You're doing better than me bedders. Up til last year whenever someone would say 'RWO' I thought they were talking about a person, ROK, LRT etc.

I kept thinking "who the **** is this RWO bloke everyone keeps getting information from"
That's how silly it was , there were quite a few on both , maybe BF thought club pages were a threat . Found it strange

RWO isn't the great 24 game / 2 goal hero Ryan Winston O'Connor ?!?

I feel so gormless.....

In an "I'd like to speak to the manager" mood atm so while I'm at it... you know what I'm mourning? The death of the "First to Fourth Years Fortnight."

I'll preface this by saying that it's great that more and more senior players are returning to training early. More power to them. But the first two weeks of pre-season training are specifically for the first to fourth year players. For most of them it's the only two weeks of the year where we'll actually get a chance to see some of them (which may sound like a dramatic statement, but ask yourself how many times you've seen Will Gould or Marc Sheather or Lachie McAndrew on your social media feed? Or how many times you saw Angus Sheldrick or Norm Smith Rankin this year at all?)

Instead, who do the AFL account on Instagram show for their "first day of pre-season" post? Second year player Lachie Bramble, and fourth year players Finn Maginness and Cody Weightman. Aside from that? Rankine (5th year), Davies-Uniacke (6th year), Taranto (7th year), Hopper (8th year), Weller (9th year), Kelly (10th year), Hill (12th year), Heppell (12th year) and Mumford (retired).

I'd like to think this is just the AFL account promoting their big-names, but a quick visit back to the Swans' "first day back" posts from last year included shots of five 1st to 4th year players, and ten senior players, including five of Buddy alone, who is featured on our social media on a weekly basis during the season. This 2 week window out of 52 weeks that used to be about the developing players has become all about which superstars are returning to training early.

I realise it's a minor gripe, but is it so much to ask for the media teams around the AFL to just put aside the big names for just the two weeks that aren't supposed to be about them?

At least they showed off first year player Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti in a separate post

Actually, I totally agree that we don't see enough of our "Lesser Lights" now or during the season. When someone debuts you like to feel a level of familiarity rather than "who the feck is this bloke?".
The AFLW mob did a bloody good job of putting lots of names and pics out there.
When Roberts debuted I didn't know that he's actually quite stocky.

Yep exactly. Did we know that Sheldrick was close to debuting? No, because we hadn't heard anything from him or about him since day one of pre-season when he did his 'new kid on the block' interview.

I get it, it's tough to cover 40 or so players equally, and especially during the season when Mills is racking up individual achievements and Buddy and Heeney are putting on clinics and Warner is improving every week and Parker is being a leader and Papley is being a character. Some will get left behind. But that just makes these two weeks at the start of pre-season, when they're not overshadowed by the rest of the squad, all the more important as a chance to see how some of those lesser-known names are going.

Next week I want to see how Gould's looking as he enters his fourth season. I want to hear how Sheather is shaping up after an injury-ruined season. I want to see how Campbell performs in the time trials, given his tank is an area that's been under the microscope. I want to see if Sheldrick has trimmed down some of that puppy fat. I don't want to see or hear anything about how the senior players are committed and love coming into the club etc. when no one accused them of otherwise.

Exactly we literally have no idea we all thought Gould was close to a debut 2 years ago at least tho a pre-determined position is already there for him (defence/mid)

More concerned about Campbell who looked lost on the field without a settled position in the team.

…. but how will I know if Buddy is mixing his general waste and recyclables?

You know what subject I'm sick of hearing about? Max King's "yips".

He kicked 52 goals 41 behinds this year. That's an outstanding return for a fourth year key forward. It's 1% less accurate than Buddy's historic 2008 season.

The "expert" pundits will always cite the games where King's inaccuracy "cost" the Saints wins. They'll never mention that Membrey only finishing with 34 goals despite being 28 and in the prime of his career, or that the Saints only had three forwards overall finish with 20+ goals for the year, probably cost them more games than some wayward kicking from King.

Anyone know when the lads return for preseason out of curiosity?

I'd trade almost half our list for Max King

King/McDonald/Amartey as our talls going forward would be spectacular

First to fourth years tomorrow, though the club will make sure to let us know each and every fifth year and above who shows up early. If we're lucky we might get to see a first to fourth year too!

To a degree I agree but it’s the wild swings he has to iron out. It’s going from 4.0 to like 1.6 the next week. It’s that which coaches want to iron out a bit, make the bad games end up being 3.3 or something

The League told clubs ahead of the NAB AFL Draft on Monday that its recommendation to the AFL Commission ahead of their December meeting would be to allow four players on the interchange bench as well as one substitution for tactical reasons that can be used for any purpose at any stage of the game.

Insert picture of AFL executives throwing their hands in the air as they realise clubs yet again found a way around the rules.
Basically the league was too frightened to confront the doctors who were clearly ticking off on med subs that were to say the least dubious.

Never ceases to amaze me that a supposedly professional sporting body fails to consider potential flaws in rule changes and how clubs/players could manipulate them, prior to their introduction.

HB, normally I consider you a person of excellent taste, infinite wisdom, and a great deal of clarity of thought! (You are a Swans supporter after all... :grinv1:)

However, the Australian Federal Govt, all of the State and Territory Govts, and numerous other Govts around the world have continuously introduced legislation without exploring the 'unintended consequences' for centuries... (including one time in England or Scotland where they put a tax on watches and clocks, so everyone stopped buying clocks/watches and went to the pub to find out the time... :roflv1::roflv1::roflv1: true story of 17/18th century!)

I have no idea why you or anyone else would think that sporting body would do better!
