Tickets still selling well for st kilda gws - it seems the front half of the top level is sold all the way around. Looks to me it will get somewhere between 65,000 to even 70,000 which would be excellent. Last week I was in the camp that marvel would be better suited, but glad I don’t work at the afl.
happy to have been wrong about this. 65k+ is amazing for Saints/Giants.

Ye it looks like they up to row Z level 4 in the MCC too, row V in the Ponsford, Row R in the Southern stand and the Northern stand hasnt seen any bays go on sale. Looks slightly ahead of the Melbourne Brisbane Semi Final last year which got 62K. Expecting just under 70K with a massive neutral turnout because of the crap weather Thursday/Friday (Thursday clearing up though) and inability for neutrals to get seats for those two games.
All the unused allocations have just gone on sale for Saints Giants and the Northern stand level 4 has gone on sale too.

I remember the last final I went to in Melbourne was Essendon v North in 2014, even that only got 78k. For saints v giants to hit 70k would be amazing, it shows how much the game has grown in just 10 years.
The effect of a decade with no finals is huge on supporter bases. Melbourne 2018 showed just how much latent support the smaller clubs that have had little success do actually have.

I think that this is definitely a factor. The two elimination final hosts have not played in a non-covid final for a decade / 12 years.

I do think also that the game has grown over that period. Average attendance is pretty much at the pre suns/giants expansion level and that probably masks the level of growth as there are also more people going to fewer games

Hopefully Carlton V Swans will get to the low 90ks.

The more interesting match is the Saints v Giants anything over 65,000 would be amazing considering that the Giants have very little support in Melbourne.

MCC estimates:

pies/dees 95-96k
blues/swans 94-95k
saints/giants 68-70k

Not sure blues/swans can reach that in the atrocious weather, a few in the MCC might stay away me thinks.

Without much knowledge id say:
Pies/dees-94k
Blues vs swans-91k
Saints vs gws-65k

I reckon there was a real resurgence in interest in finals around 2016.

The baseline seems so much higher these days.

These are all the finals (excl GF) that have reached 90k since the finals expanded to 6-8 teams:

1991-2006
2007 PF
2010 PF
2011 EF
2013 EF
2015 EF
2017 QF EF
2018 QF EF SF PF
2019 QF PF
2022 QF SF

I think we may have got lucky with successive clubs breaking through and challenging for/winning flags after long droughts. WB in 2016, Rich in 2017, Melb in 2018 etc which became infectious and elevated finals as big events again.

It’s crazy to think that St Kilda v GWS has a great chance of outdrawing finals like Coll/WB from 2010 or even Gee/Haw in 2014.

That Saints v GWS game would require a big neutral turnout in the AFL and MCC members to get there. I have a feeling that it might be a case of neutral fatigue as many will go to one or both of the Thursday and Friday night games and may not feel like backing up again for a Saturday afternoon game (particularly with the demographics in the MCC). If they have a big walk up allocation for AFL members, then I think that will certainly help.

Because of stadium capacity limits, it really is interesting to wonder how many people would turn up to different teams finals.

In the smaller sports like A-League and NRL and BBL they can generally move finals to a larger stadium and you can see what their total pull is. It means they get crowds to their finals that are multiple times bigger than their home and away crowds.

But with the AFL (especially non-Victorian teams) the finals sell out so regularly that we don’t get to see that maximum attendance.

Surely a Pies vs Bombers final would get over 200,000 if such a stadium existed. I reckon an Eagles vs Dockers final would get over 300,000.

Not sure a
It is bucketing down at the moment. Could be a few no-shows for people sitting on level 1
Not sure about that. Level 1 filling nicely and where I am. Most would be reluctant to jot show up given the effort and cost to get tickets.

If I know one thing, it's that the G can fill up real quick.

Would be good if one day we magically opened our eyes and saw the figures for all sellout finals near the 99-100k mark.

Yes a great crowd considering the rain came at exactly the wrong and most likely cost at least a couple of thousand no shows.
It will also be interesting to see how forcast bad weather effects the match tomorrow night.
