We are going to have to go back to the draft in a major way this year.
I find this laughable
1) Aside from a first rounder, we have trade out of the top end of the upcoming draft.

2) we have a very talented list with both mature and developing players.

3) Something is clearly wrong with eithe the coaching group or the playing group or both.
unless we address whatever the hell it is destroying for the group from within, I would hate to be an 18 year old heading to Carlton.

I have been out all day and haven’t looked at the board until now and this post was the last thing on my I Pad last night.
I shudder to think what I am about to encounter when catching up with other threads.

So be interesting to know your strategy then, as it has become apparent our list is not as good as most of us had thought.

Going back to the draft seems the right direction despite your commentary.
We are not going to be a finals side this year again.

We have been ordinary at best since mid last season so based on performances and not perceived talent we are consistently found wanting 4 wins from our last 12 last year & 4.5 from 9 which is likely to become 4.5 from 12, this year we have a significant amount of dead wood on our list which will need a refresh regardless of what occurs with coaching etc

3 picks inside the top 30 and 1-2 Acres/Hewett/Young recruits would go a long way in changing how our list is set up. Said it many times but TDK out for a late first would imo be much more beneficial for the balance of the list if we could spend it on a run and carry player with good skills.

Watson, Mckercher and Wilson would be my pick of 3 that would be instant impact players for us.

If we had a top 10 pick and two top 20 picks from trading TDK and a F1 they could all be well within reach with a bit of manoeuvring.
  • Watson the freakshow small forward, can play middle and half back at an elite level too.
  • Wilson a very Jack Crisp-like powerful and explosive runner with decent skills on both feet and a good overhead mark.
  • Mckercher a tough but smaller inside mid, atm a bit one sided on his left but very similar to Zac Merrett type distributor with a bit more speed and burst out of stoppage.

However, Moir and Duursma have both put in verrrryyy ordinary performances this year especially in the Academy vs VFL games. Moir I've been less than impressed with, seems a bit of a showboat and quite soft in the contest which has been disappointing. Duursma still shows immense potential with his speed and kicking skills but seems to fade in and out a lot. I'd be keeping a close eye on both with their player traits very high on our list of needs.

1; Is it laughable because we've ostensibly 'been there, done that' without the required results? Who's fault is it that we traded out of this years draft given that this is supposed to be a strong strong crop of players? It's about time that we took ownership of our decisions and strive to do better next time rather than just drop the bundle.

2; Yes, but one that is heavily weighted towards mid-sized to smallish players who lack explosiveness and/or toughness.

3. We've been through that before, too, and no magical clicking of the fingers has changed anything. If there's something wrong with the playing group then perhaps that tells you something about its constitute parts. Maybe, just maybe, Carlton's problems are many and interrelated. I'd say part of what ails us is creating a mindset in which we are making 'feel good' decisions rather than the ones that are needed to be made.

A mid with genuine breakaway pace who can run further than 1km in game (unlike poor Dowey) and a small forward with electric speed please.

Mckercher/Wilson/Duursma and Watson are the names you're looking for. Unfortunately we will well and truly be having to sell the farm to get two of them in a single draft.

2023, 2024 picks, TDK, probably Kennedy, Gov and Fisher too.

I'd do it if I was in charge but alas, I'm not.

I'd also love to target Florent and Ainsworth still as mature age players who can bring some pace and class.

Would love for us to snag Nick "the wizard" Watson. Projected top 10 pick and is an absolute pocket rocket. Forward/Midfielder who is only slightly taller than Caleb Daniel and can play off half back also.

