Well, that is a bold statement mate. Considering our trading has largely covered our perceived greatest need and the draft appears to be lacking pacy mids or KPD’s around our pick range.

Deadset, if we get two players who become best 22 out of this rather strange draft, our recruiters are geniuses. I have more confidence that one or both of the Irish make it than I do if getting two “gems” in the draft.
Me too. If the 'draft rankings' they release every so often turn out to be a true reflection of where they'll go in the draft then clubs seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to players who would have once been considered a 'gettable' smokey. I hope we didn't make a mistake trading down our first. :(

How would you know it was a mistake if we decided to trade down our first rounder until you saw whether the player/s that we used it on were any good?

You wouldn't, but it's low hanging fruit for anyone who wants to frame a "the club messed up because they didn't take the player I like" discussion.

Similar to the "trading down was unnecessary, could have got a second rounder alone for Fisher", even though the people making that argument weren't at the negotiating table, nor do they have the slightest clue which players the club are targeting in the draft. But starting that dialogue early gives them a long run up when they player they like the most goes somewhere between our original pick and our new pick....even if the club would have had no intention of drafting said player at either pick.

KPP are thin on the ground in both drafts. We need next gen key defender soon. Could be hard to find.
There will still be options I think. You have kids such as Charlie Edwards & Tew Jiath forcing their way into the Top 25, which means some have to slide somewhat.
  • Ollie Murphy will slide a little, but it's doubtful he falls enough to get to us.
  • Taylor Goad is an interesting prospect with potential to play either end as well as ruck. He's not been playing footy in a serious manner long enough that he'd be fixed in any one position. Very quick by any standard let alone for someone 206cm. Footy is still very raw where he's a couple of years behind Ethan Read regarding development.
  • Wil Dawson is another I like a little further back in the draft. Excellent in the air and has decent speed. No where near as developed as say Connor O'Sullivan, but he's that style of player. Doesn't have O'Sullivan's production levels or consistency yet, which is why he's projected to be a late pick. Has all the tools at his disposal though.
  • The other one I like around our picks is Will Green, but do we really another ruck??? I'll be honest, I can't see Mirkov getting to AFL level as there are just too many holes in his game. The heart issue doesn't necessarily help either.
I don't have an overwhelming preference here, but I would like for Austin to get at least one tall with our picks. Given the Camporeale kids next year and that we took Hollands, Cowan & Binns last year it does make sense to get a tall or two this draft.

With links to Lual and Roberts would be pretty surprised if at least one of our picks doesn't get used on a half back. Links are pretty strong there.

Lual the higher ceiling, Roberts the higher floor
Hopefully, as our 2nd pick

And, Lual out of the two for me

You wouldn't, but whether it proves a mistake or not only gets obfuscated to bu**ery anyway, after the fact, whenever 'said' player still manages senior games and to stay on the list for a serviceable amount of time. The logic is almost never 'who we could have had', it's always 'he goes/went alright'. You might not be able to criticise the results yet, but you can certainly criticise the reasoning. If you are going to trade down the draft order 'before' the day then there has to be a certain logic to it. You don't get a refund or a chance to pick again.

Just for future reference..Please confirm that you preferred to keep pick 17 and take 40 from North or pick 22 and 26 as we ended up doing.

Hadn't seen that. 1st time I'd noticed.
Was early on, I’d actually forgotten about it with others being mentioned.

Really NFI but we were linked with Ollie in 2022 but a 1st rounder is easier to gauge by picking off the players ahead vs +25 spots back.

2021: Was Motlop a given?
2020: Durd’s had been linked IIRC & small forwards. Carroll a slider.

You can't trade up or down any more till draft night. So it's now impossible to trade "before" the day.

Once again it just appears that you are getting your ducks in a row to criticise any decisions that are made.
