Not a bad result for us at all tbh...

Murphy looks like he could develop into a high quality key defender. Needs to pile on some size but he looks like he has a skill set that fits in with modern footy. If Van Es can develop into our monster defender, Murphy could be a nice intercept marking side kick for the next decade.

I'm not 100% sold on Collard... but with Tholstrup & Edwards possibly available around #26 we have some good options.

Johnston looks like a player at #41... his highlights look as good as many rated much higher. Moves beautifully with nice skills and decision making (albeit in the highlights package.)

With DMac's delisting I wouldn't be surprised if we do some draft night trading if someone we really like is still available between our 2nd & 3rd picks.

If Collard is available at our second i'd grab him for sure.
Murphy ahead of Edwards...yeah i think so, i prefer a mid, but i think Murphy is rated very highly.

I think my whiteboard round our first pick would look something like.
Wilson
Windsor
Leake
Murphy
Collard
Charlie Edwards
Tholstrup

I am concerned re Murphys build/frame he is going to take a lot of years to develop the strength/size, to even see if he will make it at the level. I havent seen any evidence of an ability to defend man on man, getting by solely on his reach.

I dont see him as any better a prospect than Oscar Adams was, and to take such a gangly kid with our first pick would be risky IMO.

If hes still around at our second pick then consider him.
Comparing a kid like Murphy to Adams is quite bizarre TBH.

Adams was a pick in the 50's for a reason.

Murphy is rated in the teens for a reason.

Harris Andrews doesn't really defend man on man... neither does Darcy Moore.

Both were also gangly AF when drafted.

I wouldn't touch any of the WA kids around our picks TBH.
Murphy a risk but l haven't seen enough to have a strong opinion, but he seems to be competitive and not shy of contact which are 2 big ticks in my book. If his physical testing points to fast twitch muscling then it's a yes from me.

Edwards and Johnston would round out an all Dragons intake which l like too.

I really don't know how we'd get another pick prior to 40, but add Gothard to that list and we'll have made out very very well.

I'm not keen on giving up high picks on any KPDs.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a few shocks on draft night... with the 'throw a blanket over' nature of the draft after the top 7 or so, there may be a few sliders. Especially if some teams pick purely on needs... the interesting ones for us will be what Melb, Syd, Ess & GWS do.

Could someone like O'Sullivan slip?

The updated ESPN top 50 just came out...Charlie Edwards at #38.

Gothard looks classy but he's quite low production. I prefer Collard to be honest. He's more the Jamie Cripps style attacking small forward. Gothard seems to set up others more than do the damage himself. I'm worried he's more of a Billings type. I'd like a small forward who has a bit of losing down space and attacking flair.

Darcy was 93 kg when drafted , 8kgs more than Murphy

Talent is talent IMO.

If you have the chance to draft the next Harris Andrews or the next Will Brodie, who are you taking?

I'm not locked in on Murphy at #13 by the way. TBH I'm leaning towards Tholstrup unless there's a slider of note. He reminds me of Zac Bailey in many ways.

That looks all over the shop. Cooper Simpson I'd forgotten about and could also do worse than looking at Phillactides with a late pick.

I've gone off Tholstrup but could do worse. Andrews was an academy kid who looked like a star forward. I think he lead the goal kicking in his draft year. Picked up with a late pick. I'd rather persist with Howard to be honest.

A few strange ones there for sure.

The write up on Simpson makes him sound like one of those Windhager like gems.

To me he's a maybe at our second pick.
If he's still there with our third pick grab him and run off giggling hysterically.

I’m wary of skinny tall defenders, particularly with a first pick…rather try to get Shoenmaker with our second pick, already 91 kg with a magnificent kick!

watched him plenty... i dont see how he's in our side in 3 years time TBH. hes nothing like zac bailey

Apart from the size, body shape, forward-mid role, goal kicking, cameos in the midfield...

Who knows who's in our side in 3 years time... if he gets drafted, plays well and keeps getting better then he's probably a monty to be in someone's best team in 2027.

Shoenmaker is NOT a key defender. Murphy is.
