still dont understand the wilson love, underwhelming as all hell

Think poor man’s Sam Walsh/Mitch Duncan.

More outside then inside player right now. But has shown he can play inside.

Elite aerobic and athletic abilities (see below)

“He covers serious ground in each post, highlighted by his 2km time at the recent National Draft Combine, placing second with an effort of 5:52. What it may look like at the next level is a role on the wing where Wilson can accumulate as he does on the outside, leaning on his speed-endurance mix.

The 18-year-old's all-round athleticism is another of his strengths, also showcased at the combine. He sprung out of the box to notch the top running vertical jump (98cm), in addition to top 10 finishes in the standing vertical jump (76cm) and agility test (8.263 seconds). How that translates on-field is Wilson's deceptively good overhead marking when playing forward, and his eye-catching evasiveness around the ground.”

He also likes to get forward and adds scoreboard impact

I quite like the look of joel Freijah, tall wingman plenty of speed, endurance, kicks goals and is strong in the air. I know this is supposed to be an ordinary draft but the more I watch the more I like. This might turn out to be light on at first glance for superstars but full of real quality and quite deep, clubs who load up this year could be very happy. I’d be happy enough if we back ourselves in and trade next years first especially for edwards.

Never heard of him.

But do agree that the more I watch and more I like.

I think that from our pick at 13 to 30. There will be plenty of gold when we look back on this draft.

its looking like a pretty meh draft to be in unfortunately
feelin that :(

edwards looks good in flashes and on paper, but after watching his highlights again he plays like a 183 cm mid not 191, not much physicality to his game unfortunately. He might be able to develop that but normally that's an innate mindset thing. He is very flashy and good from stoppages, takes an ok mark too. Disposal is only so so though.

Hard to really make an assessment on these players without really seeing them live and watching a number of games. Does feel like a pretty weak draft. If anything I'd like us to try and trade out for the following year's draft if possible, but also Idk anything about nexts year's draft lol

I feel like a pick 20 in this draft is about a pick 30 in most drafts. But also I slept on Nas in his year and the kid is gonna have multiple AAs, so again what do I know

Edwards moved more onball in the back half of the year and looked really good.

This is partly what has us 😍😍🥰🥰 from my understanding

They Acknowledge he has a rawness. But think there is a huge untapped potential there.

From what I was told.

It’s fine to say next year’s draft will be better and we should hold our fire.

However when you’ve stuffed up numerous drafts and trade periods, and have only recently nailed a couple, there’s a natural tendency to want to get on with the job. We need to catch those clubs who haven’t stuffed things up.

2023 may prove to be weak and 2024 strong. Or it could end up the other way.

Regardless, let’s get some kids in now, get them into our system and get on with it.

It is a crap shoot. We are talking 18 y.o underdeveloped players.
When it is said a draft is strong or weak it means overall. Obviously doesn't mean every player is worse or better.

We only need our picks to be good . Easier said than done but the strongest draft in history can still be stuffed up.

West Coast is poised to strike the first live trade of draft night in a move that would deliver the Eagles a Harley Reid-Daniel Curtin dream quinella.

The Eagles have spent weeks fielding offers for their No.1 pick and rights to Reid, but instead of trading it out they are suddenly expected to not only secure Reid but also bring in Curtin with a second selection inside the top 10.

That would deliver the wooden-spooner the best player in the draft in Reid and also the best local player in Curtin.

But it is expected to come at a significant price, with West Coast having to trade out its future first-round pick to secure Curtin on Monday night.

Remarkably, Curtin could slide past Hawthorn (No.4) and Melbourne (No.6).

That would leave Curtin available for Greater Western Sydney at No.7, and that is where the Eagles are expected to make their move.

Should the Eagles offer up their future first-round pick for No.7 it would be a dilemma for the Giants, but ultimately an offer that rivals expect would be impossible to knock back.

The Giants would still hold a first-round pick (No.16) and trading for the Eagles’ future first could potentially deliver them the No.1 pick in next year’s draft.

They are not desperate for a key defender like Curtin, given they already have a brilliant backline led by All-Australian Sam Taylor.

