Training 2023 Pre Season

I don’t think there would be too many teams in the league who would knock back someone who’s around 192cm, quick, runs all day, a very nice and long left foot kick, can clunk a mark, who can play a variety of roles, is relatively experienced, can kick big and regular goals, and who tackles well for a guy his size.

I reckon he’s also the type of guy you’d like to have in a finals team, as he could pop up and turn a game with a big goal or two.

Hopefully he’s a Tom Hickey like late bloomer.
There name is North Melbourne.

Will be interesting on Wednesday as may well see a taste of what Ross has planned.
I hope for one it is Cordy who goes to the fwd/ruck role. Has experience in the role and done ok. Not sure he will keep up with Jackson but just has to compete and body up.
Battle and Howard are too important in defense and along with Wilkie formed a good team last year. Its what we should be building around.
Feel like Heath is a bit raw.

Otherwise go small and hope the likes of Membrey/Sharman/Owens/Wood can cover as needed

How about Highmore in Battle's third tall role and Battle forward? Tommy is unlucky not to have played more footy IMO. Was one of our best in the VFL.

Could do a hell of a lot worse than that.

Van Es will be an interesting one.

You wouldn’t usually expect someone who plays key position to be ready from game 1 year 1, but he’s a bit unusual, in that he was already close to 100kg when drafted, yet was still posting elite athletic numbers, so he would presumably be ready to play seniors far sooner than the usual stringbean tall types.

He didn't look out of place / his depth in the 13 v 13 match sims

Josh Walker or Sam Naismith would be the ones IMO. Aware the former has retired and the latter is made of glass but I don't see what else is out there.

We should stick with what we have and make do for that first 4-6 weeks.
Big Boy McEvoy coaxed out of retirement? Less busted up than Ryder when he called it quits.

Membrey/Sharman/Wood combo could work until Max is back

Battle stays back IMO
I fully agree Battle should be settled in defence...

but when you have Wilkie, Coffield and Highmore as extremely capable third talls then switching him fwd makes sense.

Out of the lot of them he was a forward originally and would make the switch most easily.

Okay I'll bite.
Where is Hunter Clark?
Anyone seen him on the track?

People need to calm the farm, as it stands we have 3 players on the long term injury list with 2 of them, King and Hayes expected back playing round 5 and King's injury really only keeping him out of contact training so his fitness base wont be an issue. The other in Hotton is like 10 players back in the midfield group at this stage so we can afford to let him sit back and heal up properly.

The rest of the players are on management programs but still training and meeting their required work loads. People worried about our Rucks despite Campbell still pencilled in for the pre-season matches at this stage.

Obviously an ideal world is everyone 100% fit but this NEVER happens at the AFL level so as long as we dont cop any more season ending injuries we will be alright.

Tom Campbell is shaping up to be an important player this year. Hopefully he gets back to full training soon because he'd be a lock for my round one team if available. Here's hoping the large group of players doing non-contact work or restricted training is quite precautionary. At the moment it seems like only King, Hayes and Hotton are completely ruled out for round one.

B: Paton, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Sinclair, Battle, Wangmil
C: Hill, Steele, Wood
HF: Gresham, Membrey, Owens
F: Higgins, Sharman, Campbell

Foll: Marshall, Crouch, Windhager
Int: Billings, Clark, Coffield, Ross
Sub: McKenzie

Emg: Jones, Butler, Webster, Bytel

If we move him out of defence it leaves us with Cordy and Battle as the main guys in defense.
Well Wilkie was backed to play on the oppositions best or 2nd key forward a lot more than Battle was last year.

Either way it's not great. Battle as good as.he was is still very much unproven as a one on one key defender. He played a lot more like a third tall does.

I’m pretty sure Gibcus debuted in round 1 for Richmond last year!

You’ve made a bloody good fist of it..query over Campbell & I reckon young Mattaes will be in the 23!

Training was not all a bed of roses..with quick ball movement, quality foot and hand skills are required.
Too many sloppy kicks today, something that has been a common theme for many years!
On the plus side, youngsters Windhager, Owens, NWM & Phillipou were impressive, with Owens clunking a couple of big grabs up forward plus his strength & second efforts noticeable.
Windhager’s running power tremendous, linking up beautifully with teammates…his kicking was generally good.
Such a shame about Jack Hayes, sometimes there’s no justice in sport.

are they working on "quality foot and hand skills"?

We don’t realise until we look at your emergencies just how far we have come in the last couple of seasons, with Jones, Butler & Webster waiting for a game.

On a side note when picking a team one has to pencil in one of RTB left field players that few of us will ever be able to predict. 🥴

are they working on "quality foot and hand skills"?
Yes they are but there are too many players that can’t properly hit a target, even under no pressure..I don’t expect perfection but there were far too many skill errors yesterday.
The boss is much more involved now so he’ll sort the wheat from the chaff!
