By getting Taranto and hopper we’ve just nullified the only area they had us covered in.
Also the best thing about playing them every year round one is,
We almost always win but if we don’t it’s just round one.
If Carlton lose, they’re season will crumble before it even starts.

I have rewatched Round 1 recently to reconfirm what I remember of the game. Once Meatball was hurt, their midfield got a run on and they did it by putting big bodies through the guts. We looked meek because we had a centre circle of Cotchin, Edwards, Bolton for a lot of it and Cripps just swatted them like flies. At least with hopper and Taranto there is some mass in the centre.
Hopper would automatically become a tiger legend if he lined up Cripps early and put a massive tackle on him.

Reckon a fit and firing Dusty might make a difference to the midfield as well.
But last year we were totally (almost) reliant on meatball for our midfield to work well. When he and Cotch were fit we were stars. When not fit we were in major problems.
Add 2 more hard quality mids and the formula for undoing us changes so much it's ridiculous.
And i hope Sonsie comes on, that'd just be sweet if he can step into 2023 as a quality AFL player and make our depth stupid good.

in the afl survey a year ago the number one issue amongst fans was the rule changes and yet the afl funded media didnt even report on it

The stand rule is a blight on the game dunno how anyone can honestly say it has improved in he game in any way.

Some people don't like seeing pressure and the resultant 'chaos'. SHocking is one. therefore AFLX. Which ended up being something that very few people, not zero but close to it, wanted to watch. The stand rule limits pressure nd supposedly allows for more skills.
So coaches, who aren't stupid, drop their defenses deeper so that teams can play on from the free/mark and have to kick it to a contest. So the rule defeats itself, because the idiots running the AFL thought by solving one 'problem' they would have a final solution. It's never worked before, and won't work. Clubs are too smart and work out how to manipulate / defeat the rule change.
They keep making these changes and they keep running into the fact that other people outsmart them. Just stop. But they don't learn.
And yes, pointing out that all this manipulation of the game makes people annoyed and makes the game worse means you are excluded from the AFL's bounty. So the supposed experts just say 'brilliant idea SHocking' and then are shocked that it leads to ..... lower scoring and more congested footy.

I reckon last year we were the best, or close to the best everywhere bar the midfield. So to overuse my old analogy, we're a race car that had a dodgy engine. If the engine keeps breaking down you won't win races. We've just got ourselves a brand new top end engine to go with everything else. We can match or beat anyone anywhere on paper now. Hope that on paper become on field. Cause this could be a great year
