List Mgmt. 2023 Draft Thread - Part I

Wants to play like Cal Wilkie? Having a 200cm Wilkie is a cheat code and would set us up for 15 years. Seems to have the right idea about what he needs to do once he enters the AFL which is good, already setting goals early.

I know people don't want to pick a KPD early but in recent years they have havent really been busts outside of McAsey and DGB (debateable if he is even a KPD). I'm all for picking him at our first pick if Wilson, Leake and Windsor are gone.

We have three 3rd round picks next year. Surely they can find a dceent young key defender to develop. We need speed but wont be unhappy if they choose Murphy as long as the following two picks they grab speed

We just delisted a typical 3rd round defender.

Got bored tonight so I did the first 60 picks of the draft in my own little phantom, my aim is to try to put Cal Twomey out of a job so, here goes

I had us taking Tholstrup, C.Edwards and Moir with our picks,

I don't rate the Key position players that highly in this years draft. They all seem to lack the right attributes at this stage, in my opinion. I definitely wouldn't snarl if we picked up a Murphy, but I definitely think the Tholstrups, Hardeman types have more upside/pizazz.

Are we actually "linked" to any of these players .... Edwards, Simpson, Tholstrup, Murphy, etc....

How can we be linked? It is draft and not trade time where you try and get a player to nominate you.

If anything in the draft you want to keep your interest in a player quiet.

Our club will have ranked the players on offer, but who we will get will largely depend on who the other clubs take prior to us. And different clubs will also have different rankings.

Our picks are all late enough that our recruiters will be hoping that players we are keen on will slide to us.

That Simpson kid looks like he fits our needs! I've literally not seen any other videos or done a scrap of research, so reading thru this thread is a bit like flipping through a phone book. HOWEVER!

I hope we draft MIDFIELDERS with our first two selections, the most aggressive, explosive, footy smart & competitive pure mids available! We need young kids with a win only attitude, who also won't be afraid to put in the work on the track. No shrinking violet, vanilla milkshake sipping or fruit toast sympathising allowed! Alpha pigs only, the type who sleep on a bed of stone, eat raw meat for breakfast & when they run straight ahead the bush makes a path for them as they go. 🪨

After this, best available as rated.

I’m all aboard the C Edwards train. Got that X factor.

Edwards and Simpson would really change up the pace of our midfield. Both look more like what Lyon likes. Runners that can win their own ball and impact with their touches. Both have quick minds and that X factor. We'd be a fast moving side.

Seems to have a similar style to LDU

Yes please

I was trying to think of someone he plays like and that's a pretty good comparison. Luke Parker has some of that too, can put the jets on when he's chased and hits the ball at pace. Especially when he was young.

Not sure he was suggesting he was, just saying that he’d rather take him over Murphy.
Reckon it would be a great result if we end up getting:
1st - Ollie Murphy
2nd - Charlie Edwards
3rd - Cooper Simpson

Feel like that would address our list needs quite nicely. Worried Edwards won’t last until our second so it’s a gamble not taking him with our first though 😬
We’d need to pick Edwards first, there’s numerous clubs interested in him according to Chris Toce…I’m a fan of Cooper Simpson & I doubt he’d slide to our 3rd pick!

One of the biggest Alpha kids is Tholsrum

They’re just players projected to be around our first couple of picks

Reading through Sheehan's midfielder's list.
Tarkyn O'Leary & Cooper Simpson seem good for us, I think we do have interest?
Also, Kristian Ferronato & Kane McAuliffe, big-bodied with speed.
And it's interesting that C.Edwards & DeMattia are seen by some as projected midfielders, but have played a lot of their footy in the backline.

Such a St.Kilda thing to do when we have needed mids for the past decade.
The dumb thing to do would be taking a mid at our pick just so we can say we drafted a mid instead of getting the best prospect available, which is every chance to be a KPP or half back or half forward based on all the experts talent rankings.

Disagree, what is dumb is repeating our mistakes of the last ten years
We need two mids, and who says Murphy is best available ahead of the list of mids at our pick.
I suppose a key defender will get a lot of development as our mids are crushed game after game though, so yeah good plan

There are some really good mids like you describe ...in the top 10 of the draft.
After that its going to be a compromise.
It'll be a mid with known flaws, or someone who "might" become a good mid.
So you might need to settle for a kid who eats cornflakes for breakfast , or an absolute animal of a guy who just isn't that good at footy.

You do know that family would have been given that surname by white/s or had chosen a european name because thats what their new world demanded. Every indigineous family had their own traditional name, but most early settlers were ignorant of the fact. So perhaps you can consider it being poor form and ignorant to be taking the p*ss re his surname.

Without wanting to dive into politics too much, the below observation from one of Australia's most esteemed academics provides an interesting contrast to the usual narrative.

"Stanner goes onto to make the observation this likely occurred across the country.

"… for every Aboriginal who, so to speak, had Europeans thrust upon him, at least one other had sought them out. More would have gone to European centres sooner had it not been that their way was often barred by hostile Aborigines. As late as the early 1930s I was able to see for myself the battles between the encroaching myalls and weakening, now-sedentary groups who had monopolised European sources of supply and work"."

You can only draft the kids who are in the draft.
Yes it would be nice if we could draft Jamie Cripps and Christian Petracca with our first two picks.
But if we go looking for the next best and draft someone who washes out completely, THAT'S DUMB.

Whoever we draft is unlikely to fix your concerns about our mids being crushed in the next couple of years.
Windhager is two years in and just finding his feet. Byrnes another year older than that.
You don't just pull a kid out of a sardine can and go , "oh good, 18 disposal/game midfielder ready to go".

So it was a dumb mistake taking NWM with a first round pick?

The dumbest mistakes we have made is that we haven’t been able to take the best available talent with our picks, wherever that position may be.
