Blues are back. BLUES ARE BAAAAAACK! ;)

Boyd is definitely 1st in line, way better ball use than Dow who was ok but barely VFL standard by foot.

Easily our best AFL listed players. If only we could clone them.
Dow's inside mid skills stood out like a neon light at this level.

As I said, he has built on his game, but he hasn't been clean at all

I get that people want to be positive with Dow, but tell me, who does he replace?
If we are doing like-for-like he can replace cerra or Walsh primarily. His burst and possession by hand is his greatest asset but his kicking and defensive running are still way below either of those guys.

Decent effort fellas. Solid all over the ground.
Dow racked them up, but was not as clean as one would expect. Plenty of fumbling takes and some careless disposals. Will need to lift for mine to force a game at the top level with our stacked midfield.
Hayes under rated at the Dogs. Given a development coaching role, so well regarded, probably by Hansen and Austin. Probably not a need on the senior list, but deserving.
Kemp is lost as a forward target. Midfield cameo was good and looked Ok in defence last year.
Cottrell, I hope can hold a spot on the list for a couple more years. Doesn’t play many games in top grade, but provides plenty at this level and a great example on the training track.
Parks solid and similar to Cotts a great option at the level. Neither will let the team down if asked to play up.
Boyd is great at the level and still developing as a senior option. Will be an interesting ride.
Newnes better than the grade, just does his job.
Mirkov finished sore, but plenty of taps and tried to involve himself around the ground. Plenty to work with.
Williamson still prone to brain farts. A grade quality if can fix the composure.
Motlop a bit too cool for school early for mine, but worked in to it well and is definitely a class act. Couple of times thought I was looking at a very young Syd Jackson, but doesn’t have the same goal sense. Better high half forward or even wing.
Akuei not big TOG has the raw materials, but a long way to go.

Admit I want him to do well, but impressed by young Crippa. Lowish TOG early but presented well and had some very slick offloads by hand through the game. Slow burn, but interested in seeing the development.

Nobody at this stage. Dynamic in the contest and is a very solid depth option. Too one dimensional at present and he's behind too many in the pecking order to play as a full-time mid. He did present better around the ground than he has in the past. If he can build that aspect of his game, he might get in as another midfield rotation.

That was one of the ugliest 7 goals wins you will see. It took quite a bit of perseverance to see the game out.

I think the individual player reviews this week will contain quite a few notes.

Credit to Dow who stepped up to lead the midfield after looking totally disinterested in the 1st quarter. It's hard to see him playing many games at AFL level this year. His game doesn't seem to have progressed.

Newnes & Cottrell both did what you would expect them to do at this level. Like Dow, they won't see a lot of AFL time this year.

Young was good down back, but wasn't really challenged. If he has to step up to replace McDonald, it will be a totally different ball game for him.

I was impressed with some of Mirkov's ruck work & his work below his knees. As far as footy smarts go, he is a long way off.

Akuei jumped at the ball a lot, but I felt he really had no idea when it was the right time to jump into a marking contest. He played in defence for much of the NAB League season last year & played in defence tonight, but I would still like to see him played forward where, if he isn't taking marks, he can at least create opportunities for our small & medium forwards.

Kemp looked at all sea in the forward line. Mind you, the delivery into our F50 was quite appalling at times. Harry & Charlie would struggle with delivery like we saw tonight. Kemp had a couple of looks in the midfield in the last quarter & looked more at home there.

Boyd mostly used the ball well (probably better than most), but I suspect he is a 'break glass in emergency' prospect for our AFL team.

Parks was steady down back. He & Young worked well together. I can see this being a development season for Parks at VFL level.

Williamson worries me at times. He does some good things & then he does some seemingly stupid stuff. He should have closed the gap between his best & worst by now.

Motlop had an almost game. Cleaner hands & the occasional true bounce might have seen him kick a couple of goals. One thing I found disappointing was his failure to get front & centre at marking contests in our F50. When he did get the ball, he used it well. His defensive pressure was probably a little bit off where it needs to be.

Looking at some of the VFL listed players, I really liked Hayes' game. He probably shaded Dow as our best player. He is going to be important for our VFL midfield.

Hirst had a very good 1st half, but faded quite a bit in the 2nd half. His run, carry & ball use in the 1st half was as good any.

Trudgeon looks to have made some good progress from last year when he really struggled in the few looks he had at VFL level.

Maher looked good at times, but didn't get enough of the ball to have a major influence on the game.

Hamilton did some good stuff. He looks to have good hands under pressure & uses the ball fairly well. He just needs to get to some better positions to become an option for his teammates.

Next week against Box Hill at Box Hill will give us a fairly good indication of where the team is at.

JGM should only be used sparingly in the ruck. His timing when jumping at centre bounces was way off & Brisbane were able to win most of the clearances while he was rucking.

Josh Cripps, hmmm. His older brother seems to have got the majority of the footy talent in the Cripps family. I'm not sure Josh will be playing too many VFL games this season. He looks a long way off at this stage.
