You can only do what your opposition allows you to, but I loved how we switched gears a few times last night and worked the ball, with patience, back and forth across half back until something we liked opened up in the middle of the ground - a pinpoint pass to open them up and we were off and running again. Real growth in our game I think.
Agree! I saw real growth in our key area of weakness too. It’s very exciting.

Thanks Wickz.

Finished 5th for the year & eliminated * 1st week of the finals.
.what could've been had we not run into the drug cheats when we were flying the next year.

Much better team this time around though.

Being from Adelaide do you think the Crows supporters are having a whinge about the perceived umpire “bias” towards Carlton.
Don’t think they were too bent out of shape when they won the free kick count 33-13 against Richmond!

I might be in the minority around here. And don’t get me wrong… I loved Charlie’s game yesterday. But I’d still be giving Cripps the three Brownlow votes for best on ground.

Coaches may give Charlie the majority votes but the Umpires most likely will give Cripps the 3 Brownlow votes.

Thanks for reminding me of that infuriating trait. So many times I'd yell out "JUST KICK THE ****** THING!" as they were flicking off the 7th handball inside 50 hoping for someone to miraculously become available in the ideal position and under no pressure.
Hahaha totally. Was infuriating

It’s easy to overlook that we’ve only played a handful of games with this coach and this team. It’s still a work in progress, particularly in terms of the all the important little stuff that moves a team from middling to pointy end. Look at Saints - way less talent on the list than us but are seeing the benefits of a number of years of the same core group. (Benefits is a very relatively term).

Injuries willing, I really expect to see our best football of the year in the late stages.
Agree and you can see on Vossy's pressa how pleased he is with the progression, virtually beaming.

I loved that passage of play where he got the I50 clearance to JSOS for that goal. Gets the ball, stands up and a Crowbot just ricochets off him like he's made of concrete and then fends off another Crowbot before handing it off to Jack. Pure beast.
The side on replay doesn't really do it justice. I was sitting on the wing so it was from behind Cripps, so you could actually see the Crom player bounce off him.

Maybe if Butts tried going for the ball he wouldn't give as many frees away.

Great to see CC finally starting to take his mark on the firsts grab.

Best thing about the wing is the weaknesses appear to be disappearing. Our brand of footy hasn't been good even though we have been winning, been getting away because offensively we are outrageously good.

Last two weeks, perhaps it's because the opposition have been weak or perhaps it's because we are improving or both, our defensive game has been on song. We were very good this game keeping the opposition out of the corridor. We kept them wide, very wide and we slowed them up. Hence our team was not having to do a lot of hard running to defend and hence we did not run out of gas. We are also switching the play more and hence, running the opposition around, making them work hard to defend and keeping possession of the ball.

Footy at the moment is about how teams can move the ball, getting the ball into the middle, switching play high up the ground and on the flip side, how teams defend against this. This is the area of the game we have struggled with and have improved with recently to add to our already good clearance game.

To add to our good defensive structures we intercepted well, it brought Weitering well into the game, it's a shame McGovern or Marchbank were also not present because they would have worked well together and had an absolute field day.

