With the greatest respect for him it's unfathomable why we would offer him 4 years. His shoulder pings most years. He's a good ,honest solid soldier but no shark.

I think it would be a step backwards giving him 4 years. Regardless of whatever the market is.

Look at what other free agents are getting in terms of years - Suns are giving 4 years to Ben Long. There is a lot of variance in '4 years' too - is it 3 plus a trigger? Is the money less for a 4 year deal because you spread it across multiple years?

He's only 27 or so, I agree that the injury issues are a concern but I don't think we have many options. Particularly with Marcus dealing with long-term concussion issues.

I'm not a believer in meeting the market unless you have a genuine and ongoing need. That's been a recipe for disaster for many clubs over the years. Starting with Pitura (look it up ) all the way to Grundy.

He's not as good as he was before he was injury free and I can't see him getting back to it. For someone at 27 with his injury history I don't think it's a smart move. How good is he anyway ? We here and the club value him but he has limitations.

Don't get me wrong, if we press ahead I respect the decision. It's just not one I'd be taking if the terms are what I'm hearing.

In terms of Darcy Gardiner, I don’t have him in our best 22 if Adam’s was available now.

I prefer Payne. Strong as an ox, very strong overhead. Is improving in terms of disposal and decision making, and should continue as he plays more games.

In terms of depth, both Lester and McFadyen were very good this year in the VFL, and can fill the role of 3rd tall. Both 190cm and above. McFadyen still young.

I rate Lester above Gardiner.

For mine, Gardiner makes too many errors and gives away silly undisciplined free kicks and 50s…1 or 2 a game. Eg Jumping into Josh Daicos late. It does my head in.

Yes he was good on the weekend v dees, but these performances are too infrequent.

A player I really like, at 193cm, is Tom Highmore. We were into him but saints got in just before us the year he was drafted. Was very good in his first year, but squeezed out of the team most of this year. He dominated in the VFL this year. Could potentially get him for a very late pick.

Let Gardiner go, receive a compensation pick, aggressively pursue Highmore (if we don’t get him we still have enough depth).

Is “last year and this year” most years?

Nah I won’t stand for this Gardiner slander. Yeah he’s been down this year, but you’re talking as if that’s his entire career.

People forget how good he is, the reason Harris was able to float and intercept so effectively in 2019/2020 was because Gardiner was good enough to pick up the slack left by Harris leaving his man. As a system it worked perfectly.

Last year was a write off because he was injured most of it, but worth noting the game he initially came back in down at metricon he was playing out of his skin before then doing his shoulder again.

He has the talent, he’s proven he has the talent, he’s probably still just not 100% since his injury ridden 2021. His last two weeks have looked promising, if he gets back to where he was we ABSOLUTELY want to keep him.

A fit Darcy Gardiner is best 22.

aaron naughton down back for season 2023

Looking at the options on the market this year and then giving someone 4 years who isn't a young guy with potential but just based on who's there now and what the market is is what inexperienced fund managers do with people's money.
yup. why do we need to be looking for a trade in Gardiner replacement (if he chooses not to extend with us) when we already have a long term holds on the list? I'd rather draft a young promising defender from the state league than pay overs (due to bull market for KPDs this off season) for something we don't need.

Whether Gardiner is staying or going really depends on what happens to Franklin and Dunkley. If both of them nominates us then I see Gardiner leaving to free up cap space since he's a restricted free agent. I don't see Gardiner taking a pay cut at 26 years old. It's probably going to be the last big contract where he would want to cash in at his age.

I could see us trading Gardiner or FA compo with either 1st round pick these year or next year for Dunkley. We still have Lester on our list that I feel could replace Gardiner as that third tall.
