When McKenna was at the same age and time spent on the list as Madden has, he made the 22under22 team and was well entrenched in the Essendon best 22.
Bit unfair to compare different teams as we are a top 4 team. Not sure what Essendon were when McKenna was young and starting out. But it would be easier to get into a team that isn't very good, fast track their development and show their abilities.

Yes agreed. My thinking was Jimmy could have developed to the Mckenna level with more game time. Their attributes are similar. Mckenna is more confident but I think Jimmy might be a better kick and Mark akready.

The club obviously have an interest in McKenna but possibly have other options they may look at

A wing spot is a need for us, however someone on our list may very well make it their own in 2023

Hawks delisted Tom Phillips this year and i wonder if he is on our radar

He had an ankle injury, played 8 games for Box Hill. Average Disposals 24, Marks 5.3, tackles 5
Below only 4 AFL games (3 sub) but they won every game he played

Not many stats improving over time. That's not a trend you really want to see in a player.

Phillips has terrible disposal. He is 26 and is being delisted by the hawks. Says it all.

McKenna seems like a no-brainer assuming he is not going to cost too much in terms of cap space. Maybe we have a bit left for next season we can pre-load as much of his salary in so we don't hurt ourselves too much.

Irishman usually take longer. Pearce Hanley looked woeful early on - especially with, not surprisingly, game awareness. He was a gun at his best. He also showed good ability from early on with his disposal.

This is my worry with Madden, his kicking is still quite bad. He hits the odd target but i would have expected more improvement by now. I don't think aussie-born players can improve disposal much given all the years they have had pre AFL, but irish players can have sudden improvement. I think this year is D-Day for Madden on that front. If his kicking does pick up he could be handy. His closing speed is about the best i've ever seen to the naked eye, and he is more desperate than most of our defenders when the ball hits the ground, so i hope he gets one more go at it.

Gee's I hardly think wing is a need for us. Plenty on our list can and will do a far better job than Phillips.

(Log in to remove this ad.)

My Phillips post was just about a player delisted, and would the Lions have him on their radar ??. Consensus here on BF is no.
Lions may also not want to go anywhere near him

However, some posters think we have the wing covered. I don't think we have yet, but hopeful
It would be good if someone steps up and made the position their own other than Berry. But who will it be that's on our present list

Berry takes one wing, had a good season and looks more suited to the wing than an inside mid to me.
He plays consistant footy on the wing and will get better if left there, with small stints in the midfield
Yes he can play inside mid, but his form is patchy in my opinion when he plays in that position
Even as a tagger he was superb one week then average the next

I know we have players that can play the wing position. It's not like we can leave it vacant
In 2022 we tried : Sharp (5), Robbo (15 the most) now gone, Prior (12), Tunstall (3) with Dev Robertson & Ah Chee filling in at times

Others that had shortish stints on the wing to get us through the game. More for wingers bench relief that anything.
Bailey, Zorko, Lyons, McCluggage, Neale

Ah Chee:- Solid player we know what we get. But he gets thrown around a lot and is okay on the wing. Low disposal player
Sharp : Still young but i don't see anything in his AFL games yet to be best 22
Prior: Could make it his position with more improvement. But was not an automatic selection in 2022
Dev Robertson: Maybe but does not look like a natural winger. OOC in 2023. Played 2 finals so should get a gig but where
Tunstall: Not great against Demons on debut. Showed something v Dogs. Good VFL season. I have high hopes for him but needs to get in side first

Bailey on the wing is a waste of forward goal scoring power to me. Don't see him as a full time wing.
Zorko, Lyons, McCluggage & Neale can't really be considered. McCluggage would be great but he is locked in the middle now

With the addition of Dunkley and Ashcroft and Rayner likely to be in the middle more, time in the middle of the ground is going to be hard to come by. When you have a guy who made the AA squad playing on a wing it makes a lot of sense to play him there for significant periods of the game.

I also like Bailey in the wing role for a decent portion of games and with Zorko likely to play more forward using him more on the wing makes sense.

Also worth remembering that Fletcher is likely to start on the wing. He maybe won't be a day 1 starter (although he could be) but he should get games over the course of the year. His skills would be a nice addition to our midfield unit if he can get up and down the ground and find enough of it.

Hopefully visiting our new digs will have helped his decision making.
yes looks like good digs, but the commute to and from might not be too appealing, as I understand a number of players reside in inner to mid suburbs such as Camp Hill, Bulimba, Coorparoo etc
Would not be surprised if some of the running sessions during preseason are still held at Yeronga or Coorparoo

Bit unfair to compare different teams as we are a top 4 team. Not sure what Essendon were when McKenna was young and starting out. But it would be easier to get into a team that isn't very good, fast track their development and show their abilities.
challenging for a young player to break into a top 4 team and especially one that believes it is in the premiership window, hence IMO some of the reluctance of the coaching group to play some of the promising young fringe players, unless there is an injury to a senior/seasoned player.

they all reside there due to the proximity to where they train.

They have had plenty of notice where the main facility is going to be, so I wouldn't be surprised to find many players relocating to or new players living in the leafy inner west in places like Chelmer, Oxley, Corinda, Sinnamon Park, Jindalee, West Lake etc

I agree that Madden has missed out on a lot of footy and has limited opportunities. I also think because we are contender now, we are potentially better off playing someone who could perform at that level now instead of someone who might get their in the future but isn't necessarily best 22 at the moment.

When did Oxley become an inner west leafy suburb?

AFL.com reporting that we will do a pick swap with the Roos on Draft night:

"A deal involving pick 40 for a future third-round selection from the Lions as well as a later pick in this year's draft to use on Harvey has been worked through, which would give Brisbane important additional points to match bids on father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.
The Lions would be able to strike a deal as soon as the draft starts on Monday, November 28 to bolster their points ahead of the bids".

Leafy green suburb used to be code for something else when I was younger.
My and my brothers first job was pushing dads lawn mower around the suburb, mowing lawns. We eventually got a contract, and an old ute, to mow lawns for a community social housing organisation. We used to find a fair bit of leafy green that needed trimming.
