Looks like they have blocked off level 3 behind both goals and 1 wing. Looks a lot better for viewing and should be done at games at the mcg like todays game.

From memory, I think they’ve done this at the MCG in the past with blocking off the Level 4 Ponsford Stand for some matches. The top of the AFL Members probably didn’t need to be open for a match such as today.

You can't double dip for seats already sold as much as you want to fill the stadiums. People who buy a one off reserved seat can decide not to attend a game for various reasons and leave the seat/s free. It is not just home club members who are no shows on the day.

Clubs won't have a bar of just having GA on the top decks as they'd miss out on a lot of revenue.
The system is broken, no doubt about it. Problem as you say is that the fix isn't obvious so the problem remains the status quo.

I don't think that general public GA should go on sale until the week of the game. Sounds a little out there but hear me out.

I've put my ideas inside a quotation to avoid the length of this post becoming too long

1. For each home club, bays are set aside as needed for reserved seat holders. But we're going to change this terminology, it now becomes priority/preferred/reserved member. There are different tiers here (guaranteed lvl2, guaranteed wing etc). This excludes the top tier memberships which include functions etc.

2. Non-GA tickets go on sale at the start of the season. Released at one bay at a time for each category (Lvl1 and 2 only). If both of these sell out, then level 3 (Marvel) or 4 (MCG) gets sold one bay at a time as needed.

3. At 2 weeks beforehand, a game needs to be designated as an expected sellout or not a sell-out. If a sell-out is expected, members have one week to confirm their attendance (ie from 14 days until 7 days before the game). Works like the GF ballot, everyone is guaranteed a seat within their paid area. Members who don't opt in receive a credit towards membership renewal or the merch store (pro-rata)

4. One week before the game (for a designated sell-out), any seats of reserved members who aren't attending go on sale to the general public as reserved seats. It is assumed that a designated sellout will not have any GA.

5. One week before the game (for a non sell-out game), any bays which haven't been sold as reserved seat bays get converted into GA bays and published on the website. Members can then buy GA tix on their phone or at the gate until sold out.

Side note: GA access members are not guaranteed entry into any particular match. They will be given the opportunity to upgrade to a reserved seat at any time (including a priority window for the released members seats in point 4).

This scenario only plays out a few games a year (Dreamtime, KB, Anzac Day plus a couple more at the G and Marvel). We can't be having 80% capacity at games where 150% of capacity wants to buy attend.

Couldn't disagree more. Why should I have to sit in the back row of the top level just to make it look better for TV?

I saw a post on one of these threads (it might have been the latest thread to bag GWS and GCS) but I can’t find it. But the forumer stated that GWS games on tv in Sydney get lower views than non Sydney teams.

Can anyone show with data if that is true or not? I’m not trying to bag them. I’m just curious from the statistical point of view.

I posted that the GWS games only get marginally above the non Sydney teams. Just Google AFL ratings for AFL or go to Footy Industry. From memory last season it was about 40k for Swans, 29k for Giants and 25k for other clubs. Horrible figures all around really in a city of 5.5m. Similar to Storm in Melbourne. This does not include Fox/Kayo, just network 7.

1. The Swans get far more than the Storm in Melbourne. The Storm got 14K on channel 9 last Sunday, just plucking the most recent game. Also, as always, these numbers are relatively inflated as ratings start from 410pm rather than 320pm for AFL games - i.e shorter game in better ratings zone
2. The Giants games are often not prime time games, unlike most of the games non NSW teams that a broadcast in Sydney, as well as Storm games
3. The numbers are actually better than any other not traditional code in the country (i.e. outside of Brisbane AFL). NRL rarely gets 29k across Melbourne , Adelaide and Perth on 9 on thursday and friday nights

Anyone know how well tickets are selling in the AFL reserve or the MCC for Collingwood vs Adelaide. Probably would be a lot of walkups but I’m still curious

In the AFL all of levels 2 & 2A, almost all level 1 and about half of the front third of level 4 are gone.

More than I would've expected as I'd have assumed most people would save the fees and walk up (as I am).
