Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

I agree, Duursma and McKercher fill needs, and with Zurhaar and TT RFA and OOC, it is a bit of insurance.

Many of our mid forwards are postionally versatile, and I still remember the Geelong teams where from week to week, I could not tell if Chapman and Stevie J were extra mids, or deep forward scoring threats. One week they would get 27 touches, and the next multiple goals from limited touches.

I know there's a number on here who are holding out hope for Curtin, but I really can't see that happening for a few reasons.

It'll be two of Mckercher, Duursma, Watson and Sanders, likelihood of them being selected in that order.

I'd suggest after that group, we'd have guys like Caddy and Leake next in line.
Who knows which way the Club will go but if we're talking non midfielder selections I'd be surprised if we'd take Watson before Curtin.

The back line we've fielded in the last couple of years is the worst back 6 the Club's stumped up for more than 50 years and that's despite Sheezel slaying it.

There are blokes running around in defence who are VFL players at best - and that's probably being generous.

I'm not sure exactly what the knock is on Curtin in not going top 3 - but the vision suggests the Club will think real hard about passing up on an elite talent like him given our woeful deficiencies down back.

Call me crazy, but an elite forward half player is a need for us. We do have a few forward flank types, but none have been consistent or good enough to justify passing on an elite prospect. Duursma is likely to be better then all of them (bar Sheez).

If Zurhaar cracks the sads, tough s***.

Understand your point of view, but id counter by saying none of TT, CZ, Curtis or Stephenson are near their prime.

If Zurhaar leaves and becomes a 50+ goal a year player, which he is clearly capable of, then this move would have backfired.

Plus we cant expect every 1st year player is going to be like Sheezel.

Yep, Stephenson is way past his.

And I'd counter that Duursma's ceiling is considerably higher then all bar TT (who is no guarantee to remain at the club) as well as has the flexibility to play multiple other roles if developed correctly.

Zurhaar isn't leaving because we draft Duursma. He certainly isn't getting pushed out by a kid and going onto kick 50+ goals elsewhere. Get a grip.

So we are going to draft a kid at 3 but not expect him to play?

Why cant Zurhaar kick 50+ goals. In 2 of our last 4 wins he has been in our top 2 players.

Are you saying they play alongside each other?

Some strange statements in your post.

3 years time (assuming all stay and all “make it”

Bull Larkey Dursma

Curtis Comben George

Ford on the bench

Thomas and simpkin spending some time forward when not in the midfield

Sheezel using his running power on the wing

If comben doesn’t make it due to injury you can try going smaller as all those guys can mark above their heads.

Can’t afford to loose Zuhaar at the end of the year.

Yet the Daicos brothers just won flags and a copeland.

Such an ancient way of looking at the game.
Thats hilarious. Nick averages more contested possessions than Simpkin! Josh more than Sheezel. For contested possessions Stephenson is ranked 100th for Medium forwards. He's scared shitless of a hard ball. No one can deny that, no one.

If you think the Daicos brothers are soft then you must think our entire squad bar Wardlaw is tissue paper.

Ironic. I don't think my statements are strange. I think that you have a preconceived idea of our best 22 in a few years time and as a result are making decisions based on what you perceive as what our needs will be. I personally have much more of an open mind of what our best 22 will be in a few years and am not going to be neglecting serious talent due to hope that guys that haven't been delivering, eventually do.

So we are going to draft a kid at 3 but not expect him to play?
Didn't say that. I said Zurhaar isn't going to get pushed out by Duursma.

Didn't say that. I said if Zurhaar was to be pushed out by a kid in our 22, it would be very unlikley he goes onto kick 50+ elsewhere. This is because to be pushed out of our 22, you aren't very good.

Are you saying they play alongside each other?
There is absolutely no reason as to why they cannot play alongside each other. They aren't two ruckman. In fact both are quite versatile.

Apparently there's something floating around saying that Wet Coast have "formally" committed to taking Reid.
strange wording considering the only way to 'formally' commit is to actually draft him. clearly there's a lack of understanding about the difference between formally and informally doing something.
