There's a bunch of times McHenry dropped his eyes and hit up someone in the forward line.

I guess you can argue everyone in the AFL should be doing that, but for whatever reason they don't.

He has his obvious flaws, but this is one of his strengths.
IMO McHenry's a pretty good kick & reliable goal kicker .....my problem, and it's one of the attributes of how I define a good player, is Ned double clutch's too many balls ....he is not one touch with his hands & this causes additional pressure on himself & opportunities to move the ball on to advantage disappear

The other junior attribute of his, evasiveness, has not been evident at the AFL level

Reliable goal kicker? He kicked 13.

Give him a set shot or a shot on the run from 30 out in front and yeah he’s not bad. Ask him to snap, checkside or kick a goal from 40 plus out and good luck. Skills a small forward should be able to do.

It helps that the stats don't include the shots from 40m that fall 10m short...

There's very little depth to his kicking, which is probably while he drops his eyes and looks to go short.

Funnily enough, I've gone back over the Christmas holidays and watched our wins again, just to fill time and because it's enjoyable.

Which will no doubt gives me a misguided view of how decent we looked last year ...

In the wins, McHenry invariably does two or three really good things. I wonder if the coaches are giving more (too much?) weight to how he looks when we're playing well?

I do wonder as well how Ned will look when he’s got a hopefully improved Rachele and Rankine taking some attention off of him

Might take away some pressure, allowing him to play with more of a cool head. Might

The thing is do they really rate him? He was one of the only players to play nearly all the season and yet didn’t make the top 10 of our B&F. How does a guy who didn’t earn coaches votes apparently be loved by the coaches and be a walk up start?

McAdam did playing 5 less games and going off injured in at least 1.

I don't believe in evidence, I just trust my own eyes ...

There's probably a few out there, but he does two or three in these highlights, when he gets 3 goal assists. It was the first video I looked at, as 3 GA's is about as good as he's ever done.

You just believe in your “evidence” and ignore the rest ;)

If Ned's in the forward line alongside those two (and McAdam, Walker, Fog, TT) his job aint to be getting the footy.

It will be to block, tackle, chase, harass and keep the ball inside 50 once its there.

Agree, but when he does get it, the opposition will likely be paying less attention to him nonetheless

I doubt his production would go up, but he might be seen to do more 'good' things in the eyes of coaches and especially supporters

Again, it's not a sure thing

Or maybe we could do the smart thing and just play a more talented player? and shuffle McFlurry back to the SANFL

For all the talk about the pressure he brings, the tackle and pressure stats just don't support that view

I mean Pedlar could well overtake him this year, who's definitely the better talent. Just saying that if Ned does keep his spot in the side, he mightn't look quite as average, with quality smalls that can carry the brunt of the offensive work surrounding him (rather than fellow 'meh' forwards like Rowe and Murphy)

He's in the forward line and he doesn't have to get the ball or score?

We've invented the easiest role in the league and he's still a failure.

Yeah I was a DMac critic but he was far better than McHenry. At least he was just aggressively average and a plug and play type that you knew what you'd get.

As mentioned above, McHenry is essentially Petrenko - a below average player. They're career statistics are eerily similar.

It's incredibly unlikely any of Neddy's issues will suddenly fix themselves after 50 AFL games.

I guess the answer is who was replacing him at the time? Certainly I would have liked Newchurch in when he had that cracking game but there really wasn’t anyone else banging the door down for his role

I guess we will find out round 1 now that we have options

With Rankine and hopefully Pedlar coming in I was assuming Murphy would be relegated to the ressies.

And I thought he was dropped last year, but now I look at the stats he still played 17 games.

Obviously he should be dropped but I'm not sure the coaches are going to see it this way?
