No but with Nick playing more midfield minutes, it seems Oleg and IQ are both playing with a more attacking edge to perhaps make up for Nick’s loss from that area of the ground.
The mind blowing element to me has been Markov’s retention rate. The reason I never rated him across his time with Richmond, GC and early with us was he could be fumbly and loose with his disposal. Something clicked for him post the Sydney match (he had some moments in that one) and I’m keen to see what him releasing Naicos offers us in tandem with JDG. I don’t think we’ve seen those two paired up through the middle for any extended period of time yet and it’s exciting.

Agree. I think Howe’s return has also had a major effect freeing up IQ, Bruzzy and Markov for a more attacking approach.

Yep. When we only had the two tall defenders, Bruzzy was playing as a core defender who holds defensive shape and not taking off to receive and rebound. He's back to rebounding and he's a bloody good rebounder.

Good point; it does also coincide with Howe’s return. Maybe Nick moving into midfield provided the need, and Howe’s return provided the means.

I think you do whatever is best for McStay's preparation - irregardless of Checkers availability.
Perhaps they chose not playing him in those circumstances was best for his preparation?..

Don’t you dare make up words to justify your position!
I like it. It's a strange one - it's used a fair bit, and sounds good to me - despite the nonsense prefix, but many don't consider it a word. I'm going to continue to use it, irregardless of your views.

That’s fair… as is me hunting you down and making your life a living nightmare from which you can never awaken…

It explains perfectly why we recruited Markov. Fly wanted more running depth and Markov has provided that in spades.

Long term I don’t see a low possession and low metres gained player replacing Nick off the half back flank.

The post draft comments of Dekka suggested that Richards was also targetted for that same reason. But they mustn't have liked what they saw when they played him in defence during preseason.

Yeah possible - I don't really understand it, but know very little about modern preparation. However, the injury report did say he wasn't at training at the start of this week - so I'd be guessing that he was actually sick.

Players had time off Sunday and Monday as far as I’m aware so I don’t know how much he’s actually missed. I’ll buy in if he doesn’t train today because I would be surprised if he missed an indoor session yesterday for an illness that kept him out of a match on Sunday 👍

His game in the preseason scarred me for life. Maybe it was a matter of learning the gameplan because he’s been excellent during the home and away season.

Medium term I see Crisp getting less midfield minutes and replacing Nick at half back. He does everything Markov can but better.

It was a rough one wasn’t it. I was struck by the dearth of improvement since he’d burst on the scene against us that night in 2016 (I think). Since then though it’s been an incredible contrast. It’s a Toovey like ascension. Pace is a wonderful thing.

When I first joined bigfooty and argued Collingwood needed more pace on the list I was often shut down the line “A well kicked footy travels faster than any player”

I’m glad the advantages of being fast are being more appreciated on here.

I think that stacks up. Foot speed will never trump speed on the ball and as you highlighted with your comments re Ryan playing the Buckley way we were missing both foot and ball speed back then. The interesting one though was analysis on Fox of how IQ was moving the ball on v GC. Despite having the legs to gain separation he chose to give straight away a number of times. Whether it was a coaching instruction I’m not sure, but it was a good pick up. Either way pace is always going to be in vogue with me!

It does, but if you don’t have pace you can’t create overlap run, and if you can’t create overlap run your very fast kick through the air tends to land right in the lap of the opposition’s intercept markers, who are easily able to position themselves about 45m from where you’ve disposed of the ball from the back of stoppage.

I pulled the trigger on that post a smidge early so it wasn’t quite fleshed out, but totally. That overlap is what allows for you to transition out the back with the aggressive positioning of defensive grids these days. The overlap isn’t quite as effective without foot speed so it takes a balance and by ball speed trumping foot speed I purely mean that no one can outrun the ball in motion.

One of the most underrated elements to it is also that decision making on when to go and when to stay at the contest. At that level all it takes is three steps before your opponent decides and you’re out. Having reliable ball winners in there like JDG and Mitchell makes that decision chain a lot easier as well.

.Crabbed as it may seem, it is a real word. I checked it up some years ago when the principal at my school used it and I didn't believe it was real.

A lot of dictionaries don't include it and when it is included it is usually noted that it's non-standard. Irregardless of that, it gets used more often than many words that are in dictionaries, so it's more of a word than them if you ask me.
