Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

Massive fan of Goad and his scope for development. I think anywhere after pick ~20 is reasonable for him. He needs to improve his ability around the ground but the flashes he's shown, particularly with his contested marking, is really exciting. I personally have Mitch Edwards and Will Green ahead of him, but I'd take him after those 2.

Yeah I wasn't big on Moir and then he's not done himself any favours with his form this year. He has really nice skills and is quite a dynamic but he lacks a defensive side, is an awkward size and doesn't have stand-out athletic traits that might keep him in good stead at AFL level. I'd look at him with a 3rd rounder or rookie selection but certainly not before then. I also don't see versatility in his game; it seems that he is a medium forward or nothing, whereas I'd like to see the ability to work further up the ground as a midfielder, winger or even tried as a defender.

I really like Collard but there's some worry about the go home factor with him along with his impressive performances all coming this year at WAFL Colts level. He struggled in the step up to U18 Champs and didn't have a notable underage year last year.

Thanks for taking the time for your input, I appreciate it, good insights. :)

In my mind, we simply have to make the most of our two priority picks for next year because I don't see us being able to go back to the AFL well again. Bundling them up with pick 2 in an offer for pick 1 just doesn't cut it. Seems like a massive waste to me.

Sounds like there's a lot of competition for GC pick 10 so not sure if bundling the two of them up may not be enough?

I also don't think they would be enough to target Geelong's pick 7?

Carlton's pick 16 and Fisher for the two priority picks might be over paying? Maybe a future something coming back our way?

Maybe Sydney's picks 23 and 31 and Stephens for the two priority picks and then on trade 31 to Carlton for Fisher? This would leave us with 2, 3, 15, 21, 25 or something?

If the kid wasn't Western Australian in a year when West Coast holds pick 1, and if the kid wasn't the best key defender in a year when North Melbourne holds pick 2, would anyone be discussing this kid as a top 4 prospect?
Heading into this season, the consensus top 10 seemed to be:
Reid
Moir
Curtin
Duursma
Walter
Caddy
Watson
Mckercher
M.Edwards
Lorenz

Curtin has always featured in the top 5 all year as has Walter and of course, Reid at 1 all year.

The sub picks are a bonus. Picks 2 and 3 are literally a once in a generation opportunity. What we do with these two picks is everything. We nail these two and we are competing for 5 to 10 years

Cal linking us to McKercher and Duursma with Curtain slipping to Melbourne potentially even GWS.
Would be worth trading down from 3 if we could snare Dees or Giants F1.
I'd guess that we may have just met with them recently and recruiters/media may have gotten wind of it. Could it be a tactic from us to get Dees/Hawks/GWS/Cats to trade up for 2 or 3 perhaps if we're keen on somebody in the 4-7 range and another late 1st?

Some interesting top 10 national combine results

Darcy Wilson

2nd 2km time trial
8th agility test
6th standing vertical
1st running vertical

Connor O’Sullivan
8th 2km time trial

ZZ Top
6th 20m sprint
5th agility test
1st standing vertical
6th running vertical

If you told me a recent basketball convert would have those results as a 196cm well built kid, and outplay Curtin on grand final day, I’d say draft him.

Nate Caddy
10th agility test
Where was or is ZZ Top expected to go ? Phenomenal results.

Is there any danger Curtin is a rich man's Sam Durdin?

Very very raw. Doesn’t look like he knows how to “footy”. Yet.

But his rapid improvement bodes well.

Normally I’d say he’s a 35+ type of pick.

But I’m confident someone will pick him up in the 20’s based on his testing, potential, and rate of improvement coming from basketball 2 years ago.

If we don’t secure Reid, I’m hoping we pick McKercher at 2 and then explore options for splitting 3 with a pick somewhere around 6-8 and a further one in the teens. Getting at least one one of Curtin or Sullivan would be so important for list composition.

People (ie, us) misread his junior role and form; in his draft year he stood out as a ruck, where it was less noticeable his marking wasn't that good.

So only my view, but no, from what I've seen/understand about Curtin, the debate is whether he's a KP or tall HBF (and he's a better kick than Sam ever was)

Zero chance of 2-3 for Reid.

I think fair comparison to look at is what Judd got. Prob biggest deal in AFL for one player.
It was pick 3, Kennedy (pick 4 on prev year) and pick 20.
If they got 2, 14 and future end of first it would be reasonable but still overs

Absolutely but also not forgetting that it wasn't draft year Judd that we are comparing with here. It was Brownlow Medallist and premiership captain Judd. He was a proven all-time great whereas Reid is just potential.
