We definitely do not need Oliver. He would detract from Tom Green. It would unbalance our midfield.
Not good for our context.
I really think we only try to get Oliver if someone like Cognilio or Kelly told us they wanted back to Melbourne. If this was Bontompelli or Petracca a very different story due to their quality as a forward.

Maybe we can become involved in some 3 way trade involving our pick 6, but we should demand substantial overs for it.
Maybe 6,2024r2 for Norths 2024r1,r2 as an example ( but even then neither us or North probably want that trade).

While Clayton Oliver is obviously a quality player, you don't improve your team by trading out 2 top-line junior players for a mid-career gun. You work out how to add him to the roster outright, like Lions did in adding Dunkley to their mix (as well as landing a gun draftee in Will Ashcroft).

Sorry for intruding, please tell me Matt Flynn ain't half bad :)

He was 8th in hitouts per game, 7th in hitouts to advantage for rucks.

Just a touch above Bailey Williams' stats for centre clearances & much better in hitout win%.

He can take a solid clunk when playing forward, and for a ruckman is actually a reasonable kick.

The downside is that he's not as great a mover as is Kieren Briggs, who replaced him as GWS ruck, and slightly less dynamic. I can't say I watched too many 2023 Eagles games, so I cannot give a comparison with Bailey Williams, unfortunately.

He'll probably battle with Williams for the top spot wouldn't think he's clearly the better option compared to Williams. In theory he can go forward but it's yet to really translate out of a few flashes here and there, you're getting what you pay for with Flynn and you won't be paying a whole lot for him in an ideal world he's probably a solid enough depth back up ruck.

Has anyone's view changed on the draft?
6 &15
Where do we think McCormack goes?
No, I don't really think so.

Sanders being retained in the general draft pool is good for us. It leaves #6 - even if/when pushed back by McKay FA compo to NM - within the top 8 (non-academy) pool.

I'd be happy to do one of several options, noting how other clubs choose obviously impacts our specific selections:
  • #6 gets us one of Watson (fast, goalkicker), Sanders (clearance mid), O'Sullivan (developing KPD) or Caddy (medium/tall forward)
  • #15 gets a complementary player, such as a KPD (Ollie Murphy), speedy mid (Wilson, De Mattia); or could be used to trade into 2024.
The only thing I'd prefer not to do is trade #6 into 2024. This year we have a shot at a top line draft prospect (nothing's guaranteed of course!). None of the teams likely to finish bottom 4-6 next year are likely to trade, so we're turning a certain good pick into a lottery pick if we trade to a mid-table team. IMHO it would be better to take #6 to this year's draft and if we get what we want, use #15 as a lure with a mid-ranked team whom we think might drop into bottom 10 calculation.

Charlie McCormack I can see going undrafted at ND. We've opened up a Cat B Rookie list spot. I presume that we have in mind one of he or Harvey Thomas for that spot - I'd take a flying guess that it's likely to be McCormack.

Huh...I didn't realise McCormack was rated so low. Good to know.

I agree with you re pick 6 and 15.
Unless we can bring in a classy player that helps a tilt at a flag let's just keep bringing through first rounders consistently.
Watson feels like a great choice. Any draftee would be coming into a young winning situation which is ideal. I'd be stoked with Sanders and Caddy too. Kinda can't miss at 6.

The Clayton Oliver news really sets the cat amongst the pigeons in terms of trade period ... and potential spill into draft.

I can imagine Melbourne demanding a really high price (and Shane McAdam will cut little off their demands), so say pick #9 and Crows' future first, maybe even something else.

That would then leave them with #5, 9, 13, 25, 33, plus from 2024 their own and likely Crows' first round picks. Maybe a swap with Norths initially for #3, say #5 & #13 (maybe a smaller pick too), and then up-trade #3 & #9 for #1 (that may need something else, Crows' future first perhaps?).

Melbourne #1 gets Harley Reid; Norths take McKercher or maybe Duursma; West Coast then have options from McKercher/Duursma, Sanders or Curtin - whoever they think best helps their team. The #9 then also gets them a second decent player (although just outside the "top 8"), but someone like Darcy Wilson, maybe Nate Caddy drops to there, or Ollie Murphy if they don't get Curtin earlier. Plus their #20 and 2 x 30s picks can get them some decent home-grown talent (Hardeman, Tholstrup, Hall, Zakostelsky).

Why not? Only a rookie list spot so no big deal if it doesn't work out, when he's healthy he's shown he can be a goal kicker which is exactly what we need. Likely going to be injured again but on the off chance he's not and he gets through 15+ games he could be 30+ goals for us if injuries haven't zapped him of what he had his first year at port. Type of moves we need to be making as a non destination club competitng for a flag, take chances like this and the payoff is big but the fallout not so much if it doesn't work out for us.

A Lloyd like role I’m guessing …. Actually stats wise seems an upgrade when he is on the park

He's shown that whenever he's played he's kicked goals, kicked 39 from 20 in 2017, in 2021 kicked 28 from 15 games. He's an awesome kick so can probably move him up the field a bit so we can have him delivering i50 but most of his damage will be done i50 to kick goals.

Played 9 SANFL games, averaged 2.2 goals (4 goals x3 times, 3 goals x1, 2 goals x2) and 3.8 tackles. Fits the mould of player we are trying to get and creative inside forward 50. Dont hate the idea like everyone else, but as with all our small forwards, the issue will be soft tissue injuries and trying to keep him on the park.

Probably also means we think Watson is going to be gone by our pick/flight risk and we go tall with our first pick on O'Sullivan (Caddy less likely I would've thought). Only exception is if Sanders is still on the board.

I think either way we wouldn't expect the Wizard to be starting 22 in round 1. Although he is pretty ready made.

I still think Caddy or Sanders. But I just rate them more.

My thought is if we draft the Wizard, he will be playing round 1 deep in the forward pocket with Snooze. Basically freeing up Stormy to roam into the midfield more often.

Caddy is talented, but for me it's just the number of developing key forwards we have on our list vs key backs. The VFL forward line would probably have some combination of Cadman, Gruzewski, Derksen and Elliot Himmelberg there throughout the year. Preuss, Madden +/- Teakle if we end up picking him up all more genuine rucks who could fill gaps but defence is a more technical position which I find harder to fill than a cherry picking ruck resting forward. With only Aleer +/- Haynes down back, neither of whom I would class as a full back, just feel we need to have someone developing there even despite us being stacked in defence in our first 22. If heaven forbid Taylor gets offered a monster contract by a VIC club in a few yrs time, we should have someone who has been in our system ready to step up without breaking our defensive structure.

If Sanders is there though, I agree we take him. We need another bull in the middle to complement Green with Ward getting close to retirement and Cogs turning 30 later this yr.

I wonder if we could move back in a live trade to get O' Sullivan. Depends on who Geelong, essendon want .
It will be probably be very hard for O 'Sullivan to make the team in 2024,25.
