Playing in our defensive setup means you get belted up a lot more than in other clubs defenses (ours leaves our defenders having to put their bodies on the line more and being wide open to being jumped into more). He was mighty sore for a lot of last year. As were a few others (ROB, Doedee, Dawson the other bad ones). If it happens again this year I could see him thinking to himself, stuff this, I'm going elsewhere.
Nah he will get stronger and cope better and those around him will help him more

Be very surprised if Butts leaves

Doedee however …..

Also don’t mind if Doedee leaves if compensation is ok as we have Michaelanny who I think will be a better version and we have Worrell

I hope NWM is still homesick. Our 2024 first would be a fair price and we get rid of it before a potential bid on Welsh.

Day won’t leave Hawks.
Mitchell and the hawks love Day and he is one of their key planks , even being played in mid this year

Agree re NWM …. Saints are soft targets , we should be into him and Phillipou in next few years

Pickett would go to port you’d think , NWM could be a chance for Port as well as us

Port wouldn’t have any collateral unless quality players leave

I think Doedee is gone. Shame we never got to see the best of him here really.

They’re often not afraid to let one go if it helps them long term eg Wingard

But yeah I reckon Pickett stays at Melbourne in any case

I personally think we should be scouting Sparrow closely rather than Pickett

Edit - and Petty
Sparrow is no better than Soligo, Berry, Schoenberg, Pedlar and Dowling etc. Pass.

He’s been good enough to warrant interest from other clubs

Few injuries held him back from absolute peak , but overall he’s been good not great

He might stay but I sort of wouldn’t mind him going to help balance out list given I love Michaelanny and Worrell

Not true. We bag the poor ones and want them replaced with better ones. We want to win a premiership.
Sure. I agree. I think every single supporter of every football club in existence wants that.

The trouble is - i think if we got many of the players that the board think would be "better ones", we'd turn on them pretty quick. Let's say we got Draper, say - I think we'd be ecstatic for about a month, until we started to get frustrated with his free kicks and clumsiness, and he'd go straight onto the shitlist we had O'Brien on.

The Doedee hate, I find incredibly hard to fathom .....OK, so he played injured in the back half of the year ....suddenly he's dispensable, 12 months after everyone wanted him as our next Capt

Fickle !

No hate from me , happy if he stays and ok if he goes given we have cover

Hope he has an injury free year to show his absolute best

Jeff, if you keep letting experienced players go, you'll always be developing ....and never contending

And that means, players like Dawson will not be part of any premiership

I never wanted him captain. Not a huge fan of defender captains.

He's been an ok to good player for a short period of time. His best season was his debut season, which whilst good for a first year player, nowhere near the level of a premiership player in that position.

If he ups his game in 2023 I'll want to keep him because a peak Doedee, Worrell, Michalanney trio would be Geelong lite and enable more drive from the back half.
If he doesn't improve, Murray is probably the better option value wise (unless we get our claws on Himmelburg senior).

Why not both ? ....Doedee is still our best Defender on 2022 form .....no-one talks the howlers of games Butts & Murray put in .....if the were AFL dependable, we wouldn't need Dawson back to cover for them

But they escape analysis ?

Experience isn't that important if they're not in the very good category. Salary cap only goes so far.
Doedee's not very good ? ......Murray worth Doedee's money ....or Butts ?

The "grass is greener" philosophy rarely works .....case in point, Poulter will be out of the AFL system after 2 years ....we said he was average, the industry agrees

Old mates down the road are up to their necks in Pickett if you believe the noise and see him as their missing piece apparently, without the draft picks trading a Georgiadis or the like would be their only option , NWM and Picket both out of contract at years end and us with an extra second surely we can broker some sort of deal for NWM.

from the saints board , this bloke highly regarded has a very good history .

No, currently, Doedee isn't very good.

Butts, Murray, Worrell, Michalanney, Doedee I think will be too tall.

In fairness you are comparing apples and oranges. Doedee is not remotely a KPD and we have plenty of similar size/style players to him which is why some on here - me too - think he could be dispensable at the right price

He is arguably our most courageous though so you wouldn’t just give him away, and he is a good player so has some decent value. We don’t have much collateral in our list for trade that we could afford to lose. Doedee is probably the one from that perspective

However I don’t think anyone is wishing or hoping he leaves. He is a good player. It’s just he is the best player we have that we could afford to lose

We had a shot at the Dee's Kade Chandler a whole back which was surprising...and he turned us down.

Doubt we'd look at him now with Rankine etc on board.

Story in the media that the Dee's are chasing Pickett's best bud Liam Henry in an effort to keep him.

Dawson might be a defender captain 😉

If it was me I’m offering him a decent contract without overpaying in knowledge that if he leaves we have Michaelanny and Worrell

I like him but it’s not as if we won’t survive without him , we aren’t pushing him out, it’s up to him

It also happens with players on our list , the ones that don’t play we overrate

Eg Straughan , Cook , Newchurch

At least we got Worrell right , he should have played alot more
