothing while claiming players that haven’t pulled on a jumper or played a handful of games are players who will play 100+ games for us.

Would I like to have given up less? Sure, but that’s the price you pay to move up. Hopefully our gamble pays off and Weddle is a serious player and McCabe goes in the first round next year.

There’s no exact science here. Just got to hope the club gets it right.

Some of the melts in here remind me of when we called out Will Day...

Weddle looks a serious footballer :thumbsu:

I get the impression that Day will play in the midfield next year and the club sees Weddle as one the potential players in the back six.

Some context for our pick trade. Geelong gave up Pick 38, 48, 55 a future second and a future fourth for Pick 25 that they used to trade for Bruhn. I'm not at all unhappy to pay what we did for Weddle who we were clearly set on.

Also, if memory serves correct, Sicily played off the back of stoppages in the last couple of games. Whether that was just an experiment, or they want to make it permanent we shall see

We knew Collingwood would have picked him at the next selection so it was at 18 or never.
That was just in reference to my pre-draft comment on liking Weddle if he fell to our second. Very happy with the trade-up, we paid the price we were happy with to get a player we clearly see as a key contributor next season and for many seasons after. Get him in the squad Sam.
