Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

I think they’ll burn the Saints amenities down if they let him go
The Saints honestly have a very nice crop of young talent coming through (King, Phillipou, NWM, Owens, Windhager, Wilson to name a few), reckon they can really build something in a few years if they can keep them all together

If we are talking wish list this close to Christmas, mine is the premiership team on 2027:

2024: adl first + future first for phillipou and St kilda second
2024: melb 2nd and St kilda 2nd for Welsh
2025: free agency H Petty
2026: free agency J Lukosius

2027 team:

You can never have enough midfielders!

These 3 are all capable of playing as misfielder/forwards.

We need more than 3 midfielders... we need 3 gun midfielders.
Correct.

To win the flag, not only do you need an elite midfield, you need to bat deep in it as well.

Thats not even taking consideration the potential for injury.

Based on his decent 1st year for a kid that was the youngest player in the 2022 draft, born 4 days later and he'd have been in this year's draft. Rising Star nomination in round 8. Will be an absolute topliner...bookmark it.
I hope you are right and in which case, as you and others say, he becomes a priority (provided he's playing predominately midfield).

A midfield has to bat deep to be considered elite IMO, they're not two separate things

Usually, all four or five players in an elite midfield rotation are very good, or better. The two grand final sides are perfect examples of that (Daicos/De Goey/Pendles/Mitchell/Crisp vs Neale/Dunkley/Clug/Ashcroft/Bailey)

Incredible that people couldn’t rate Phillipou first season in afl

As you say was the youngest player in the league last year and never got dropped in a team that played finals

Remarkable season

And some of the classy stuff he did , just moments but who cares , that’s all you need at that age

Will be a genuine elite star , all I’d want to see is that he’s come on since another pre season and I’d be all in

Preference over Oliver too

Is Phillipou on the list based on pre-draft standing or on actual AFL output? I'm not seeing it. The ability doesn't match the size of the ego IMO.
AFL output like playing every game in a finals side while being barely 18 yo under a coach who is famous for not backing in youth and wanting ready made players ?

Yep

It’s the only reason I would take him, even then Im still not sure it’s a need
I don't think you turn down talent that wants to come home if best 22. It does come down to cost of course, but the club sees a lot in this kid - I think the whole AFL will be watching him a bit closer once he returns from injury.

I’m interested to see how he goes playing forward in 2024 , don’t reckon our defence needs him

If he kicks > 45 goals I’d be interested
You haven't watched Petty a lot, have you ....huge difference between pitch hitting as a fwd ....and playing fwd FT

History is littered with these stories .....most famous is Silvagni (the middle one) .....who pitched hit, and nearly always kicked goals ....but he's in the Hall Of Fame as a DEF

That’s where he’s playing in 2024

Hard to judge him as a back if he doesn’t play there next year

Would you spend 900k on him and early picks as a defender if he plays forward all year in 2024 and we have good defenders already ?

He's playing FWD ....because MELB need him fwd ....it's not Melb deciding Petty's a better fwd than def

The plan obviously has always been Petty as May's replacement .....Van Rooyen should also be stronger in 2025

Given I've been a fan of Petty since his U18 year .....absolutely I want him ...$900K is pie in the sky stuff

So how are you going to judge him for value as a 900k defender if he plays forward ?

Also if you trade for needs and our backline performs next year which I think it might , how can you justify paying someone 900k and multiple high picks for a role you don’t need ?

It’s not a lock , it’s a maybe

So how are you going to judge him for value as a 900k defender if he plays forward ?
Because I've watched every game he's played as a Defender at AFL level .....he's a Premiership Winning CHB ....not a forward !

Probably not.

Wait another year & go after him as a FA.

Trade Butts.

We just don’t get young players coming home to SA very often before their second contract … do we?

JHF was a bad choice by North, should have taken the offers from Adelaide teams before the draft.

I think we need to focus on the players that want to come here, not the ones that we dream of being in the tri-colours with no real indication that it’s a possibility.

So for me.

Petty is a lock. Top line defender, that can switch hit. Tick. He wants to come, I think we get him over the line next year.

Oliver is a superstar midfielder. I would say he is in the top couple of players in the league when he is firing. He seems to have identified us as a legitimate option through Burgess. We must take him and any perceived risk if he is available.

You take Hayward if he is coming via free agency. Always take the free hits to make your squad better. We just need to capitalise on SA players coming home whenever possible.

Isaac Cumming is an example of another possible free hit. Just keep improving the squad.

I don’t think we get Phillipou. We don’t live in a pie in the sky world where every super talented youngster comes to us for unders.

We will have the opposite problem with Soligo and Rachele … every VIC team throwing the kitchen sink at them, hopefully we have them under lock and key for the most productive parts of their careers!
