He is 18. He got signed by Newcastle, but he isn't breaking into their team just yet.

So they farm him out to Hearts to develop until he either does warrant a place in their team, or has value on the trade market.

It's not like he is only in Scotland because no other league wants him, or because he doesn't have talent.

I know how the system works I follow the epl. It's good that he has signed with Newcastle however it's just as likely in a few years time he is sold to a Scottish team or something having not played a game in the EPL. It's nothing in comparison to what aussies were doing in England a few years back, our young players weren't getting loaned out to lower leagues they were playing first team minutes in the EPL. Kewell even won young player of the year in the entire competition from memory.

How is this impressive? The Scottish league isn't in the big 5. If this were back in the 2000-2010 era it wouldn't even have rated a mention, we had aussies playing in all the top leagues by the bucket load. If anything it shows the regression of Australian soccer (I think mostly due to the A league).
In terms of development its little different to Eric Bennings steps to an AFL career:

A-League clubs are essentially just farms for bigger and better clubs in foreign leagues, so in terms of soccer, we’re destined to always have an inferior product in this country.

International sport is like that. You can stay at home or you can aim for the top.

Staggering: I know how the system works I follow the epl.
You compare the AFL with the A-League.

Not sure what you are on about as usual, but I'll have a guess.

Your mates claim soccer is the biggest sport in Australia, but you are happy with an 18 year old playing in the Scottish league as a major achievement? It doesn't match up to the fact we are one of the strongest sporting nations on the planet, regular top 5 finishes in the Olympics against the rest of the world. Even further to that, it's actually not great in comparison to our recent history 15 years ago.

Your spurious efforts to pump up AFL footy at the expense of soccer & the A-League.

Just as Eric Benning leaving the East Kimberley Football Club lowers the depth of talent there, so does the kid leaving the A-league for Scotland.

Let's hope he does a tiny bit better than Kaz Patafta and Daniel Arzani.

Or what ever happened to Massimo Luongo? He was another Aussie that was going to be a star then disappeared.

I don't get your point though, it isn't many players that leave and the ones that do don't seem to achieve anything of note in the European leagues anyway. It dilutes the talent a little bit, but not much.

Been playing in the 2nd tier in England for most of his career. Getting to the age where he will probably come back to Aus soon.

Mark Viduka spent 3.5 years in the Croatian league and then 1.5 years in the Scottish league before moving to the premier league at age 24 and he became one of our biggest stars in England.

Yeh but he wasn't being celebrated in the Croatian league like kuol is for getting a loan into the Scottish league. Once he performs in Scotland to a high standard he'll get some good press, then if he moves to regular game time in the EPL I'm happy to get excited, but so many aussies of late struggle with the step up, so I won't be holding my breath.

Basically Aussie players previously got press and anticipation when they were scoring regularly in European leagues, it seems like we get excited by Aussie players even just getting a contract in Europe now.

International sports become easier to follow year by year & media coverage reflects that.

Eric Bennings progress in the AFL is reported more widely in the East Kimberley, surprise surprise.

The beauty for Aussie soccer players playing in Europe is that they see Europe and different cultures and if the club you are playing for is in a European wide competition it doesn't cost you a cent

Lol you're really going to continue to compare a bloke from remote Australia playing I assume local footy (I didn't read the article), to an Australian soccer player playing in a professional league from a country that made it to the round of 16 in the world cup?

And that is exactly why Aussies will never fall in love with the A League.

I selected Eric Benning as he is the AFL version of a soccer player pursuing their dream to play at the highest level. It reflects your comments* putting down soccer to pump up the AFL.

* pathetic.

Don't be a snob.

3rd or 4th level sport of any kind doesnt enjoy wide support.
Especially with Australians.
We are a huge land with a small population.

Soccer works in Europe because of the big populations crammed into one small area.

That will never happen here.

Maybe in the future when I am not around but not now.

Aussie Rules is just as old also, our indigenous sport.

Nothing alike. What is pathetic is soccer fans in Australia claiming to be the biggest sport in the country, do you think it is? Is that why you're upset with me pointing out some major flaws in that claim?

The beauty for cricket players, baseball players, basketball players and Australian Rules footballers playing in Australia is that they get to see Australia and different cultures as the club you are playing for is in a Australia wide competition it doesn't cost you a cent.

Don't you think it goes both ways!
