The article has a point. The MSD is essentially the AFL declaring every other league doesn't matter and can be messed with in the middle of the season so that AFL clubs can pad out their reserves teams. And plenty of those players get chewed up and spit out after 3-4 months on a list, which is a very short time to adapt to a new environment and prove your worth. This year's MSD should be the last.

Fair point. If every player demanded an 18 month contract it would make the MSD a lot better.

Working full time as a footballer for a 5 month contract worth probably $40k and having to quit your job is a big shift if you get delisted at the end of October.

Don’t they get a $50k payout, on top of their rookie contract, if they are delisted after 4 months?

So its $70k which isnt too bad for 5 months, but still required them likely quitting their job/delaying their training/education/etc.

Also, they may not know that the $20k is coming if the club doesnt warn them that they wont be retained, which makes planning difficult.
I’m sure most player managers explain everything to their clients.

Will we be able to see the picks as they happen or will the AFL just release a list once its done?

Pretty classic AFL hubris.

Not hard to fix this though with minimum 12m contracts. No need for the 18m minimum, 12m is reasonable and would give more legitimacy to the MSD draft, likely enabling every club to have a selection rather than rely purely on injuries, whilst also being better for the player
