I'll have a crack.

B: Gov Young Newman
HB: Saad Weiters Williams
C: Acres George Walsh
HF: Cunners Charles Martin
F: Durds Harry Motlop

R: Pitto Crippa Cerra

I/C: Doch TDK Kennedy Fish

Emg: Marchy JSOS Boyd Cotters

Hard to fit them all in if we have a relatively fit list - but the 4 interchange would give us some flexibility

  • Doch can slot into defence/mid depending on how we're travelling.
  • TDK ruck/forward to give Pitto a chop out, or become the 3rd tall if necessary. Can't keep playing JSOS as the 2nd ruck.
  • Kennedy rotating through the midfield with Crippa/George/Kennedy/Walsh.
  • Fish rotates with Cunners/Martin at half forward - Cunners has stints in the midfield during the game giving us extra run.

A fit Jack Martin plays every week.

Interesting that a lot of people seem to think the drafting of endurance types is some kind of knock on Cottrell.

Reckon he plays almost every week, Voss wants MORE blokes who can tirelessly cover the ground and this guy does it better than almost anybody else in the comp. They will find a role for him. He is growing into his game very well IMO, similar trajectory to Armfield who had a lot of knockers early days but ended up carving out a very serviceable career.
Love the way he goes about it, plays the role he is assigned to by the coaches each week whether that’s on the wing or as the defensive forward…

Does a lot of unheralded defensive running which helps with coverage of the oppositions ball movement and with our own transition as well…

A no thrills type of player who although not flashy but certainly improved parts of his game this past season, along with a handful of others that if they can improve parts of their game as well this year along with a clearer injury run then that should set us up for a strong year…

Not sure he'll be best 22 consistently, depending on injuries, but his improvement last season was nothing short of remarkable.

He believes....

Let’s see…
He’ll definitely play some games again next year particularly if he improves on last year, just a matter of how many depending on a variety of intangibles, like all of us we want everyone to improve & step up another level…

Consistency is what sought the good from the bad, one thing Cottrell is, he's consistent.

As good as any I’ve seen. I’d have Jack S instead of Jack M but kudos!

He’s got the heart, determination and dedication, also lacks nothing of going in and putting the body on the line when it’s his turn to go DH…
Beauty about footy is all you can ask for are these qualities no matter how one has managed to get onto a clubs list, still learning improving & giving it everything he has cant ask for more than that whatever happens…

HF Martin C Curnow Kennedy

Int - Hewitt Williams. Boyd. C Durdin TDK
Best 23 I’ve seen to date.

Players on standby from R1 include - JSOS, Cottrel, Carroll, Cuningham, Honey..

Geez we’re building some depth. Can’t find a spot for Plowman, marchbank, Martin, Cuningham, Owies, O’Brien Dow Carroll Kennedy and all the new draftees bar hollands (who I think will start round 1 in a forward pocket wing or interchange).

I can see a few unique players stepping up and taking spots early in the season like Cotterell.

We're getting loaded for wing options.

Acres a given for one spot.

The other wing is a 'put your best foot forward' race between LOB, Cotters, Hollands and Binns....

Not sure LOB is a cert.... Hollands and Binns both know how to accumulate the stats....

Here's the Fox Footy attempt:

CARLTON

B: Caleb Marchbank, Jacob Weitering, Lewis Young

HB: Adam Saad, Mitch McGovern, Sam Docherty

C: Blake Acres, Patrick Cripps, Adam Cerra

HF: Jack Martin, Charlie Curnow, Jack Silvagni

F: Zac Fisher, Harry McKay, Jesse Motlop

FOLL: Marc Pittonet, Sam Walsh, George Hewett

I/C: Tom De Koning, Matt Kennedy, Nic Newman, Zac Williams

In: Blake Acres, Oliver Hollands, Lachlan Cowan, Jaxon Binns, Harry Lemmey

Out: Jack Newnes, Liam Stocker, Will Setterfield, Tom Williamson, Will Hayes, Luke Parks, Oscar McDonald

WE SAY: The Blues’ best 22 for 2023 is as talented and loaded as any side in the competition as Michael Voss’ group will enter the new season with as strong a prospects as anyone. It comes despite a much more quiet trade period from Carlton compared to in previous years, with Blake Acres the sole addition, but a valuable addition of that to hold down the wing with elite two-way running. Oliver Hollands looks to be the pick of the draft bunch in terms of earliest debuts, but he’ll find it hard to crack into a side that is so well-rounded. The Blues’ back six feels the most settled it’s been in years, while their midfield could well be the deepest in the competition, led by Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh and George Hewett. There may yet be some uncertainty with the forward mix as we’ve left out both Corey Durdin and Matt Owies. Marc Pittonet stays in the No. 1 ruck role over Tom De Koning for now, although the club could give the latter increased opportunities in the position.

Whilst I appreciate JSOS is flexible and super hard working, if he doesn't really come on (develop/make a mark) as a legitimate 3rd/4th tall soon, is there a spot for him in the 22?

Sure, output can't be judged on goals alone, and 2022 saw him battered when playing the 2nd ruck role, but surely he must need to be looking at a goal a game and better in 2023?

Could TDK play as a legitimate 3rd tall? Not on current exposed form.

Kemp? He's potentially anything this kid, maybe even a Kouta type player, but it's hard to see where he fits in a 22 in the backline with Marchy and Brackets (and even Newman) well ahead in the pecking order.

Martin? All comes down to fitness and injury - when out there and fit, he's simply such a hard guy to stop, has as much talent as anyone playing the game.

I certainly like the idea of letting him play out of the goal square (at times). One on one, he's all but unbeatable with decent delivery.

Just had his best season at AFL level. I'd argue he has come on, he's just been a victim of his own flexibility given we've relied on him in a number of positions across the park.

Jack will always be in the conversation for best 22 given his smarts and flexibility.

4th at the club for scoring shots in 2022, 6th for shots per game.

Conversion (and the aforementioned flexibility) are the only reasons why he didn't reach that goal-per-game metric in 2022, he's absolutely got it in him if the side is settled.

Getting hard to pick which is nice:

Gov Weiters Nick N
Zac Young Saady
Blake Crippa LoB
Cunners Charlie Cotters
Durds Harry Mots

Pitt George Cez

Walshy Doc TDK Matty K

Would like to see playing: Boyd Carrol Marchy Honey Kemp

Happy for the draftees to bide their time unless the MC see fit

Some boys are really gonna have to stand out this pre season to get a gig

I think that is a very good swing at our starting line up. I like it, although they will go with Pitto as starting ruck. I would have TDK stay on at the expense of prob Marchy or SOS. Need to see TDK take that next step early in the season.

Don't mind the side, but you keep leaving Boyd out. Emergency at the very least
