The thing that I don't understand about Dow is that he can't handball with his left hand. I get that many players don't kick well on their non dominant side, there are plenty of examples there, but to not be able to handball on your left just seems bizarre to me. It means he is restricted to twisting his upper body and shovelling a little give to his right, making him highly vulnerable to having his right arm caught up in a tackle.Love that our reggies are winning too. Says a fair bit about where we are as a club. Worried for Dow. Feel like he might be sized up for a Suns jumper in 23.
Not if your evasive skills are good, there's no impetus to learn. The thing that I don't understand about Dow is that he can't handball with his left hand. Surely this is one of the easiest things to develop as a professional footballer. This is where "playing to your strengths" can be the biggest cop out excuse not to improve your weaknesses.
Dow is not on his own on this. I would say this applies to most players in the league. As soon as they allowed teams to throw the ball with the "backhand " handball any requirement to handball with the non dominant hand evaporated. The thing that I don't understand about Dow is that he can't handball with his left hand. If I'm being honest, I think being ambidextrous in disposing by hand is a little overrated. More interested that they're able to drop their ball onto their boot competently with either hand should they have an arm pinned back.I think there’s a lot of people “getting away with” their weaknesses as opposed to having the skills to do the best thing for the situation. Not expecting every player to be Scotland or Houlihan like, but when they received the ball on the wing running toward the left half forward flank with pressure pushing them toward the boundary line, they just kept taking ground, steadied and hit up a forward who had space to lead into by kicking on their left foot.
Dow in the same situation can use his agility to stop on a dime, spin around and look to kick backwards or in board to retain possession. Meanwhile the opposition has now had time to flood back and the forwards have no space to lead into. He walks away thinking, “I had an effective disposal. Good work.” But he’s really just cost us a shot at goal because he’s conceded defeat on his left side and committed to never working on it for his entire career.
It frustrates me so much that he doesn’t kick on his left. Absolutely baffles me that he can’t handball on his left.

'Motlop Comes Alive'
A 4 goal 2nd half from Jesse Motlop has contributed to the undermanned Carlton reserves defeating Box Hill 105-59. It was just a shame that the stream crashed just as we were starting to bury the Hawks.
You know the club is in a good place when your reserves go to Box Hill City Oval & pull out a 9 goal last quarter, after the Hawks had taken the lead in the 3rd quarter.
We had just started to take back control of the game when the stream died. I jumped to the VFL app to keep an eye on the scores & it was just raining Carlton goals. Disappointed we missed it.Saw a couple of goals & then technical issues. Gave up. Link likes to try & put you into AFL games, a trying effort. Time for a Smithy’s.
Good stuff!
any chance we can add the reserves thread to the main page Aphrodite?
