I don’t want it to end, I love this being in the finals so dam exciting

Me too my man. A lot of people saying we've done so well to come so far so just hoping for the best. But fork that I say! I've waited 23 years for our next Prelim (half my life) and I'm not ready to call it quits this year. No guarantees about next year, look at what happened in 2012. We may be waiting another 23 years if we don't make this count.

I remember the famous SOS speech at 3/4 time in the 99 Prelim where he pleaded to all the younger players like Whitnall, Hammil et al saying this was probably the older blokes last chance to play in a GF. The younger blokes rallied and the rest is history. We need someone to tell them it could be their ONLY chance.

I think that Vossy has a few tricks up his sleeve - that last magnificent goal - was no 'fluke' - have a look at the players that had made full-field runs to be there- Docherty ( in his own words ) supported by the video had multiple players to pick to kick to...McGovern/Kemp/Acres/Charlie were all tallish targets open for a pass. This was obviously a planned set play - two extra tall defenders finding their way deep into forward fifty having left their opposition way behind.

The reason why Melbourne players found a way to make errors late in the game against Carlton last week was the cumulative effects of pressure on the ball carrier over 4 quarters. Carlton players were going in hard and spoiling in the last 5 minutes despite it looking like it was all over. There were examples of repeat efforts and one percenters which made big impacts all over teh ground in that last 5-10 minutes.

That kind of pressure is going to have to be repeated up in Gabba because Brisbane have a potent forward line. I dont think that Brisbane have the midfield strength of Melbourne - what they do have is much better field kicking skill and leg speed. The longer the game goes on - the more both their midfield strengths diminish. So staying in the game is priority one and that will be massive pressure on the ball and winning the ground ball and contests - exactly what Voss has been training the side (and picking the side) to do. Carlton will do better controlling the territory and forcing Brisbane into an arm wrestle.

Brisbane will want to play an open game - this has to be denied them.

Carlton lacks the 'complete' forward line of Brisbane - but that can be made up for with teh type of strong team game and mongrel never say die effort required to win these preliminary finals matches.

If the team plays anywhere near its best - we are right in this. They are a confidence team - don't give them any oxygen.
Don’t want to start anything here but I’m pretty sure Voss said in one of the press interviews he had no idea how Acres & Gov ended up down there, but was very happy they did!

Gov was following Fritsch (who dropped deep for extra cover) & Acres was coming off the ground (after being crunched running back with the flight just before) and then doubled back to the forward line.

Smart players, doing smart things 👍

Voss doesn't give much away in press conferences whilst at teh same time making out that he is a cuddly teddy bear. I would say he would be a good poker player if so inclined.

Sure ' he has no idea' how McGovern or Acers were down there..how about Kemp down there and in the open as well?

I think it was a planned move as soon as Weitering released Hollands- they all had to sprint to make it- except for Acres who si always bobbing up at either end - meanwhile, Charlie had faked a downfield run and lopped back fast to be inside the arc as well...

Carlton had 4-5 targets to kick to - in space it was amazing to my eye -after I processed the Weiterin to Holands to Docherty bit...and saw teh coverage field view- I knew that was planned - too many pieces that dont belong there - were there.

I thought we were 60/40 chance to beat Swans, ended up closer than expected.
A 50/50 against Demons, pretty well how it ended.
Lions we are about 45/55 at the Gabba.
Grand final 50/50 again verses anyone.
Agree at the Gabba Lions are favored and rightly so, very talented team home ground advantage have had a long rest, no traveling, they’ve got it sweet, but that’s on paper only, in reality come game day, things may change end up differently.
This will be another close, strongly contestEd, a real slog.
Go Blues , you’ve done us so proud.

I hope we learn from 99 and from the Dees game last week and pick the right team for the right game plan.

In 99 we got thrashed in the 1st final, then won the next 2 finals going long & direct, along with a bit of Kouta magic. I watched training before the Grand Final and watched their drills. I turned to my mate and said surely they're not going to try the same thing 3 weeks in a row. Sure enough they did, and all 6 Roos defenders were in their best 8. Had zero chance of winning. If for example they changed their game plan again, started Kouta in the centre & SOS at full forward it may have given us a 10% chance of winning if we won the clearances because we weren't going to stop their forwards. When you are underdog, you have the licence to be creative. Parkin was a good coach up to the 80's.

Last game media got stuck into Dees. But they were smart. They went in with 2 extra runners into their 22. They had 2 key defenders, 1 Ruck & 1 key forward. And it paid dividends. They just missed a lot of goals which kept us in the game. Schache was just insurance if one of May, Lever, Gawn or McDonald went down. He can play a bit of all those positions whilst Grundy can only play ruck. Point is they already had an extra 2 runners for most of the game.

We need to have enough run against Lions to cover for pressure acts & overlap run or make sure we have the brutes in at the stoppages to win clearances and go long to our talls.

There are 3 selection permutations the selection committee could make. Interesting to see what they make (expecting the most likely) Pies are in a similar scenario. Whilst we know who Lions & Giants will select.
The games against Sydney and Melbourne where always going to be contested battles, as that is their game plans as well as ours.
The biggest issue we had last week, was lack of forwards. It played out exactly how we expected and luckily we were on the right of the momentum swing at the end.

This game will be different. The Lions will try to open the game up and get the ball on the outside. We will bring our contested footy but also play a more shorter and quicker game to control the outcome. This is our best game plan and the one we score well when everything is aligned and we are focused. We will have a better forward structure and be more potent. These are the game plans we have been practicing and have been working on through for 2 years. Collingwood and Richmond plans are similar to Brisbane's but Brisbane's is more potent due to classy users through the midfield.

The only thing that will beat us on Saturday will be ourselves. We get our minds, structures and contested midfield setups right, we will win.

If we get over Brisbane, how much will be left of us for the big dance? Probably no shame suggesting we played our GF in the PF of 99.
Signs of anxiety ✅

If you look at the 3 other players close by when acres kicked the goal they were Gov (defender) Kemp (defender) and TDK. Like you said smart players. The ball was moving our way and you if you keep moving you are never out of the game.

You could right, simplest answer is Gov following his man not letting them have a loose extra - he pushed to 30m out to give an option.
And Acres busting his butt as per usual and getting back hard after seeing the play start to swing. I’m thinking smart play & hard work.

Went through the stats and came up with a table combining a couple of factors important to the Voss style of play.

Also adjusted it with regards to time on ground so everyone is level, some players on this list have been sub multiple times.

This is the top 15 and this combined stat is really designed to favour mids and half forwards, in it we can see who is impacting most in terms of score involvements and pressure acts.

Obviously the wingers suffer in this combo as they are further away from the action than others.

Hollands and Fogarty the surprises for me.

Cuningham has dropped off from these numbers in the last couple of games, so if it is between him and Owies and Motlop, will be a tough call.

I thought Kennedy and Cuners were looking like the likely outs for Martin/McKay but if you have Hollands in the third out is insanely difficult

Only based on training (I don't know side) but Owies or Motlop look in trouble. Fwd set up was McKay Curnow Martin Docherty Cottrell Fogarty. I assume then one of Owies/Motlop may be sub with the other the 7th forward

I probably would have preferred both in the 22 but have trust in the MC. Guess we will find out in 6.5hrs

The outnumber we had forward at that stage was hard to believe … I remember hearing after the game that Acres was heading to the bench then was told to stay out there and then bolted inside 50 lol

It wouldn't be easy to control a situation like that sitting on the sidelines without personal 2-way radios.
