That last quarter is immense …. Last half ball just bounced Hawks way. Teams evenish but Hawks had the luck of the footy gods. Stuff like that happens …. always notice it the last few years in games we are meant to win and we just lose from the get go, ball just bounces wrong all day, like it’s divine intervention or something.

That happened Sunday, we should have lost, all those 50/50 things were falling the Hawks way massively, yet we found a way to hang on.

IMPRESSIVE.

Great to get a win, but gee we were bad after half time. Hawks exposed us, they went one on one and stopped our handball game and run at stoppages. We need to work on overcoming that.

It was a game where three and a half talls didn't work. De Koning had very little impact while we could have done with more run and speed.

What they did well. They were daring and just went quick into our defensive zones instead of holding up play, went up the middle, kicked short well and switched play well. Exposed our zone, we probably didn't stop the shorter kicks well or the switch.

We missed Saad and McGovern badly. They are probably our fastest players and massive weapons out of defence. Young covered for McDonald fine.

The other issue for us was going inside 50. Very inefficient. Missed our targets, turned it over going inside a bit too much, this will need to get better but so will how our forwards present.

Our tall forwards aren't wrestlers, need to realise that even when the game goes defensive and packs form, they need to be moving through the pack and getting a jump at it. Too much standing and wrestling.

So much to take from this game and learn because we were exposed and we made mistakes we can improve on. It's what we needed.

Docherty - he was great, carried the backline, worked his arse off.

Walsh - he was good without dominating. Got plenty of it but didn't stand out. Was out run and let the ball out on an occasion, maybe he's not back yet.

Cripps - he's just a bull, back to his best.

Kennedy - gee his moving well, he just works super hard.

Hewett - gee he's reliable, he's clean and he's so hard at it.

Williams - big job with Saad out, he was good but needs to work on the overhead stuff.

Cerra - He had a poor game, used it poorly, looked really out of touch.

Newman - he's a battle, he was really good with his kicking, backed himself to hit the difficult ones and did.

O'Brien - he's getting better but his defensive stuff and skills were sloppy.

Setterfield - he played well, he's getting there.

Fisher - he was good early, only ok late, missed some crucial targets.

Weitering - I was cursing him after he avoided contact in a marking contest, let his opponent goal side who then kicked a crucial goal. You could see he knew what he did, he then went back to take a match winning mark. Played a good game.

Silvagni - love the footy he's playing, had a good overhead game. His kicking has improved.

Owies - Solid, his kicking inside 50 is good. His game was ok but not one of his best.

Pittonet - he was really good, he's a natural footballer.

McKay - good early, but gee he needs to work on getting free and moving through the packs. His hands were really off then he took one running and jumping at a pack late. Something to learn there.

Durdin - I thought he was great, really developing nicely. Do we all remember late when he was really challenged by a player going hard at the ball and he just went as hard as he could and hit bodies. It's what we haven't got from our small forwards before and why I really rate him. He's a gun this kid.

Boyd - looked out of his depth, not sure he reads the game well, good VFL player but just did ok, nothing special. Maybe if given time he'd go up levels.

Young - he was good, freed up Weitering, beat his man but he lacks confidence. Punching from in front when you're a decent mark and 2m tall needs to go but I like him.

Curnow - Great early, imo he's not at full tilt running wise. McKay is miles ahead with his chasing. He's at his best running and jumping and he wasn't in the end.

Plowman - he was ok, reads the game well, just not that offensive weapon or a genuine third tall.

DeKoning - mostly unsighted, didn't do much, very quiet game.

Mental turning point was Fish not going for goal in the 4th. He shoots and nails it, we take the wind out of their sails and settle our mob a bit. As would have it, went the other way and they score a goal (12 point turn around)
It was late in the 3rd Quarter and I 100% agree that it would have steadied the ship for us if he kicked it.

If Harry was leading at him and he could hit him on the chest then fine, but he kicked to a 50/50 contest rather than take the shot himself.

Gave the Hawks a massive momentum swing.

Not sure if it's already been posted, but I personally think that both of these comments are spot on...

The drop in efficiency in forward entries was very noticeable. Hawks started winning everything on the ground and rebounding. I dunno if that’s being too tall, dropping pressure, structures breaking down or what but it was what cost us.

It was almost as if everyone setting up defensively outside our F50 we’re expecting one thing to happen, then we’re completely out of position or unprepared when the ball pinged back out. Hawks moved it waaay too easily through the back of the square at times.

I personally take a different view, we were not good but we were not horribly bad either … this game allowed us to shore up our weaknesses whilst getting away with the four points. Bounce of the ball really favoured the Hawks th3 last three quarters … was a game of incheses and for whatever reason after quarter time, time and time again we fell one inch short.

Glad w3 had that game, will learn heaps.

We held them probably par score wise in the second and third. Yeah last quarter was tickets spent , bounce of the ball and maybe not slowing the game down. We came back though from defecit and held on .

