Sam Naismith will be a big chance to be picked up if a club needs a mature age ruck

You’d think Naismith or someone like Brandon Ryan (who is more of a forward/ruck) would definitely be on their radar.
The problem with that thinking is that a lot of our talls are going to be back by or around mid-season.

None of them are season long injuries - Cameron is only 4-6 weeks away now, Aiden Begg will be a test to return through the VFL next week, and we're still waiting to get a definitive timeline on Cox, but hopefully it's not too long once that comes in.

McStay is looking at 7-9 with the finger, but even that still only puts him at Rd 13-15.

If we were to get bad news on Cox (and honestly, if he gets medical advice not to play due to internal damage to his spleen, I hope he DOES retire) then maybe we could look at a dedicated mature ruckman as cover, but I think someone more versatile would be the better option if we even end up having space for a mid-season draft pick.

My short list at this early stage would be:

Luke Teal
Kobe Ryan
Ryan Maric
Clay Tucker
Sam Gilbey
Shaun Mannagh
Ryley Stoddart
Boyd Woodcock
Brandon Ryan
Jack Buller
Ethan Phillips
Casey Voss

Anyone looking for a ready to go midfielder could do worse than have a look at Woodville-West Torrens Mitch Hardie, absolutely killing it in the SANFL.
That's the problem!

They were meant to use this draft as a chance to find a ready made, experienced senior player that could step in quickly to fill an urgent need created by injuries.

Instead, we have clubs making a play for kids that they didn't have the guts or knowledge to draft in November.

I'm all for seeing kids drafted in the main and rookie drafts. I wouldn't put in the work here otherwise but how many chances do AFL clubs need to get things right.

To be fair on the clubs, it is a little bit harder now to commit to players in the drafts with the reduced list sizes.

Well, make the lists a little larger in November. I'm sure they can afford it.

SANFL and WAFL clubs in particular are still a business - doing their level best to gain and appease members and supporters, get the turnstyles and bar clicking over and winning a premiership - as well as developing draft picks.

Get it right in November and everybody benefits.

Look at what Fremantle have done to Sebit Kuek since they drafted him mid-season 2022.

Yes, I get it - the AFL is bigger than the game itself now and everyone else can go get effed.

Greedy, selfish out of control juggernaut with no hall of mirrors anywhere to be seen.

His name has been mentioned on a bulldogs website as a potential MSD chance - probably unlucky to be delisted really.
Killing it in the VFL. 32 touches, 2 goals and 6 tackles against Footscray.

Ethan Phillips was desperately unlucky last draft too. With McCartin's situation, do Sydney pounce?

Corey Preston another potential. Has trained with the bulldogs for a pre-season so is on some radars.

It really does hurt the state league sides, particularly so if they are in contention. There really should be more financial support if a player is taken in the MSD.

On a side note I think investment in grass roots footy needs to expand rapidly. The population is growing yet so many local clubs both metropolitan and country are struggling to field sides in their junior age brackets. It really doesn’t matter which state you look in either.

How Harrison Arnold(KPD) who is a top up player for our VFL side is not on an AFL list is beyond me, has been killing it in the VFL for a few seasons, good disposal, great interceptor and cool under pressure. I would love him on our list.

This already exists.

Luke Teal (21 disposals, six marks, five rebound-50s)

"A young player that has played a couple of games in the Coates Talent League in the first few rounds, but we've been really glad to be able to welcome him back into the fold. His ball use in particular on the weekend was a highlight and he's extremely reliable down back."

Collingwood surely would be looking for a ruck losing so many talls.
If we had a available list spot. Which we don't, unless we don't think Howe will play again this year.
Cox could be back next week or the week later at worst.
