Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

Nah apparently LDU may be traded if we draft Kerch according to DuckYeah. Madness. As if they couldn't co-exist.
Thats not what I said. What I said was is Kerch doesn’t bring much to our midfield because we have all his shit covered. He’s the most overrated draft prospect ive ever seen. This board has gone nuts over him and I just can’t see it.

Notwithstanding bids pushing picks down the order:
  • Take McKercher at #2
  • Trade #3 for #6 and #11 from Melbourne
  • Take Curtin at #6
  • Trade #15 and #18 for #8 from Geelong
  • Take Watson at #8
Still have #11 and #17 to play with.

Easy.

Followed by 'We've got a few list needs. By picking talent we are going to address some of those'

Translation. I'm not telling you nothing.
I took him to mean that they are drafting based on talent, but in the process of that some list needs will be addressed.

Then he said that outside run and forward pressure are list needs.

So don't be shocked if we draft McKercher, Duursma, Wilson (trade up), Collard and talk about addressing needs.

A showcase of the silky smooth and versatile Daniel Curtin at his best over the course of the 2023 season.

Pretty underwhelming marking display for what is supposedly the best key back in the draft. Don't really want to spend a top 3 pick on a tall half back flanker that aspires to play midfield and publicly states he would love to stay in Perth.

I took the talent reference as largely meaningless: 'we have decided not to draft any talentless hacks this time around'.

And I choose to be shocked if that is who we draft. All guns, no doubt. But completely missing the best chance we will get to fix the list balance properly.

Jacko might not be part of the next flag side, but part of the squad that year, and a key cog in the team that gets us there.

I can see him playing 100 games

There’s been some pretty ****ing ordinary players receive premiership medals over the journey. Clarko’s Hawthorn aren’t immune from that either.

Did feel like McKercher/Duursma is the smart money, based on what he said.

If it's anything different on draft night, then credit to Thursfield for being elusive.
There were three tangible clues he offered about what we are after, aside from talent: talls, outside pace, and forward pressure.

I thought the last one was interesting because I don’t know who in our pick range provides forward pressure, aside from Collard.

Taking Kerch may mean LDU is traded out

Given 18 teams and draft/junior footy experts have him rated so highly, I think that’s a you problem mate.

He’s a gun, as for having his skill set covered, you’re kidding yourself. This kid will show up most our other mids in stoppage to stoppage gut running from the get go. We’ll also look a lot more dangerous from clearance as we can attack the Fwd line at different angles now that we’ve got a clever left footer in there.

He is the next best available after Reid and Walter, and he’ll be a bloody fantastic footballer in the royal blue and white.

Watson, I guess.

I don't really rate Duursma's forward pressure highly.

I thought I read forward pressure is a weakness for the Wizard?
“He has areas of growth but there is such a value placed on forward 50 pressure in the AFL. Even when he isn’t hitting the scoreboard he is chasing and tackling and putting fear into defenders’ minds with what he could potentially do.”
Tarkyn Lockyer in Herald Sun article

Watto's biggest issue has and will always be his height.

I like McKercher (just pointing this out again because there are some who seem to think I don't rate him, which isn't the case).

My problem is I really like LDU, Wardlaw, and Simpkin as our core midfield too. Who of those three does McKercher replace, because it's not really as if any of those three can play a HF/HB type role. They're all pure midfielders.
I don’t think that you could say Simpkin is a 100% lock 1st choice midfield rotation. I could see someone like McKercher pushing him out in a few years.