Watched the replay. Just had too. We just need composure next time to ice these games.
Plenty of chances went begging in the last quarter while there wild snaps didn't look like missing.
We are building very well and Kennedy is a bloody 'good ordinary player' :D but I don't want to say I told you so :p
Lewis Young is going to make us say - Jones who'. We really do have some real talent.
Setters is building, OB belongs, Fisher is a smart footballer, Plowman just does his job and Pitto is a work horse.
Just to name a few lesser lights.

Just on our running and ability to pressure throughout games.

I see some similarities with us and Melbourne so was curious to compare our TOG%.

Ed Langdon consistently plays 100% TOG...which is just ridiculous for a hard running winger. That guy must be just about the fittest guy in the AFL. Interestingly, Petracca and Oliver play approx 90% game time...those are big numbers for mids.

In the Hawks game, Setters played 88%, LOB only 80%. Cripps & Walsh 85% each. Having said that, the Hawks midfielders TOG% were similar to ours.

one thing i noticed was how hard Durdin (or it could have been Owies - my eyes are fading) hit the opposition player with the ball when he went in for the tackle.
So... All us little guys look the same to you, huh?

:p

Blues winning is causing me financial hardship … drank around $2,000 of wine I’ve been saving for special occasions the last three weeks ….. loving it! go baggers you bloody beauties!
Looks like you'll be on the goon bag for grand final day then.

I think it was a combination of all those things, but the protagonist for it all was that we let the Hawks dictate the tempo of the game. When they upped their own tempo and pressure, we tried to go with them instead of slowing it down.
We have too many guys who can't run all game. When those guys run out of legs, the running between the arcs lessens and the defensive structure falls over. The Hawks win more contests and get more F50 entries as a result.
Needed to slow it down and maintain possession for chunks of the 2nd and 3rd. Do that and we probably would've kicked away in the 4th.

The problem with that, is that they weren't at the fall of the ball after the 1st quarter. We virtually never had anyone crumbling in our forward line.

Edit: *crumbing - autocorrect strikes again.
I think the problem was that the talls stopped bringing it to ground. CC ,H,TDK had 2 possessions combined in the last quarter. Fist quarter they were hitting up the ground taking marks and clearing out the forward line.

I didn't see any one on one myself. I saw a back half flood and keepings off uncontested footy to an empty forward line for them....it nearly worked but that is out of date tactics really and its not likely to happen often. Our players wasted energy chasing them around and we lost all shape but still had enough 'reslience' to grasp the win.

We won ugly in the end, that's part and parcel of our circumstances (personnel and game changes). Beats losing pretty though.

It wasn't the only costly brain fart Fisher made during the game - but there is no one pushing him out at this stage.

I didn’t see much of that, more so they flooded numbers back to free up CJ and others who were struggling with their defensive 1 on 1 assignments in the first quarter.
Also we still got plenty of inside 50s after half time it was just that Harry and Charlie didn’t take the marks or get the frees they did after quarter time so our forward entries began to look a bit ugly.
The big thing after half time for me was we lost our shape around and behind the ball which allowed them to transition out of their D50 and get it into their open forward line.

Giving up a 6 goal run and still fighting out a win is a good sign, but shows we still have areas to address.

We are clearly susceptible to good ball movement, which can happen with a general lack of footspeed between the arc and how we setup without the ball, where we struggle to create turnovers.

Number of ways to counter this, play a tighter/higher press, inject some speed in general play, force the opposition to narrow attacking lanes.

While we tweak, we need to further improve our composure/tempo when we do have the ball and not be enamoured by kicking it long to tall forwards as a means to combat the pressure of the opposition
It’s interesting that a lot of their scoring was off rebound. Not too much damage from 6-6-6 (they scored a couple I think but looked particularly dangerous on rebound).

Did Voss drop an extra back when we got forward of centre to counter a rebounding paddock (I can’t remember?) just to settle the team and slow the momentum?

Really, really, really missed Saad. I think a guy like him in a game like that would have made that Hawks game a 4-goal win.

They went real hard at stopping our handball game by manning up our outlets. Definitely pushed numbers back as well. Just need to work on what we do when teams go defensive against us.

Another thing I didn't mention was our lack of tempo footy. We looked to go forward and fast all day, probably why we looked badly out of gas and allowed a massive comeback. That tempo can't be sustained. We slowed it up against Richmond really well but have fallen back into going full on attack all game.

They will be talking about how they failed to slow the game up, create rest periods and stop their momentum.

Just watching replay.

Was curious as to what happened after Q1. The most glaring thing you notice is how easily they bounce it out of their d50 and how panic ridden we were when we were trying to get it out of our backline. Maybe they applied a lot more pressure but our hand passes and kicks weren’t effective and even if we managed to kick it out they kept rebounding back into our d50.
