No, this is just something the media keeps going with as some kind of strategy, I've seen them say the same thing about bringing in Linc in regards to the Neale trade. Our recruiters said long ago he was targeted for what he offered as a footballer and them being mates was just a bonus. There was a lot of posters on our board, including me, following intently on draft day hoping to see him fall to our second. I got so excited my post got deleted when we did get him.

Bris Lions definitely had a hard on for Vic Country boys at that time.

For sure, they apparently adapted to the Brisbane lifestyle more easily so it was seen as a favourable for a time. Ironically not a great deal of them still on the list.

The Suns recruiters swore up and down that if they only had pick 2 in 2019 they would have still taken Noah Anderson. Not sure it's true but anyway.....

If they only had pick 2 doesn't that mean Rowell is off the board?

Yes, the point being the Suns were given pick 1 or 2 (can't remember which one was technically the gift) specifically so they could get Anderson too. The theory being as they are best mates they are more likely to stay at the suns. Because it was supposedly working for Brisbane getting mates of their guns.

Questions were raised about whether Anderson is actually worth pick 2 (he is imo, kids a superstar) hence them saying they would have still picked him if they didn't get Rowell.

Didn't realise this was controversial. Seems a solid strategy to me, as long as the buddy is a good player.

It's not controversial but it just seems to me in both cases it's overblown.

If the Suns only had 2 and Rowell was off the board no one think twice if you took Anderson. He was easily the second best player available. Pretty much the same with Berry, look at who else was on the board when he was drafted. Before injury in 2016 he was projecting as a top 5 pick. Anyone who saw the 2015 champs will attest to Berry looking like a top tier pick and then he busted his shoulder.

Building a strong culture is what matters because at that point it doesn't matter who or where you draft your players from; they'll stay. Draftees being friends is basically a bonus but when you've had retention problems it's easy to focus on from the outside.

Ah yes the 2016 draft, where the suns turned 4 top 10 picks into 2 spuds and 2 B graders. A very weak draft in this non experts opinion.

With the benefit of hindsight I'd say you'd prefer one of English/Ridley/Stewart/Darcy who were drafted after Berry, but there isn't much else so picking McLuggage's mate is as good as any of the rest :p