SA vs Vic Metro half time report

Couple of notes -
Philactides probably the best game I've seen him play. Laser like left foot and providing huge run from the backline.
Watson has 3 in the half vs SA, is a mix of Papley and Ginnivan, will infuriate opposition supporters throughout his career with some of his antics and ducking. Can also roost the ball about 60m on set shots though and his athleticism is simply unmatched in this draft. 170cm or not he's a game winner.
Jordan Croft, a Dogs F/S KPF looks an absolute handful at this level. Reckon he'll go top 10-15 which adds intrigue to the Dogs abundant tall stocks.
Ashton Moir, looks bloody dreadful compared to last year. Taken himself from a certain top 5 pick to arguable that he'd even go top 20. Just seems to have no ticker to him and completely conditional when up against fiercer competition.
Patton, still really like him but hasn't been as influential with his disposals as I'd like. Normally uses it well but seems lacking the dare he needs to be elite.
Ashcroft jnr - Bris have another top 5 mid F/S coming through

Won’t be surprised if Moir is “playing possum” to stay in SA.
Scary watching Ashcroft and Croft, free hits for clubs already loaded in their positions. Albeit Ashcroft next year.

Watson a talent but one everyone will love to hate.

Some good ruck prospects putting up their hands. Was watching Visentini early, but big bodied Van Wyck for SA looks a cross between Witts and Darcy. A solid physical presence who appears to have sufficient endurance already to impact early and skill that belies his hulking frame.

Roberts, Smith and Brown with cameos from Lorenz are impressive. I have no reason to rethink Philactides as my favourite in the draft, classic modern HBF with Saad traits. Supreme athlete, well built and scope to play up the ground if required.

Allies made a mess of SA last game, so fair to say they are quite weak.

I can't see Moir doing that, he's playing that bad that he'd be putting SA clubs off him  Philactides looking the goods for sure. Kicks well short and long.

Jed Walter looks like a 30 year old man.
Gold Coast 1st could be up for grabs as a bid will come early.
They have three first round bids in waiting. A lot would have to change for us to get near their first. They will need points and we have no second or third rounder as it sits.

It’s funny with these SA guys, I was told the same about Keeler last year only for Adelaide to sever ties with him and the Saints to pick him up. Reckon Moir needs a good team around him and relies on lots of quality supply.

You’re right about Philactides, won’t go top ten due to his position but that speed and dare off half back is gonna go very well for him in the AFL and he’s really producing at the moment.

Sanders for the Allies looks a great prospect as a mid, where’s he projected to go?

Allies just made a mess of WA, some very very good talent in the Allies team.

I hope Sanders isn’t tied to an academy

McKercher was brilliant, I’d be hesitant having another Taswegian on the list with them coming into the comp though

Sanders is a Tassie boy too TYB…

Mckercher best fit of the mids for us if we went down that path. Ball use and speed is elite.

Watson Duursma and Wilson the forward half xfactor types we'd be looking at, imo in that order.

Sanders probably goes 10-20, generally gets a heap of it but his ball use isn't the greatest in terms of impact per disposal.

Walter starting to shape up as a top 3 pick imo, Read and Rogers look top 20 picks too.

Reckon the Eagles would be nuts not having a crack at splitting their pick to pick up Curtin who held Walter pretty well today despite being far less physically developed. Great ball user too.

Love me a leftie, but aside from Tassie questions, McKercher is totally one sided and may get found out at the next level. Certainly an option though.

Watson, Duursma, Wilson in the mix all have pros and cons. Warming a but to Watson, a little prick, but would be nice to be our little prick. Bit of little man syndrome has made him hard as nails, so plenty of positives.

No knock on Sanders. Skills very rounded, no outstanding traits, but does everything well. High volume mid who could easily play on a flank at either end or a wing.

Walter will cost them big time. Bit of a gamble transforming to top level against quality defenders.

Mckercher would be pushing for pick 1 if he was dual sided, but I agree it does hamper him on occasion and those things get found out more at AFL level.

I missed a lot of last seasons games with Duursma so I haven't seen him play purely as a forward which is where he's renowned to be most impactful but for the time being I think Watson is a better player.

Wilson probably my favourite player from the draft for us in general, he plays with aggression and boldness. Certainly not the type who will leave anything on the field but he can be a bit sloppier than others. To me he's very much reminiscent of Jack Crisp only he can kick both sides of his body.
