It's not just about this offseason though. If the priority is to bring in a big name KPP at some point (not saying it is), you'd be best preserving future flexibility – i.e. not giving a 5+ year deal on decent coin to a pretty dime-a-dozen midfielder who doesn't fill an area of need.
Petty, JVR are two handy starting key forwards for us.

Need to also take into account that we have Jefferson developing away at VFL similar to what Van Rooyen was last year.

After seeing the form of Petty up forward, I'm not entirely sure the club will go after a big name key forward.

I'm not saying we should – was more just responding to the question raised above regarding what KPPs are available.

Overall, I'd rather we preserve cap flexibility for future needs (i.e. re-signing young players, replacing May, targeting a skilful outside type etc), rather than blowing cap space on Parish.

The prospect of Petty playing permanent key forward is a huge boon because it means we may not have to go throwing dollars at a key forward after all. JVR & Petty with Jefferson in development phase is more than adequate. We also still have TMac & Brown contracted for another year.

I think sometimes too much is made of our midfield depth. Certainly the quality is there but as we’ve seen this year with Clarry it only takes one of them to go down before you’ve suddenly got Jordon, Harmes and ANB in the main rotation. And as someone else has pointed out - Viney is nearing 30yo with a decade of crash ‘n bash to his body.

I really like the idea of Parish not costing draft picks, meaning Jason Taylor can zero in on non-midfield areas of need with the first rounders we have this year.

Also, dismissing Parish as a ‘dime-a-dozen midfielder’ just isn’t on the mark. He’s much better than that. Former pick 5, All Australian 2021, having just as excellent a year stats wise this year playing in a dud team. He’d absolutely flourish in our side imo. Capable of being a consistent top 50 AFL player.

I agree, and I keep trying to make it clear that this was a hypothetical lol.

Ideally, we improve our midfield depth by trading up for one of Duursma or McKercher (or Reid) and developing them. Parish is in his prime – you know what you're going to get from him, and it's not really any more than you can expect from Oliver/Petracca/Viney/Brayshaw. There's a reason that Essendon fans are overall fairly ambivalent about the prospect of him leaving.

I'd rather keep the cap space for a May replacement next year, or a skilful outside player.

if getting Parish in means we don't have to play any of Jordon, Harmes, or Dunstan again, then i'm all for it. he's way better than those guys as a player, and we don't have much coming up underneath in the midfield either besides Woewodin.

We've got enough options to run through the middle already imo. Trac, Clarry and Viney are the main 3, Gus and Sparrow the next two who mostly play mid. Can throw Riv or Kozz in there, or even ANB, Chandler for a burst of something different.

Parish is better than JJ, Harmes etc, but those blokes have battled for games this year anyway. The team has moved on regardless.

I won't melt if we do wind up making a play for Parish, but I don't think he adds anything unique to our list or makes us better overall.

Please no. This guy is basically a Jy Simpkin clone. Spends more time flicking his hair back into place after a contest. I think the club also needs to be held a little bit to account for not taking Marcov who is now at the pies and has been a great acquisition for them. We need speed and he has it in abundance.

Nonetheless, Parish isn't the sort of player I rate.

Yeah I think those types of negative comments surface as supporters get frustrated at a player holding out on a contract. “He’s not that good anyway”, “butchers the ball”, etc etc.

Jeez Danster. You just found a glitch in the matrix. Our first disagreement!

Jordon played 17 games this year, Harmes 9, so i reckon we could do with one more good mid. and it's not like Sparrow is anything special either, i'd rather he be the one that's fighting for a spot in the team if they're all fit, and covering the injuries if they're not.

Agreed but what kpps are available in free agency?

If you can pick up Parish for nothing without overpaying you probably do it?

Can see Essendon matching our best offer though.
I wouldn't do it. Free Agents are appealing but we just don't need his type.

If there's literally nothing out there, then bank the money, front-end a few deals and go hard at geninune needs next year.

Lol why are we talking about Darcy Parish? He's a run of the mill 'good' midfielder who wants a 6 year deal on decent money. We already don't have enough room with Viney Oliver Trac Brayshaw to get Kosi and hopefully a top 5 midfielder this year into a regular centre square run.

Would be one of the worst recruiting decisions of all time if we got him.

Sadly you’d think list slots have become very apparent with the news. Melk and Dunstan likely done. That’s 2 of the required 3. If JJ goes that’s the minimum ticked.

We really need to look at mids.

Duursma is on some kind of hot streak right now. With finals spots on the line, he stepped up in a big way in this game to help his Power team to a significant victory over Eastern Ranges.

Love your work as always, but the Duursma and McKercher highlights make me sad now. Can't see how we'll come away with one of them, unless we pull off the GC trade (even so, would probably miss both if North get the compo pick).

I would think that someone similar to an Esava Ratugolea type, would suit us. One who was big, strong, and could help out forward, back, and in the ruck.
An all-rounder.

We should have done this last year, instead of the tall 2man ruck thingo. 2 specialists for one position didn't work.

I wouldn't count anything in or out personally. I have prospects from 2-10 on my list all being very even and in the same tier, with choices much more depending on list need early on.

FMD I don't check in for one day and people are trying to suggest we go for Parish...

Oh No Fire GIF

Out of interest, have you posted a mock yet? Or too early?

I haven't done a mock. I guess that's not really my thing, I'm mostly just a mug that makes prospect videos and has seen so much footage of these kids that I can't help but form an opinion. Not a talent evaluator though.

I will say, in my capacity as non-expert, that this top 10 is as strong as any I've seen in a long time. You should feel great about having a chance to pick from that group.