Should the embattled Eagles again finish last next season it would mean that they have effectively traded away the No.1 pick in the 2024 draft for Curtin.

But GWS Giants would also consider whether the Eagles could bounce up the ladder next season with a fitter list and 12 games at Perth Stadium.

Curtin, a 197cm left-footer, is also highly-rated by the Hawks, who need key defenders, and the Demons, who are starting to plan for life after Steven May.

But recruiting sources believe the Hawks have zeroed in on Cyril Rioli-like small forward Nick ‘The Wizard’ Watson for their selection.

That would see Watson partner premiership Pie Jack Ginnivan in the Hawks’ forward line for the next decade.

Rivals suspect the Hawks would be nervous using their early pick on Curtin three years after taking another West Australian defender in Denver Grainger-Barrass with a prized pick with limited success so far.

The Demons have been dazzled by draft bolter Caleb Windsor, a blistering outside midfielder who kicks goals and would immediately help polish the club’s forward connection issues.

The Demons know they would have to pounce on Windsor at No.6 because GWS would otherwise secure him at pick seven.

Geelong like Nate Caddy at pick eight and Essendon is keen on defender Connor O’Sullivan at nine.

Update live draft order based on media

Westcoast: Reid
North: Mckercher
North: Duursma
Hawks: Watson
Dogs: Sanders
Dees: Windsor
Westcoast: curtain
Geelong: Caddy
Injectors: o’sullivan
Crows: Leake
Dees: Tholstrup
Swans: Green

Us….. Wilson

If the dons take O’Sullivan. Crows could take Wilson instead of Leake.

Which means none of the above would be available as you would imagine Leake goes to the swans at worst.

Which means we would have to trade back.

agree, definite upside, moves very nicely and a great size, disposal by foot is nice, by hands needs work. But more excited by him and collard (not including go home factor) than wilson

sure, but most years I feel the opposite, normally im super keen to trade away our future to satisfy my immediate draft desires

Get Collard then.
I reckon the small forward role is often one you can find as a bargain pick.

Charlie Cameron, Tom Papley, Liam Ryan, Tyson Stengle, Sonny Walters have all been in the last 5 all australian teams. Ryan is the highest pick of them at 27. Three of them were rookies.

we have been historically very good at keeping the homesickness away from the team once the kids come to St Kilda guys like Tony Brown do a fantastic job in ensuring they find their feet and feel comfortable away from home ..
With Jamie Cripps there were a number of contributing factors that triggered that request home
  • firstly the family connection to the WCE Jamie is the cousin of Chris Mainwaring he also grew up alongside Daniel Chick during his WCE stint so there was strong ties there
  • Secondly his medical condition he only found out about his diabetes 2 weeks before the draft so in one month as a 18 yearold he was suddenly faced with a move interstate and a lifechanging medical condition that required daily maintenance just to function was a big deal for him
  • Thirdly the year he requested a trade the Cripps family had a very close family friend pass away suddenly and unexpectedly - Jamie was already pretty keen to go home before that but that really ended any discussion of trying to convince him to stay
  • Lastly StK wasnt exactly a fun place to be at that point as lots of changes were happening and lots of players were not really happy
In other words .... he is a Mummy's Boy

Starting to get excited that we might actually be a chance to land Wilson. One of the few I'd be genuinely rapt with getting with our first.
and then if Edwards landed at our second pick…

im horny jack nicholson GIF

Shifter has him in his top 40, plays for the rebels and vic country. Anyway kids like Freijah are going to be very good pickups imo.

Anyone have the Ages phantom draft? Also what type of player is this Irish kid we have signed.. you would think they would say how tall he is in the saints article.

Marc McGowan (the age) just completed his early whispers mock.

Has us taking Darcy Wilson at 13
Ari Shoenmakers at 21

Crows take Edwards 2 selections after Wilson

St Kilda would almost certainly grab Wilson if he slides this far. Harry DeMattia, Edwards – managed by Saints list boss Stephen Silvagni’s son Tom – and defenders Arie Schoenmaker and Hardeman could also be in the mix.

Liam fancies himself on the half-back line according to the interview on Saints social media, 188cm tall.