Cripps - 35 and 2 goals, he has to be the best player in the game at the moment.
Docherty - Another big haul, had to step up as we had no third tall and he's in great form.
Cerra - I though he was good this week but would like to see his kicking improve. It's not as good as we were lead to believe.
Walsh - Just keeps playing really good footy.
Fisher - He was the mid to get more midfield minutes with Hewett out of the fab 5. He did ok, kicked a few nice goals.
Kennedy - I thought he was good, he gets it a fair bit on the outside for a big slower midfielder. Nice game from him.
Curnow - He was dominant. Reminded me a lot of Wayne Carey at his best dominating CHF and no one able to stop him but the 6 goals was massive.
Newman - his game was up and down, he turns up some weeks and his kicking is either really on or really off and today it was off.
Carroll - Quieter game but gee does he use the ball well.
O'Brien - You want him kicking inside 50. What I want to see is him doing better when they have the ball.
Williams - Played his role, didn't do anything too fancy which is all we want to see from him.
Newnes - Not a massive game possession wise but did some good things, nice goal, some good tackles and defensive efforts.
Saad - Gee he is creative with his clever kicking and speed, a real danger player for us.
Weitering - It looked like Walker had him early, but he finished off strongly, the way we played, the way we defended helped him a lot.
Young - His last two weeks have been really good. His marking has been really good. After seeing his highlights of good contested marking, it was disappointing not to see it but now we are. IMO he is a massive confidence player, but also when our team defends well, our defenders are allowed to play well.
Boyd - Started really well and went a little quiet but that's fine, he plays the game well, hard at it, quick, intense and finishes with some nice kicking.
Silvagni - Smart player, adds to our twin tower mix really well. Like him up the ground but when he plays second ruck you don't see it as much.
Cottrell - I like Cottrell but felt his game lacked the intensity you normally see from him.
DeKoning - He was competitive in the ruck and played a solid defensive role behind the footy which was how i was hoping we would use him. Don't let the stats fool you, he wasn't smashed in the ruck, he was very competitive. Would like to see him holding his marks better and owning those high balls coming from opposition pressure kicks more.
Durdin - What he does is really good, he knows his way around the midfield and likes to get up the ground and play as a mid. His forward game was quiet. But this is something to work on. With the two talls marking a lot of it and taking a lot of the incoming ball it can be hard for the medium and small forwards. We just have to hope that when they don't fire, the smalls do as they did round 1.
McKay - Second fiddle to Curnow at FF. Kicked 3 and gave really strong contests all day. Worked well with Curnow.
Owies - Still struggles with goal kicking accuracy outside of 35m. His pressure game was ok but he wasn't overly sharp at ground level. I think our small forwards are doing well now on the rebound keeping the opposition wide and under pressure so I think Voss will be happy with them.
Martin - Looked like a man in form ready for a big day but got injured. Could open the door for someone like Motlop who will embrace a chance no doubt.

Happy with the win, but I wish we managed to extend the lead in the 4th.

Anyway, that 3rd was a brilliant quarter of hard running.

Looking forward to smacking more teams.

Not sure if it's already been stated.
But Pittonet's injury could be blessing in disguise.
TDK forced to step up and be the main man with Ruck duties, rather than the back up..
This patch could see some rapid development and set us up for later in the year.
Hewitt coming back in, is another bonus.
I really want to see us win a game away from Melb.
Big challenge coming up against GWS.

Watching highlights again, have to give special praise to Docherty.

He is an inspiration and still a very important leader of our club

He really stood up and be counted, like he has for most games this season, which is truly remarkable and just so up lifting for club morale.

I beg to differ.

Comfortably beating these sides is a massive indicator of a change in mindset at the club. Years gone by we'd be chests out and high fiving after scratching out a 2pt win over a top 8 side, and then go on to lose to a bottom 6 side the following week. Beating up lower end teams is the ticket to making finals. Build the percentage, make sure you're getting the wins you absolutely should get so you don't have to pull a rabbit out of the hat against Melbourne late in the year.

Finals footy - on the day, our best beats anyone. Half the battle is just getting there to give ourselves that opportunity.

Agree with all of that. Given our history I’m 100% with you and there is massive improvement from past seasons. I was talking in context of this season only and our recent form of looking like a top 4 side. And the context of Young and Boyd in the last two weeks. That was my ref point for the post but didn’t explain that well enough.

im absolutely stoked with our current season. And I agree. Huge improvements on Christmasses past.

Chf with 20 disposals, 10 marks & 6 goals outranks everyone else.👍

Yep. Charlie BOG for mine. Crippa a very close 2nd. Maybe we take Crippa's dominance a tad for granted, i don't think so....but. He was great.

But Charlie took the pI55 out of the Cows (as i've been laughing at you calling them lol). He gets the nod just for that as well as the numbers he put up.

Cerra and Kanga were also terrific helping Crippa with the bull work.
