GWS tend to make a call late on who they will take, but rival clubs are finding it difficult to get a read on them. Would they take Dan Curtin if he slides that far, considering their strong key defensive stocks? They have shown interest in hulking forward Nate Caddy, and he certainly would add some extra excitement to their forward mix. As would Tasmanian swingman James Leake, who like Caddy has plenty of power and can also be used down back. Flashy wingman Caleb Windsor could also be the mix at their first choice. The Giants have shown strong interest in speedy utility Harry DeMattia and Sandringham Dragons bolter Charlie Edwards, and both are in contention for their second selection. They have also been linked to Western Bulldogs academy defender Luamon Lual – would pick 16 be too early? We know the Giants haven’t been afraid to pull a surprise before. Koltyn Tholstrup is one who can give their forward 50 some spark, but he could be off the board by then. Giants Academy product Harvey Thomas may receive a bid later in the draft, with Fremantle understood to be a possible threat. The Giants also have access to rangy key forward Charlie McCormack, who they could add as a Category B rookie if he doesn’t receive a bid.

Think you just take Curtin if he's there and figure everything else out later unless the go home factor is a real issue with him, don't think I've seen anything to suggest it will be. Would try him up forward first to try and pair with Cadman long term as a tall marking target that could compliment his skill set really well.

I agree if Curtin is there, you'd take him as "best available". Forward was his least successful role at U18, but yeah, I'd happily give him a run and see what he could do up front. Possibly not a major goalkicker ... but then again, neither is Keeffe.

We could also try him on a wing, to make use of his height and kicking ability. That's probably the position that is most open to someone coming in and taking an opportunity.

Similar to if we got O'Sullivan, there's not really a spot available in defence unless there are injuries, and he seems not really a "pure KPD" but more of a Lizard-type player (who can absolutely crack a game open!), but I would think we wouldn't want to put him through a lengthy VFL apprenticeship for a role in defence.

Where is Cal Twomey's phantom.

He normally has very good intel.

Perhaps the clubs have played their hand closer to their chest than normal

Cal is often very late with his Phantom as he wrings every scrap of intel from the clubs, but ... yeah, don't mind if he actually isn't in the know for once!

Sometimes he'll throw up early drafts, but often he only locks it in the day before.

If the WC F1 is on the table for 7 then I probably do that, that's pretty much locked in to be a top 3 pick next year because they're going to be terrible again I imagine especially if they're more focused on playing on younger players. Might be some other stuff included with 7 but if that's the crux of the deal I don't think I'd pass that up.

From the Age

The other option at this pick is the Demons drafting highly rated Eastern Ranges winger Caleb Windsor, who would also be strongly considered at the next selection, which the Giants own.

However, there is also a big watch on GWS, who are another possible suitor for the Eagles’ 2024 first-rounder, assuming Melbourne pass on Curtin. The Giants may also weigh up taking Curtin, although they are most commonly linked to Tasmanian James Leake and Caddy. O’Sullivan or Darcy Wilson are other possibilities.

There is also a chance GWS and Adelaide switch their first picks, given Leake is likely to still be up for grabs at the Crows’ selection.

GWS also like DeMattia, Edwards and Hawthorn’s Next Generation Academy prospect Tew Jiath, who they have spoken to a few times.

END OF ARTICLE CLIP

If Curtin is on the board you can't just let him keep falling imo either take him as best available or trade the pick and move back/out for good value, taking Leake at 8 over Caddy and Curtin just feels like you're misvaluing your pick and not taking full advantage of it.

If Curtin is there and we don't want him we have to trade. I don't think we need to give up much more than 7 as we are essentially trading the player not the pick...if they rate him as a top 3 pick them they are just getting ahead of schedule.
Love it.

For sure, wouldn't be adding much more than a F3 or a middling to late pick

So, basically they're saying ... they think GWS could take any of half a dozen players who will be available at our pick, or trade back a couple, or trade into next year.

They've literally thrown 20 darts at the dart board and whichever proves to have landed they'll exclaim "we hit it".
It could be we trade with say essendon,
7,2024r2 for 9,2024r1.
Or West Coast,
7,2024r2,2024r3 for 2024r1,23.

Remarkably, Curtin could slide past Hawthorn (No.4) and Melbourne (No.6). That would leave Curtin available for Greater Western Sydney at No.7, and that is where the Eagles are expected to make their move.

Should the Eagles offer up their future first-round pick for No.7 it would be a dilemma for the Giants, but ultimately an offer that rivals expect would be impossible to knock back.

The Giants would still hold a first-round pick (No.16) and trading for the Eagles’ future first could potentially deliver them the No.1 pick in next year’s draft. They are not desperate for a key defender like Curtin, given they already have a brilliant backline led by All-Australian Sam Taylor. Should the embattled Eagles again finish last next season it would mean that they have effectively traded away the No.1 pick in the 2024 draft for Curtin.

But GWS Giants would also consider whether the Eagles could bounce up the ladder next season with a fitter list and 12 games at Perth Stadium.

Curtin, a 197cm left-footer, is also highly-rated by the Hawks, who need key defenders, and the Demons, who are starting to plan for life after Steven May. But recruiting sources believe the Hawks have zeroed in on Cyril Rioli-like small forward Nick ‘The Wizard’ Watson for their selection. The Demons have been dazzled by draft bolter Caleb Windsor, a blistering outside midfielder who kicks goals and would immediately help polish the club’s forward connection issues. The Demons know they would have to pounce on Windsor at No.6 because GWS would otherwise secure him at pick seven. Geelong like Nate Caddy at pick eight and Essendon is keen on defender Connor O’Sullivan at nine.

Hopefully someone falls through to 16 and we still land someone quality but if West Coast F1 is on the table then I think you do that. Tholstrup wouldn't be surprising at 16 if he's still there been linked to him quite a bit, has all the traits of the match winning forward half players that can go through that midfield that everyone is looking for. De Mattia also would make sense since we've been linked to him a bit but he has heaps of speed, damaging kicker, think it works in his favour that he's played numerous positions as a junior shows his versatility but also means there's meat on the bone once he locks down one.

West Coast will be much better next year. In saying that, I don’t mind it. With the age of our list, by the time next years recruits mature, there will be legitimate spots available.
