Saints Draft Board
Pick 10 - Elijah Hewett.
186 cm 82 kg. Midfielder. Swan Districts.
Taking best available here, but also looking at positional needs for the Saints they are set for flankers and have a reasonable spine but another strong inside leaning midfielder is a clear requirement given the quality of their on ball brigade. Marshall and Steele is a decent stoppage combination, another mid who can extract but also use the ball on the outside is going to hold St Kilda in good stead. During Ross’ early tenure at the Dockers a lot of early picks were used on flankers or players who were then purposed into outside players – Sheridan, Crozier, Simpson et al. The Dockers bread and butter during their era of contention was a strong stoppage cohort and I think the Saints would benefit from building a similar squad, focusing on winning bulk clearances and filling out the best 22 with role players along the flanks, which is partly what they have done already.
I see Hewett as one of the more bankable prospects in his draft cohort and IMO should be at least considered in the same draft rage as someone like Tstatas. He has a high performance floor with a reasonable ceiling too, given his smarts, kicking skills and athletic profile. There are elements of Cerra in his play and his kicking style is very similar. I don’t see him as stoppage specialist, but someone who acts as a first receiver who brings outside players into the play though he is capable of winning clearances. He is generally clean and reads the play exceptionally well, following up on chains of possession. He had a reasonable Championships and had a couple of standout performances which he clocked up 30 odd disposals and kicked a couple of goals. His ability to hit the scoreboard is another big plus – he senses opportunities and works hard to capitalise.
He’s definitely one of my favourite players in this years pool and it would not surprise me to see him gone before West Coast’s second pick.
Pick 30 – Anthony Munkara
188 cm 77 kg. General Forward. West Adelaide
I’m struggling to get too excited about this draft crop, both in terms of the breadth of talent available and upside of the prospects at the top end of the draft. I see Munkara as a guy with a huge ceiling – likely one of the most naturally talented in this cohort – and I can see similarities to both Liam Jurrah and Cyril Rioli in his play. He is an instinctive footballer and has real ability to take on the play and hits the scoreboard effortlessly. He is still rounding out his game and Munkara is quite raw and learning how to use his height to full effect. He plays closer to a traditional small forward but as he fills out and develops the contested side of his game he will become an even more difficult matchup. He is clean at ground level and his creativity and ability to find space by outmanoeuvring his opponents is impressive.
He will likely require a few years at VFL level to build on the defensive side of his game. He’s a little enigmatic and his concentration waivers too much within the span of a game, but if he can correct this he will be a dangerous player at AFL level.
Pick 35 – Tom Scully
202cm 89kg. Tall Forward. West Adelaide
Teammate of Munkara, I’m taking another upside player here, and I like Scully’s contested marking and he is reasonably athletic for his size. I’d liken him to Mitch Lewis without the same aggression at the contest. Scully uses his read moreso and uses his extra height to win marking contests. I see a tall forward as a need for the Saints as the have King as a clear target, but their next set of taller options are either mid-sized players eg Membrey, or resting ruckman. Hayes can be used as another target, but the Saints should be aiming to be build depth in their key forward stocks.
Scully is a pure forward and kicked plenty of goals at Under 18 level, but like Munkara he will need a couple of pre-seasons and a lot of development at VFL level to build his game. He can compete at junior level due to his height, but will be found out against more physically developed senior defenders. He reads the play well though and works to create separation from his opponent. He will benefit exponentially from having King as the Saints main target and can also partly model his game on the kind of player King has become – eliminating opponents with his athleticism and leap and expanding his contested game incrementally.

Port Adelaide has entered the chat.
Love what Port are building and expect them to trend upwards over the next few years. Still a few older and wiser heads playing key roles but the youth they have coming through is very impressive across the park.
Heading into this I looked at Port's list and it's pretty clear to me young talls are a real weakness. Forward they're still reliant on Dixon though Marshall has finally started to come on. Georgiades is real quality but more a third tall and there are question marks over his desire to head home. Finlayson is a crab.
Down back is a bit of a dog's breakfast. In recent seasons they've largely gone undersized with the likes of Burton and McKenzie playing tall. Jonas always gives his all but is undersized and getting on. Clurey is still around but not a regular and rightly so. Aliir is excellent but at his best when allowed to play loose.
Clearly Port would like to add to their tall stocks and I expect them to call out one or even two in the upcoming draft.
Lemmey was my #1 target. 12 months ago he was in the conversation for pick one. Has fallen away this year but I suspect if Port have the opportunity to pick him here they'll call his name out very quickly.
Other than him there aren't many I'm rushing to pick so I'm pretty happy to wait until my next selection and see where things are at. Instead I'll bolster the midfield with someone who I wouldn't be too surprised to be picked higher come the real thing.
Talls are a real need for Port but I'd say clearance mids are probably next in line. Boak is their best but he's 50 odd now. Wines excellent but beyond that we're looking at Willem Drew. The cupboard is relatively bare.
So with that in mind, with pick 36 Port Adelaide selects Adam D'Aloia.
Strong inside mid who excels at clearances. He may well be the best clearance player in this draft. Not great athletically, not great by foot, but a strong body and a fantastic competitor with leadership credentials.
Screams a Sydney type IMO. Someone a club could 'reach' for and it wouldn't surprise if his name is called out towards the latter part of the first round.
Local boy too which always helps. Port haven't lost too many from homesickness but I would imagine they'd be pretty happy to pick someone here that they won't have to worry about in that regard.
Next up is TerryWallet with Melbourne.

Medium defender who has nice running power and provides rebound off half back, something I think north lacks.Is also a decent intercept mark. Has some scope to also play on a wing in time. Strongly considered Rowston who is good value here but think north have enough of his type

With all the players I wanted all gone now...
Had a look through Sydney's list they are pretty strong all over...
Compared to Carlton their KP stocks are far superior in numbers (only)

Has decent speed for a player of his size 3.28 over 20m... Likes to follow up his play, but has ok defensive traits...

Great pick. Best value pick so far. Had I gone for the midfielder in Tsatas first instead of Sheezel I would’ve balanced it out with Clarke as my second pick, it was a very close call. Quite a few clearly inferior players have been picked ahead of him in this draft.
Thks for dropping in the pick i PM'ed you for when i was offline yesterday TENACIOUS. As the first of the three i listed i was a bit pleasantly surprised to see he lasted, but would have been content for the other picks Gilbey or Clarke.
Darcy Jones was the player left at this pick, i felt could best make an impact at AFL level. Always a risk with a player so small, but with his ability and tools, i think he's a player who can be a positive at AFL level.

Pick 43 - Gold Coast Suns - Luke Teal (188cm - Defender)
Was ranked much higher at the start of the year, but has drifted in rankings after an interrupted season, where he didn't get a lot of exposure. I like what he brings to the Gold Coast, a smart running rebound defender who uses the ball well. Could get some midfield minutes as he builds his tank. Can play as a lockdown defender - has performed well against the likes of Sheezel.
Additionally, he's another Oakleigh Charger, perhaps not a huge consideration, but given our first pick was the Charger's Elijah Tsatas, it might be that little bit extra that helps (like Rowell/Anderson) to keep the pair long term with the club.
