Get Petty back fit, play JVR and then change the way we kick the ball instead of going for hail Mary list wrecking trades that have no hope of happening
I understand the point you're making, but 'list-wrecking' trades transformed our defence. I think there is definitely room for an elite KPF to be traded for, and with May getting older one like Naughten who could play either end of the ground (like Petty) fits the bill.

For the sake of the argument, let's say we get 22 (without bids) for Grundy, end of 3rd round for JJ (57 without bids), and a pick between 30-50 for Harmes and/or Spargo. We have genuine ammo for Gold Coast's pick 4, in terms of points.

I think we would have enough to take a player with that pick, and still tempt the Dogs to part with Naughten by including our Future 1st. It would be a great outcome and not saying it will happen, but I would love it to.
What you need to know is how many draft picks Gold Coast are going to use. Because unused draft don’t count for points when matching a bid and puts you into negative for the following year.

So they would be more interested in picks for the following year once they match for their three academy players

May only cost pick 5, hardly list wrecking trade, lever also cost two first rounders but we worked our way back into the draft.

They didn't though. We had 0 key defenders and already a stacked midfield. Then we invested a couple first rounders for May and Lever.

We already invested two first rounders into JVR and Jefferson, dumping another 2 on Naughton not only makes one of them useless but means we haven't taken a midfielder for about 5 years. That's list wrecking.

Yeah we slid the second first rounder back to like 21 or something so only lost 8 spots.

Fair call. You've explained that well.

I guess my concern is that Jefferson is no guarantee to be any good, and if our window remains even slightly open now, he's unlikely to feature in a key role in 2024. If one of Petty/JVR/Fritsch goes down, we're still looking at Schache/BBB/Tmac having to come in, or a raw Jefferson.

Hindsight of course, but Josh Weddle went three picks after Jefferson last year. Would have been pretty perfect for what we need in terms of line-breaking and good disposal, and we wouldn't need to feel hesitant about pouring more picks into sorting out our key forwards. Still, picks after the top-10 are always a bit of a lottery.

Man I know I watch less footy than ever but who the **** is Josh Weddle 😂

Played the last 17 games for Hawthorn this year off a wing/half-back and looked really promising

Jefferson easily could be shit, but I don't think we can afford to keep using first rounders on key forwards when our midfield is worryingly thin and we have no key defenders outside of May. If we don't draft well in the next 2 years we are gonna be in alot of trouble way sooner than people realize.

Guessing he's a silky kicking bloke with agility then. Crazy how good the hawks drafting is
He’s a bit like Sam Frost/Jayden Hunt if you insert skills and a brain. Thrilling runs that break up a zone and then uses it well.

I am not surprised our football department missed him. There's a tendency for them to get fixated on certain players and never take the blinkers off, like how they got with Grundy.

This is the same mob that thought Bedford wasn't AFL standard last year.

I was probably a bit harsh on the Jefferson pick at the time, definitely has potential and might be a really good pick up, but will take a long time to find out.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if he is selected in the early part of next year i.e. Rnds 2-6 just to see what he's capable of in the seniors.

we have been trying to change the way we kick since 2017. We need a quality forward. We had more success i 2018 with jesse hogan

I don't think the club thought Bedford wasn't afl standard, they didn't want to lose him. He definitely showed glimpses and made a great sub but his full games probably wasn't doing enough.
Melbourne offered Bedford a contact. GWS guaranteed Bedford playing time and that’s why Melbourne lost him.

If Bedford stayed he still would’ve been fighting it out in the musical chairs game with Chandler, Spargo and later Laurie and Woewodin.

What gives you the impression that they thought he would make a great sub?

He was our sub 8 times last year and only got activated twice.

LMFAO

The coaching group didn't rate him if they couldn't assure him playing time in 2023.

I am really happy for Bedford. I am glad he found a role as a major contributor in a top 4 side. It's gotta be better than playing reserves for a team that loses in straight sets in successive years!

Him being a great sub is my opinion.

That is solved by a depth KPF though not a star (Our current ones suck). Petty/JVR/Fritsch is actually a really promising combination, not many clubs have a quality KPF to walk into the team should one of their starters go down.

I really do question why they resigned Schache if they aren't paying out Brown or Tmac.
