I reckon the only locks we have in the side, pending fitness of course, are:

Hardwick - ????? - ?????
Scrimshaw - Sicily - CJ

Meek - Newcombe - Ward
Amon - ????? - Day

Moore - ????? - MacDonald
Breust - Lewis - Wingard

Reeves/Lynch - ????? - ????? - ?????
I’d probably have Meek instead of Lynch, but that isn’t based off a lot.

I’m close to this view, but even Meek…15 games over 5 seasons. We all hope he is ready to blossom, but it all remains to be seen doesn’t it?

Take all 3 rucks out and its about right. Obviously 1 or 2 of those rucks have to play, but it’s no certainty which of the 3 (or maybe 4 if Ramsden comes along quickly) actually plays regularly in 2023.

So just because he is bigger means he demands a spot in the back 6? Off a total of 9 AFL games (when Frost was out injured)?
Weddle will need a few seasons to develop his body. He may be a big lad now but full back is a very tough position - not one for draftees. I think he could well develop like Chris Langford who started out on the wing. In other words, Weddle may be the long-term answer but Blancck is the man for now. Frost struggles a bit with big marking forwards.

Pretty well covered territory that Weddle was not drafted to play as a defender, nor has he been training there.

Who did the Gunston free agent sign was it Ned Ryerson ?

Could we get a similar sign for Weddle. May be along the lines of....

SAM MITCHELL says Weddle is playing wing/mid

They did try to make him a forward for a number of years in a row - and it didn’t work at all.

If I recall correctly Nash into middle wasn’t really a planned move. He was largely playing on a wing at BH and they chucked him into middle one game just to see what would happen for a half and he surprisingly showed enough to keep trying.

There’s no way he could be have been playing mid 4 years ago - would have completely floundered.

He’s always had the physical tools but it’s taken years for his game sense to improve.
It is the last sentence that makes the most sense and where Nashy has improved most. Game sense is critical.

Have you seen Blanck lately. He's put some size on, he's a lock.
Agree. We are better placed, but imagine if we got someone like McKay as well.
DGB and Frost could definitely be tried forward. Himmelberg, another FA could add even more versatility to the List. Just need xfactor forwards and then we would be made in List terms.

Fifty games into the kids, some FA pick ups, continued prudent use of the Draft or a couple of smart trades for genuine need, then watch out. We won’t be out of the AFL’s Fixture then.

Why would he be training as a defender when it is clear that his role is likely to be somewhere in the midfield? Doesn't mean he won't transition to full-back later in his career (as did Langford).
Maybe.

But there's no more reason to suspect that we want Weddle as a full back than there is that we want Finn Maginness or Ned Long as a fullback.

Well apart from the fact neither Finn or Long were AA Full Backs in their draft year and Weddle was ;)

People shouldn't be shouting down recognition that Weddle may end up a KPD. We may have drafted him with something else in mind but there is no guarantee he makes the cut as a wing/mid. In that case, he will end up in the backline and project as an elite stopper with lots of rebound.

By that logic any player could end up anywhere. It's still not a reason to randomly bring them up in a discussion about our key defenders for next year.

I am surprised that DGB has not been played forward. I know about the commentary that the coaching staff want a player to learn a position well before moving them but DGB has an amazing leap and he had a reputation as a kamikaze mark as a junior (which was evident in his first few games). Since those early games he's toned down (no doubt to provide better accountability for his opponent). With more KPD options arising over the last year, why not try him up forward a la Aaron Naughton? His leap is somewhat akin and I could see him providing opportunities for crumbing forwards.

There’s just no way he could have played mid in his first few seasons at senior level. The tricky thing is, a lot of young mids who are talented enough come into a good senior side end up spending their first few years off the half back flank or forward pocket. We did try that with Nash and whilst he showed glimpses, it’s clear he wasn’t suited to this roles.

Nothing random about it. The question raised was whether Blanck was a lock. My point was that the only other full-back prospect we have on the list is Weddle and he won't be ready for several years so Blanck probably is a lock.

I could not agree more re DGB.

We will be in trouble if he got injured then.

He'll play with Frost. Showed alot in those 9 AFL games, and Hawks rate him alot in internally, as to why they drafted him in mid-season
Couple of things I like …… “Among his strengths, Blanck is lightning quick off the first few steps, is one of the cleanest spoilers in the draft crop”.

He scored over 20 in yo-yo testing which is great for a big so he’s got a very good tank. Also noticed a few times that he’s a FB as he sometimes looks pissed off when the opposition kicked a goal on him.

Team defence will get the job done against some forward lines. We will often get by with just Sicily, Frost, DGB and Scrimshaw taking on the tall forwards. However, I think we are better balanced with Blanck who can hold his ground against the bigger bodies. I also like Blanck's temperament - he always looks composed. No need to panic if Blanck is injured but I think he will play if available assuming assuming he continues to develop and build on what he showed this year.

I don’t disagree about Blanck. What I like about him, he hates to be beaten.

That said, imagine if we had another Blanck or someone competent to play at FB.

Could help provide greater flexibility for taller forwards from the current List.
