Not trying to be a pedant, but we never "versed"" them, there's no such word. We played them..........

Apparently it’s so common now that they had to put it in the dictionary. They use it in gambling ads even. Does my head in.

My god we overrate our guns so blindly here lol.

Both players are good, but they are new. They haven't battled personal form drops, oppo attention, media pressure, injury comebacks, etc

Get back to us in 4 years.

Reminds me of a couple of years ago when loads on this board talked about Jack Steele as a top 3 midfielder. I get why Saints fans are talking up Saints players but there seems a distinct lack of perspective sometimes

Owens in the running for the Rising Star. Is he overrated by those who think he's a serious chance?
I'd say that Nasiah would be a better chance if he hadn't played 17 games last year, putting him out of contention this year.

He gets the 4th most disposals on the team, and unlike Steele and Crouch, they are very good disposals. He's just a touch behind Jack Sinclair in the role he's playing.

Owens is amongst the highest contested possessions in the team, despite not playing pure mid.
He's had a 19 contested possession game. Most AFL footballers will never have a 19 contested possession game. I'm backing that its not a fluke.

They really aren't well versed in the English language.

The one i hate is " Need to improve he's kicking skills ".

Yes, yes, yes! Be pedantic by all means.
My pet hate.

Some of those dictionaries will take any cheap word just to stay popular.

Daniel Hoyne on SEN Sportsday with Kane and Gerard Healy

Since round 8: Gresh is the 302nd rated player in the comp 😆

Case of buyer beware… shocking ball use where Gresh has the 5th least impact with ball in hand.

We’re not adding anything keeping him in the team

The stats dont lie, people like myself have been suggesting that for sometime. Others raise his form prior to his injuries, but even then he was a poor decision maker and well below average by foot. The big positive with Gresham when in form, is he kicks pressure goals and stands up at different times in games to help drag the team over the line. A club like others would be buying on potential, more so than runs on the board.

My test for our players is what top 4 side would he get a game with and make them a better side? Collingwood have shown interest in him so perhaps they believe he does, but I doubt even they would be offering big $$$ after their past TPP issues. That said if he wants big $$$ in his next contract it looks like he is out the door, otherwise he takes the Saints offer and we all move on. Personally I think its a fait accompli...

Getting sufficient draft or trade capital will be SOS's next big move, if he wants to bring in 3 or so best 23 players via trade or FA. If we can convince Ned Flanders to head down to us, I wonder if Billings could some how be offered to GCS in that trade. They might be even interested in Gresham or Clark? The GCS will be looking to add to their stocks if Flanders, Hollands & Sharp depart at years end. I really hope we can land one of Flanders or Hollands, that would make our midfield a lot more competitive next season.

They also issued a buyer beware on Ben McKay.
( Not so good at the actual defense, kind of the opposite of Howard ).

I mean, IIRC, across the 2020 and 2021 seasons Steele collected the equal most amount of Brownlow vote out of any player in the competition.

He was at his peak a top 5 player, and we were hardly even in contention.

Wasn’t uncommon for neutral fans and media to say the best handful of mids were Bontempilli, Petracca, Neale, Steele and Cripps/Walsh. 🤷🏽‍♂️

s**t changes of course, but Nas is a well respected player already, all it takes is for him to have a big performance in a big game (Friday night or a final or something) and he’ll be a name. Heard a lot of Melbourne supporters singing his praises after we versed them a few rounds back.

As for Owens, I actually think the hype on him is frankly lower than I expected given he’s a genuine change to win the rising star this year. That sort of thing would’ve made us feral I’d have thought, Max only came 3rd in that award.

Above all else tho, most of these awards and stuff are pretty worthless, I agree that the real making of these players will be their consistency of quality performance over the many years they hopefully remain Saints.

I'm not sure anyone ever linked his name along side Bont an Petracca. Steele was a super consistent mid which is why he was so high in Brownlow votes. Same as Wines. Consistent high possession getters win the award over brilliant match winners. I always find that it's easier to rack up big possession counts in midfields with less competition for touches too. Seb Ross was a big possession getter when Stuv was the only other Saint to pick his pocket.

Steele is a very good two-way runner and rarely has bad games but he doesn't have that next gear to go to that the real champion elite players have.

Owens consistency has dropped right away since he came back from injury. All year his contested ball winning has been his elite trait but surely Sheezel wins it now, he's not just going well for a rising star, he's going well for an AFL footballer. He averages more touches than Josh Daicos and has owned his spot from game one. Rarely makes a bad decision either.

Gresham looked great for the first half of last year. Playing out of the centre even. For what ever reason he doesn't work well under Lyon. He is an instinct player and the confined roles seem to make him into a shit player in every way. I just hope we get decent compo for him. The way he's playing this year looks like he'd struggle to play VFL.

Versus sounds phonetically similar to verses which seems to have thrown people. I guess if you played against someone you "versed" them in past tense. Maybe there is logic but it grates on me for some reason.

I can't stand it when people post of social media after someone passes away & they finish with;

RIP!

Now it's "vale" on everything. RIP looks like it's from a tombstone in a cartoon but when did Aussies decide that they even knew that latin was a language? Making perfectly good death in to a wank is un-Australian.

Ashcroft & Owens are both ahead of Sheezel IMO.

He racks up so many easy kicks off half back that his disposal numbers are grossly inflated (especially the old 1-2 handball receive).

His season is on a par with Nas's current season (18 games v 35) & Nas isn't spoken about in the same stratosphere.

What Ashcroft & Owens have done in much more difficult & contested roles has Harry covered.

He'll win now because the media love stats & 26 possies a game for a rookie is impressive.

Nas played most of last season and it took until the second half of this year to hit his straps. Harry has broken 30 possessions 6 time in his first 8 games including 34 in round 1. He's had 2 games under 21 possessions for the year. He has good contested possession numbers, excellent disposal etc.

If he was playing at Collingwood instead of a shit side no-one watches he'd be getting Daicos hype. I guess it comes down to how much they rate being in the best 3 players every week in a shit side to being the 4th wheel mid in a good side or the hybrid KPF in an in-between side.

Reckon you haven't seen many of Sheezel's games if you think a lot of his touches are cheap handball receives. His picks off long accurate kicks and hits them.

I know I'm fighting a losing battle and will die alone on this small sized hill, but the way commentators pronounce "dour" does my head in.
Rhymes with "tour" FFS.

F*** you all with your bogan variant pronunciations.

I know you are a fan but his kicking has always been pretty ordinary for a small midfielder. RTB has given him plenty of chances to find form, he just has no tank and the required two way running has exposed him.

I have never known definitively which it is. Some pretty learned people say it as "Dower" including myself who I believe to be the most learned of them all. I reckon we'd be half a dozen Asahis down and be fist fighting about it.
