In thinking about our ruck situation, does anyone else think that there would be a better ruckman in state leagues around the country than a fit MK?

Always an aerobic beast, only in his early 30s, knows the game plan. If his body is fit and refreshed a 6month contract is a no brainer if we are just looking for cover this year.
I think Austin will have to perform some wizardry to draft a player good enough to play this season with pick 13.
If Tractor is in good shape, then he could fill a need later in the season.

We will have something like the 13th pick, but could still have access to players we are keen on.

The MSD is not like the National Draft. There isn't as much consensus and needs and list management play a (relatively) bigger part than talent.

In a normal draft, there's no hope the 3rd most talented kid makes it to pick 13. But at the MSD, clubs are picking for needs, for immediate injury cover, selecting long-term project rucks, mature agers etc. Not every team has a pick or wants to use a pick it has.

So the MSD is more strategic and there's a better chance one of our top few targets slide IMO.
Maybe, but which one are we? Is Carmichael the "3rd most talented" player or are we attempting to pick for need (a ready-made wing, perhaps)? The point is, I'd rather not have to speculate until after the draft, not before.

What's his play like?

Don't know anything about the lad, seems a decent size though - a cursory search says 189cm and 88kg.
Very raw and has a lot to learn defensively but is an offensive weapon.
Breaks out of stoppage really well and can kick a goal anywhere inside 60 metres.
Is a kick first footballer, with a bullet like pass. Is a good overhead mark.

Has a good tank also for a guy who has only done one pre season at SANFL level.

Huge up side.

Is he a decent mark? Would be good at his size

Doubt anyone will pick him up. Doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire in the VFL.
I'm presuming he's playing predominantly as a forward, because he isn't getting many hitouts, but he's also not getting a lot of goals.

Of the Carlton reserves players the only one I would look at is Hayes as we probably do need some wing options given Newnes probably doesn’t have much left in him past this season and IMO Setters isn’t going to make it as a winger (and surely we don’t have the cap space for a run at Amon or Brayshaw) which leaves us with just LOB and Cotters going forward.

That said if we do take Hayes it should be with our second choice as the overwhelming need is to get a KPP swing man so I’m hoping we have spoken to Ballenden (who it’s being reported has lodged extra financial terms) who seems like the best we can hope for from the MSD.

I agree, we are one injury off a crisis in both the ruck and key defensive posts. In ruck Pittonet looks a long way off and if Mirkov's injury is going to take a while then we only have TDK and no backup. Mirkov also doesn't look ready and before he was injured was monstered by Tom Campbell, who has been a fringe journeyman ruckman. Mirkov will be good, but needs development time. I also think TDK would be great up forward, especially with Harry injured if he didn't need to ruck, and even when Harry is back as a third tall who chops out in the ruck. I know many don't see the need for rucks but we have a dominant midfield that doesn't really need a dominant ruckman, but needs a good contest. In key defensive posts we only have Weitering and Young. We have no clue whe McGovern and OMac will be coming back and when they do they are injury magnets. Parks and Plowman are undersized, and Marchbank may or may not get on the park. Akuei is a year off being ready. We need one player there. So either we get a player who can play ruck and KPD or we need two players to fill those roles. Carmichael may be great, but we should only take him if we can fill the ruck and KPD roles with one player who can do both.

Montagna said on the w/end he was hearing Pitto was only 4 weeks away. 2-3 games after the bye, if so.

Not gonna lie, the thought of Kreuzer being our Clark Keating and miraculously playing in a flag team is tantalising.

Any decent talls that can have an immediate impact are not floating around at state level too often.

Just did a quick google search on some talls who were mature age pick ups...some very handy names here.

Ben Brown
Tom Stewart
Alex Silvagni
Jeremy Howe
Brody Mihochek
Mitch McGovern
Rowan Marshall
Callum Wilkie
James Podsiadly
Brian Lake

Could even throw in Ben Stratton, Dane Rampe and Bailey Fritsch who are shorter but basically play key position.

St Kilda picked up Jack Hayes as a forward ruck just recently and he had an immediate impact before his injury.

Sure, it would be hard for any player to come in mid season and impact. But history shows we could find a player and realistically we only need KPP depth, we don't need to find a star.

We have 3 rucks. This includes Mirkov who is a project a at least a year off, but maybe more. I think TDK is much more valuable as a 3rd tall and Pitto is a good and genuine ruck, but if you look at other teams they have more rucks with the exception of Fremantle (3 very experienced rucks who are resilient) Hawthorn (problems this week with all injured) Melbourne (All very experienced and resilient)

Adelaide (4) Frampton, Strachan, O'Brien, Tilthorpe (FR)
Brisbane (5) Fullarton (FR), Smith, Lane, Fort, McInerney
Collingwood (4) Grundy, Cameron, Cox, Begg
Essendon (4) Draper, Wright (FR), Bryan, Phillips
Fremantle (3) Darcy, Meek, Lobb (FR)
Geelong (6) Stanley, Blicavs, Tsapatalolis, Neale, Ceglar, Ratugolea (FR)
Gold Coast (5) Chol (FR), Witts, Casboult (FR), Conroy, Andrew
GWS (4) Preuss, Flynn, Briggs, Keefe (DR)
Hawthorn (3) McEvoy, Lynch, Reeves
Melbourne (3) Jackson, Gawn, Brown (FR)
North (4) Coleman-Jones, Goldstein, Xerri, Edwards
Port (4) Visentini, Hayes, Lycett, Skinner (FR)
Richmond (4) Colina, Ryan, Nankervis, Soldo
St Kilda (4) Ryder, Marshall, Campbell, Heath
Sydney (5) Ladhams, Hickey, Sinclair, Naismith, McAndrew
West Coast (5) Naitanui, Williams, Jamieson, Dixon, Stmadica
Bulldogs (4) Martin, Sweet, English, Darcy

We all know rucks get injured as it a brutal part of our game and we have 2 down now.

We need one more for depth and to help the ressies with game structure. We do need a key defender as well, but we are really light on in rucks.

If you are including guys like Dixon, Rat, Blix, Thilthorpe, Caz, Brown, Keefe etc as ruck options then so too is Young which means we have 4 ruckmen which IMO is more than enough even when 1 is a project type.

The problem is Young also acts as a KPP so IMO picking up a KPP swing man at the MSD is the best way to address our list imbalance in the short term and then we hit the draft (and possibly some affordable trade targets) for a long term fix.

I think we need a Levi type, rather than a pure ruck.
Somebody who can fill a spot as a ruck, or a key forward, or a key back. They can cover injuries in any of those areas, without demanding a best 22 spot, or unbalancing our development in the 2s.

Ballenden sounds like the right 'type', probably doesn't get to our pick.
But I don't think we should have 4 rucks on the list with only TDK a legit forward option of the 4.
