Add to Gold Coast's tally the two extra first round draft picks they will add to next years draft for trading out their early picks.

So Saints get 1 first round draft pick 2023, and 1 in 2024.
Gold Coast get 4 first round draft picks in 2023, and at least 3 in 2024.

And can then trade out their first for more future firsts and use scraps to make up the points or get some players for free and use points to make up the picks. Dogs got Treloar for free because if they hadn't traded for him they would have had to give up those picks for JUH.

Sides should get one free hit per draft and pay for a first round player with a first round pick. If they don't have it they give up next year's.

Gold Coast is reaping players that would have been developed at Southport anyway. Southport has always been a fruitful training ground and Nick Riewoldt was trained up by them.

I really like the look of Edwards.

Is genuine ruck height, looks to be fairly mobile for his size, but what I really like the look of is two things:

1) He looks like he has actual ruck craft, which is a nice change rather than ignoring that completely in favour of pure athleticism only.
2) He looks a fantastic contested mark. A good outlet down the line (think: Gawny)

Would take.

So a Dunstan/Bytel/Curran clone?
I bet none of them were named captain of their draft year Team of the Year.

Stevens has averaged 28.8 possessions, 5.0 tackles and 4.5 inside 50s across 13 games.

Maybe not a lot of "upside" but he's looks a guaranteed 50+ game's player for whoever picks him up.

But… he is still on the board at 30

He might prove everyone wrong and be a champion.

But 18 clubs don’t often get it THAT wrong

One way to look at that though is how will they fit all of these players with the salary cap in 5-6 years time. I can picture a few of their players demanding 800000+ in their prime. Defence looks suspect too. When you have a deep midfield then you will have solid B graders leave because they are looking for a better opportunity and/or more money.

People said GWS and GC would win multiple flags with their super generous draft hand, but it didn’t happen. Not every top ten pick will be a star. Sport is also never that predictable.

Part of that was having to build from the ground up. The current system looks like the AFL is willing to reward sides that cull their list and crash hard. No point in being half good. Sides in the middle of the ladder are penalised to make GC and North stronger.

If GC were perennial finalists like GWS there'd be huge blowback from the Clubs that the system is unfair. If they finally get better the AFL might consider change...just in time for the Tassie concessions to wreck the draft anyway

The way football is being played these days the value of good small forwards has gone up a lot in my opinion.

Yep Geelong probably got more out of Stengle than Cameron in their GF. Hill was huge this year too.

Same could be said for your man schoenmaker..
I’m not talking him up as a star and have openly said anyone taken from here will have a lot of red flags and need time.

I want shoenmaker as he has a genuine elite skill: his kicking.

You can’t find that in a lot of prospects.

You can however find ball pigs - dime a dozen and a ball pig 30+ in the draft isn’t the messiah.

I wonder if we REALLLY want Edwards we'd use that future 2nd rounder to move up to the Eagles Pick?

Only way to ensure we get him IMO
Doubt it.

They have been knocking back trade offers for it today.

Keep in mind. It’s also their second selection for the draft.

Their first was pick 1 and they are “rebuilding”

Everyone frothing at the mouth for this kid.

But there has to be some major red flags to be 30+ in the draft

Clubs seem to have decided that those one position inside bulls are out of style. Port were trying to hock Olly Wines a couple of years off a Brownlow. I don't get it. If you have a good one it's like having a star ruck. It makes a massive difference. He looks like one of those guys that could win a Brownlow and 10 years ago would have been a top 10 pick.

Slow and not damaging.

Not slow, more one paced. And he has elite kicking for his position. He's not going to be a spread running sprinter but he could be a Paddy Cripps type of extractor.

I think Dunny was SA captain.

Great result last night!!
Ballsy play taking Collard but I love that we’re backing in our structures and support network to make it work. Feel like we finally have the coaching and support staff to develop raw talent like him. Been a real issue of ours for a long time. Feels great to actually trust the club to knock it out of the park.

If the rumours are true, I don’t want schoenmaker anywhere near the club. Can’t have personalities like that tainting the good momentum we have going with the younger core of players.

I’m saying that, I feel like Wilson is a great fit for us. Super driven and knows that it will take hard work and buy in. Slightly awkward but a nice young kid. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that he will gel perfectly with Phillipou, Owens and co on their unrelenting path to success. They are our chance at finally winning a flag.

His YouTube footage suggests he can turn the ball over a bit by hand when under pressure but he has the raw skill set to become an elite running outside mid/forward. Doesn’t seem overly fond of excessive contact though so I’m hoping our coaches can breed that out of him. Once again, I trust in us to make it happen.

Onto tonight, hoping we trade back in and end up with 2 of:
M. Edwards
C. Simpson
O. Murphy
A. Roberts
A. Hastie
C. Hall
K. McAuliffe

And picked up 29 disp in his VFL game with the Cats

OMG, we'd have been better off taking him with the Collard pick if we wanted him that badly.
We have the 3rd pick, if Edwards is gone, oh well, we obviously are not desperate.
If we can't get him we might get someone just as good next year with our second.
