On this, I was in Melbourne for the T20 World Cup Final on Sunday. Was absolutely positive we weren't gonna get a game, but mother nature proved herself a cricket tragic by diverting all rainfall to NSW and Tassie. Until Monday that is, when Melbourne reverted to type... These were the conditions at either end of my flight home.

I recently got on the plane at Cairns at 32 and got off at Melbourne at 10. And it hasn't improved overmuch for 3 weeks.

Seriously, all this talk of commutes being slightly longer, come on. Imagine living in Victoria and living in the south-east, the best place to live, and come travelling north to Tullamarine or west to Footscray or even to Richmond, etc. 3km can take 40+ minutes. Brisbane is a glorified country town with commute delays to match. I miss it so much and this is not even going to worry the players. Then factor in the weather, it’s a no brainer. We’re one week basically from summer and we’re still waiting for Spring down here. Oh we did have that one warm week…that rained non-stop.

I think initially there will probably be some angst as the drive will most certainly be around 30 to 35 minutes for some of the players. Add in the couple of degrees extra heat out at Springfield and the fact it is preseason, just my opinion, but would not surprise if some training sessions involving high running loads are still held at Yeronga etc

If you were one of our better performing fringe players eg Dev, Prior, Payne, Lohmann etc and still not getting regular games in 2023, then lack of opportunities and perhaps the driving out to Springfield 5 days a week in preseason might just be the catalyst to leave.

My bet is it's the fringe player bit that will make them look for other opportunities.

1932 and 2010, I assume? ;)

I remember going home at the winter uni holidays from Brisbane to Cairns. 4 degrees in the morning in Brisbane, high 20s by the time we landed in Cairns. I was literally stripping off layers between the plane and the terminal.

Will take a spot on the senior list, as it is a pre season supplemental pick up though we won’t need to do any more delisting - we just will keep a free senior list spot in the draft and just take Ashcroft and fletcher (and upgrade Madden I think).

Basically for us it came down to whatever pick we would have left after matching bids at the end of the draft vs picking up McKenna. Absolute no brainer.
Pre-season supplemental selections go on to the rookie list, not the senior list. Think Jack Hayes, Mitch Cox, etc.

I assume our salary cap must be busting with the arrival of Dunkley, Gunston and McKenna. We have lost McStay and maybe have been able to reduce Darcy Gardiner's previous contract but things must surely be tight.

Zorko signed on for 1 and that would have been a reduced contract. He and Rich I believe will hang them up this season.

Yeah that’s my only concern with bringing in all these new players is just how tight the cap may be now, remembering the likes of Hugh, Cam, Bailey etc etc are probably going to be in line for upgrades in the next few years.

I guess we just have to trust the professionals running the club now that they know what they’re doing. No real reason to doubt them at this stage.

They’ve done an exceptional job to get us in this position, I don’t carry any doubt that it’s well under control.

Generally getting someone across you need to pay a premium, I think we’ve targeted players really well and avoided that bidding war process. The final reports about Dunkley, was our offer was basically the same as the dogs. That’s a real win for the club, and a sign of a well ran club.

We've locked Neale away for 5 years. On top of that got Dunkley at a par salary for 5. I fully expect Daniher's extension to be on the lower side compared to what he signed initially as part of trade. We've given ourselves a bit of room overall and with impending salary cap rise in the coming years, should be able to cover for the rest.

Even if the club has gone all in and exhausted the cap for 2023, I believe we're doing it in the perfect year when we need as much depth as possible across all lines. Looking good so far.

Melbourne's weather is seriously testing my resolve. Feeling cheated out of nice weather.

I won't lie, the thought of moving to Brisbane crossed my mind when I went up there for the Dees game this year.

If I were a young player, I would not be offput by the extra commute to go to the world class facilities, but would absolutely be offput by the idea of no Gabba for 3 seasons.

Wondering if they can fast track building whatever approved capacity Springfield has and just make it our home ground with 20-25k.

I am 100% thrilled with the facilty, so not here to complain.

The issue that can occur is not as much about travel as it can sometimes just change things.

Living in the belly of the Gabba all year, in Brissy, is how we’ve exsisted for a long time as poor as the facilities are. It really has made it a spiritual home on every level.

Sometimes a move away can just change things, saints move to Seaford was seen as disarsterous even though the facilty was 10 times better, some at the Bombers felt the move to the Hanger from Windy Hill was the day their cultural issues really kicked in, because the connection to their home was lost, even though the facilities were better.

I am not suggesting I am concerned about this - but new shiney things don’t always lead to better culture, performance and sometimes - there can be slight disconnection from the past.

I think us and the cats are the only 2 teams that actually live at their home ground and I right?

I think the new facility will be a game changer but there’s a watch on how it changes certain aspects over the next few years.

Do we still do a main training session on the Gabba each week, I’d hope so.

No money in the kitty for that. Maybe some will eventuate if ground does get used for Olympics

Also i might point out that when i visited the site last Wednesday no work has started on oval 2
Hopefully that is how things were planned and not due to running out of funds
That 2nd ground will be super important to growing the game and Lions brand in the area

Email just received from the club

The Brisbane Lions have signed Conor McKenna ahead of the 2023 season, with the Irishman joining the Club on a one-year deal.

McKenna, who played 79 games for Essendon between 2015 and 2020, returns to the AFL after spending the past two seasons playing Gaelic football in Ireland.

The 26-year-old nominated the Brisbane Lions as his preferred Club and will join the Lions through the pre-season Supplemental Selection Period, as he looks to re-ignite his AFL career.

General Manager Football, Danny Daly, said the Club was thrilled to have McKenna become a Brisbane Lion.

“We see Conor being a player who further improves our list, particularly as he adds both run and speed,” he said.

McKenna became known for his dashing run in his time with Essendon, where he led the league for total running bounces (79) in 2019.

“I am delighted to be joining the Lions at such an exciting time for the Club, both on field and off field, including the great new facilities at Springfield,” he said.

McKenna and the Brisbane Lions will commence pre-season training on December 5.

Very interesting that it's only a 1 year deal
A bit strange
I would think it would be McKenna that requested that
Easy enough to resign if all things go well for him this year
Probably a good thing for both parties
