Crouch continues a very bad trend of St Kilda players being forced into retirement before their time.

Armitage, J Steven, K Stevens, Roberton, Carlisle, even Ross. I'm probably forgetting a few. When you're losing key players at the age of 30 instead of 33 it leaves a massive hole in the list that is not easily replaced by an extra 18 year old rookie.
And a lot of those guys were cooked well before they turned 30yo.

Back in the day the same happened with the likes of Ball, Goose, X, Penny, Brooks etc, but with them being even younger still.

We haven’t had a lot of luck this century.

If you want to feel a bit better about our draft don’t listen to the Unpluggered podcast with Shifter Sheehan, he compared Travaglia to Jarryn Geary. :drunk: Was obviously a big wrap for him but jeez could’ve come up with something better than that. 🤣

Thought the same thing as soon as I heard it.

If Travaglia has the guts of Geary, with his better athletic ability, he'll be an absolute weapon.
Kind of sick of people bagging Geary.

Yep Geary was also pretty damn good one on one, rarely lost a contest... and also could intercept. Geary in a more athletic rig and better kicking skills sounds good to me!

With almost the last pick in the rookie draft you’d be rapt with Geary but you’d be a bit flat if you took him with pick 8.

I like the Will Day comparison better!!

I mean, we all love Gears but he'd the first to admit he wasn't overly talented and just got the absolute most out of what he had. I dont think it's unfair to have higher aspirations and exceptions for a top 10 pick than someone who got the most out of their limited ability.

Geary was an endurance beast but lacked a bit of the finer skills. He was real heart of a lion in the body of a wallaby though. I reckon Trav is fast, tough and decently skilled. If he has the toughness and work ethic of Geary with the extras he could be a star.

Trav being compared to Geary in terms of courage all but confirms the legitimacy of the comparisons to Will Day since he's known for his attack on the ball

I'll wait till 2025 and see.

even though Hall was injured part of the year, i couldnt understand in giving him the 18 month contract. oh we will see.

We had to. Hall stipulated the 18 month contract before the draft (just as numerous others have done too)

He knew he was gonna be selected so it was smart to give himself a season & a half to lock in a list spot.

I think Shehan was referring to his competitive nature.

Hawthorn were going to pick him the pick after ours

Will Day is elite. They hardly won a game until he came back into the side. He'd be their most valuable player.
Will Day "elite" - I've heard it all now.

If thats the standard then we're cruising - NWM, Phillipou, Wilson Owens and Caminiti are now all elite.

NWM I'll give you... the others haven't shown nearly as much as Day.

Ask 100 neutrals who watch most games to rank those players and Day wouldn't fall out of the top 2 for any of them.

I agree but the thing is I don't even rate NWM as elite (yet).

Elite these days seems to mean anyone on an AFL squad as opposed to what it actually means which is multiple AA at a minimum.

To suggest Will Day is elite is a bit demeaning to the truly elite players in our comp.

Elite young talent

Young players are labelled based on their talent and what they project to be

Harley Reid is barely an above average player at present but people call him a star because that’s what he projects to be

If Wilson was say 25 yrs old, no one would give a crap who he is. It’s because he’s 19 that people label him a future star

The only true elite players in that under 24 age bracket are Daicos Sheezel Butters etc

Yeah and I'm "elite" - for an aging boomer (with a dodgy left knee) who can' kick over a jam tin.

Woo hoo for me!!!!!
