GIANTS YOUNGSTER CLOSE TO DEAL

GREATER Western Sydney youngster Joe Fonti is set to be rewarded for an eye-catching start to his AFL career, with the athletic West Australian closing on a fresh two-year deal.

The contract extension is set to take Fonti through until 2027, given he already has one season remaining on the initial two-year draftee contract he received when he was recruited to the club with pick No.44 last year.

Fonti, a high-flying 189cm defender, earned a surprise AFL debut against Carlton earlier this season and ultimately broke through for five senior appearances in his maiden campaign at the Giants.

Fonti's imminent re-signing comes as the club waits on decisions from free agent duo Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming, with both receiving significant offers from rival clubs throughout the year.

Perryman is being hunted by Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, but has a six-year deal to stay at the Giants, while Cumming is weighing interest from Port Adelaide and Adelaide but has been offered a four-year extension to stay.

"We're confident we've put our best foot forward and given it our best shot to keep them," Giants recruiting boss Adrian Caruso told AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable on Wednesday.

"Part of the industry is free agency, so we understand it's their right to explore the market and see what they can get. I think we've made it pretty clear to them that they're valued parts of our football club and they're important players heading into a very important finals series.

"It's this deep in the year, they're still gathering all of their information and they've got big decisions to make. We understand that. But, from our point of view, we obviously want to keep them and hopefully that's the way it ends up." – Riley Beveridge

Yeah, Caruso didn't sound confident at all about keeping them. Essentially, "we've put as good an offer as we can, and it's up to them now".
he didnt sound defeated either.
I reckon the players are genuinely undecided at this point.

Ward has re-signed for another year. :)

Giants veteran signs on to extend career into an 18th season

Callan Ward has turned down rival interest and signed a one-year contract extension with the Giants

CALLAN Ward will continue his career into an 18th season next year after signing a contract extension at Greater Western Sydney this week.

Ward had been weighing up a number of options through the back half of the season, including retirement and a move back to Victoria, but he has opted to remain at the Giants and will play on into 2025.

The 34-year-old has been rejuvenated by a mid-season positional change to the wing under coach Adam Kingsley, which is understood to have played a significant part in his decision to stay at the Giants for another season.

Ward's form and on-field leadership had led to Victorian interest, with North Melbourne among a number of clubs understood to have been keen to lure the veteran for next season, but he will remain at the Giants for his 14th year at the club.

Ward told AFL.com.au earlier this year that he had been contemplating retirement at season's end, but that Kingsley's arrival at the club ahead of the 2023 season had reignited his love for the game.

The highly respected veteran's re-signing is expected to be a significant fillip for the club, with the deal completed just days before its qualifying final against arch rival Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Ward looms as being a key player in the Giants' quest for a maiden premiership, having kicked 11 goals from 10 games since his mid-year positional switch to the wing.

The contract extension will see Ward add to his 313 games next year, of which 253 have been played with the Giants and 60 with the Bulldogs. He remains the Giants' all-time games record holder.

As revealed by AFL.com.au's Inside Trading earlier this week, Giants youngster Joe Fonti has also signed a contract extension through to 2027. It follows a deal for winger Ryan Angwin penned last week, taking him through to 2026.

The Giants also have deals on the table for free agents Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming, as well as midfielder James Peatling, though all three have attracted significant interest from across the competition.

Great news about Ward - I have a sentimental spot for the original Giants. We have Toby and Coniglio with us till 2026, and Ward now till at least 2025. Alas, I think Kennedy and Haynes will not be with us at the end of the year, and hence the number of original Giants will dwindle to these 3.

Would not be shocked if of the originals Ward ends up being the last man standing.

If I recall Giant Strides has mused that if available, Alex Davies of the Suns could be a good pick-up to assist as a big-body midfielder with our clearance/contested game. This has been reported:

“Alex Davies’ future at Gold Coast uncertain amid trade links to Collingwood

News Sport Network

Off-contract Gold Coast midfielder Alex Davies is weighing up his AFL future.

The Suns have tabled a two-year deal to the 22 year old but it is understood as many as four rival clubs - including Collingwood - have enquired about the big-bodied Suns Academy product, who has played 32 senior games in four seasons.

Davies will sit down with head coach Damien Hardwick to seek assurances about his role in the side moving forward before making any decision on his future.

The 193cm on-baller has struggled to break into the Suns’ midfield in recent season, given the presence of Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell, Touk Miller and Sam Flanders.

He played seven games in 2024 including the final three rounds of the season, in which he averaged 17 disposals and two clearances as part of the on-ball rotation.

Davies reportedly has interest from several clubs including Collingwood”.

END OF ARTICLE

If not Davies would a left-field option be, if he was let go, Will Setterfield who is out of contract at Essendon?

Random thought...

Considering Perryman and Cumming could be on the way out and Haynes is no longer AFL material, seeing Adam Tomlinson, a player signed to another club, sitting next to Phil Davis in the stands on Saturday arvo just made me wonder.

We're potentially losing a lot of experience in the backline.

Tomlinson wants out of Melbourne.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that he could find his way back to the Giants?

I've always liked Tomlinson and I think he consistently plays well.

No. Completely different player to Pez or Cumming. We have Aleer as backup. Don’t need him.
