Training 2023 pre-season

So Essendon have named Zach Merrett as their new captain.

First pre-season game this Friday, no indication of our leadership group, but presumably will be announced in the near future.
Last year's elevation of Mills was reported 2 Feb.

Heeney in an interview recently put his hand up for a leadership role. I think it's generally agreed that Gulden is a future (present?) leader.

Last year our leadership group was seven strong - Mills, Parker, Rampe (captains) plus JPK (after stepping down as skipper), Cunningham, Franklin & Papley.

JPK obviously gone. Franklin concentrating on his own game this season?
Cunningham retained, even though he lost his place in the team last season? IMO on-field performances should not be the sole criteria for a leadership position (and he has a contract to the end of 2024).
Harry does seem well respected around the place and was a finalist in the 2022 Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award for his work as a Redkite Ambassador.

I assume Mills & Parker will be retained and maybe Rampe steps down to concentrate on his own game and we go with two captains this year?
Rampe stays in the leadership group (as JPK did last year), along with Papley & Cunningham and Gulden, Heeney take the place of Franklin & Kennedy.

So in my suggested scenario that would leave;
Co-captains Mills, Parker
Leadership group members Cunningham, Gulden, Heeney, Papley & Rampe.

Maintains a seven man leadership group but allows for a rejuvenation of that group.

EDIT;
Great minds think alike ???? o_O

My next rant is going to be about why the federal government haven't paid me $5 million lately.

I went Mills, Parker, Rampe, Papley, Gulden, Rowbottom, Lloyd, Buddy (and I only picked those last two because we had to choose 8). I dunno if Cunningham maintains his spot if he's not best 22

I went Parker, Mills, Rampe (may give up co-captaincy though), Heeney, Cunningham, Papley, Florent and Fox (literally a teacher, and one of the only ones to lead by example on GF day).

Hows Blakey going i know he had some Glandular fever, any sign from track watchers that hes back yet in anyway?

Cant see him in that picture on twitter of the team photos if that was most recent
I've noticed him recently in shots at training. Harley said recently his had his time away but won't play this week, with an eye towards playing in the 2nd game to hopefully be ready for round 1

Last Thursday on SEN Parker said Blakey would miss last weekend's intra-club but would go around v Brisbane.

Never had glandular fever but I'd imagine you might have peaks and troughs and although Blakey's was apparently mild it may just depend how he feels on the day.

With regard to the leadership group bit surprised to see Franklin still in it. I thought he might step away to concentrate on his own game.
Also thought Errol might be named in the group this year, but it's player voted so the club has decided to go with them rather than me, which seems like a very peculiar decision. :confusedv1:

Per HB's link in the media thread, Matty Roberts again gets a shoutout for his performance over the pre-season so far. So much attention has been on the new draftees, on Sheldrick, on Gould, but it sounds like Roberts is the one really putting his hand up more than anyone. Really hope he can continue to do so, as I wasn't a massive fan of what I saw from him in the VFL last year, so it could get interesting if he can overtake a few.

Hey I’m a long time lurker and only post when I’m excited, so please Forgive me, I’ve no sense of decorum and had a few tonight.

Is there space for a ‘lesssgoooo’ pump up thread OP and can someone please get it up? I’m of the opinion that we’ll Buck the trend and continue the rise - and there’s only 1 thing that means.

Xx in advance

Ps lesssgooooooo

WHY DID I MISS PAPLEY I WOULD'VE BEEN 8/8 DAMN IT

You also included Gulden and left out Buddy.

But great call on Hayward - I didn't see that coming. I would probably have expected Florent ahead of Hayward. But Florent is a bit more reserved and perhaps that made the difference.
