Autopsy 2023 Rd 10 Blues lose game in first quarter

It isn't our game plan to run in waves.
More to sort of emulate
running in quicksand.
Please add - We take possession of the ball in the back line, look sideways after a good ten seconds, then try and switch and put another teammate under pressure. He then kicks under pressure to a contest that we lose and it comes straight back into our defensive fifty.

Reality this year is we are treading water, not realistic contenders, but at least we might get a decent crack at Reid......
I see a lot in the 2021 Magpie comparison, too lashed to a game style and unable or unwilling to break team rules when the opportunity arises. We too have some significant list cloggers and payroll dominators to shift, so as to make space for the Mitchell or Camerons out there that will add value to the team.
Simply must move on the likes of Martin, Cunningham, Ed, Phillip, Plowman, McGovin (trade), JSOS (trade), Fisher (trade), TDK (trade). We should get some value out of TDK, McGov and JSOS, to at least get the trade ball rolling.
Dow, Kemp, Marchbank, Boyd, O'Brien, Mirkov, Carrol, Binns, Hollands, Cowan all must be given games now and for the rest of the year, they will form the nucleus of the team going forward.
The team I saw today, from the very subdued Carltonian area, was simply uninspired, incoherent, and a complete rabble converting forward entries. We had more shots on goal, AND Moore broke the intercept record, ipso facto we had the ball in our forward line enough times to win the bloody game!!!!!!
So the likes of Cerra, Walsh, Doc, Acres, even Crippa sent the ball into the forward line, but haphazardly. Somehow ridiculously there is still hope this year IF THE PLAYERS LEARN HOW TO KICK THE BALL TO OUR ADVANTAGE...

Exactly. Turnover the ball way too many times running out of defence into centre/ attack and the opposition just pounce.
How many times in the first half did collingwood run ball from defence to attack and convert. There was a stretch where they kicked 4 goals in a row without us touching it. Crazy stuff.
Acres needs to drop his eyes a hell of a lot more. He is number 1 culprit currently

Voss - no tactical sense at all. No plan B. Each week we get massacred with this slow ball movement and yet each week he keeps backing the system. I at least thought he would set some standards akin to the one of the games greatest ever captains. But no he’s this new age ‘woke’ coach who’s afraid to look players in the eye.

Ash Hansen - has the last 2 Coleman medalists at his disposal, yet we are constantly double teamed and have no forward tactic what so ever. Why is there no one ever crumbing when the ball hits the ground?

Aaron Hamill - what had happened to our backline? Aaron Hamill so called team defence. It is an absolute horror show. Where had the intercept marking gone? At least in years past we’d get caught out the back but we’d be an intercepting force.

Tim Clark - besides Cerra everyone has gone backward. Besides the contest where this year we aren’t even winning, what else do our midfields excel at?

Aaron Greaves - coaching director? What does he even do. Absolutely useless! Get rid of him.

Andrew Russell - taking up half the soft cap. Our players can’t run out game, nor are they strong enough. Well past it and needs to be moved on.

Brad Lloyd - been absolutely horrible since he came in. Our football department has continuously underperformed. How has he survived this long?
You left out probably the most underperforming person at the club…..the sports psych….whoever he/she is, should be out the door

Things that haven't changed, that is doing my head in

  • Playing 6 defenders + Doc playing part time back/mid. Needs to stop, been going on way too long. Play 7 defenders, with Doc mid/wing changing forward
  • Jsos in the ruck, enough now. Pies banged on 4 goals while Jack was up against Cameron in the first qtr, basically setup their win. Would rather any of TDK, O'Keffee or Mirkov at this stage
  • Kicking long inside 50 in open play, when having shorter targets. Looking at you, Walsh and Doc
  • On Doc, needs to lower his eyes, rather than a hack kick
  • Still not honouring the handball receive, then chipping sideways to a nothing option
  • Cheating, players running forward of the contest, before teammates gathering possession
  • Get Kennedy back into our stoppages
  • Making a statement, I would drop one of Gov or Saad, just going through the motions
  • Our small forwards just don't work hard enough without the pill
  • Hollands was unfortunately ball watching. Might need a week off
This is a balance of poor coaching and player execution/laziness/selfishness.

On the plus side, thought Boyd worked into the game, was one of our better players. Harry looked more confident. Charlie is unstoppable. Cerra has been our best player this year

Strange, but we look so far from competent, yet not that far away. Really is a fine line, but at this stage, just struggling with connections all over the park

Haven't watched the VFL game yet, so can't really comment on the changes, as yet

80,000 at the MCG today … meant to be a sell out. Suspect lots of Blues fans didn’t bother.
Atmosphere before the game was unlike I’ve ever experienced with such a large crowd.
It was like everyone (including the players) knew what was ahead but had to go through the motions nonetheless.

. Voss's main priority is getting our team defense up to modern standards for once. Considering what a shell of a forward line we have and our midfielders threat level going forward I guess that's a good place to work around.

I'm sorry but have you ever heard of the saying if it's not broken don't fix it?

Vossy has taken what was arguably our greatest strength as a team over the past few years and turned it into an incoherent mess.

We've gotten steadily worse and easier to score against as the year has progressed to the point now that those who were previously muted as AA quality have lost all confidence in their abilities and are generating calls to have a week off.

This isn't just a back six issue. I can't recall the last time our forward half players locked the ball in. It's to the point that I don't think we even think about that aspect of our game anymore and it was a trademark last year generating many additional opportunities.

The media are going to jump on the clip of Voss and Crippa on the bench
I'm ok with that.

Cripps won a Brownlow medal last year.

This year he'd be lucky to be in the top 50 players.

He's the captain and was a big part of the past two coach sackings.

He should be in focus

I did not bother, the result was obvious before the game began.

Agree with all of this.
McGovern looks like he has checked out. Perfect trade option.

Agreed. Let’s be honest a lot of Carlton supporters had bought tickets early in the year and then realised it wasn’t worth it and didn’t show. Then there were the supporters who did show expecting to see not much and were proven correct by quarter time. I was in the latter category. Not much to get excited about at the moment.

Every contest pies front and centre.

Stuff knows where our players are.

Our players don’t even know where they should be spoiling to, where they expect the rovers to be.

Players not bodying the ball or the player. FFS Pendlebury has been doing the same shit for 15 years, and not one player has worked out to ignore the ball and just tackle him.

Too many players kicking skills are deplorable. The only mid I trust by foot is Kennedy, even Cerra burns the ball regularly. Walsh, Acres, Cripps, Ed are deadset disgusting by foot. Ed is like Carrazzo but with worse skills.

Forward line is too predictable. SOS should never play forward. Motlop, Owies and Durdin are either incapable or directed to be in stupid positions. If everyone else knows where the ball is going, how on earth don’t our small forwards?

The problem with trading players like this is you never get equitable value back and they turn it on for a year or two at their next club before playing the same routine.

Agree but slightly concerned he thinks our defense is the issue... I'm not the most strategic game watcher, but to me our poor kicking forward and inability to hit a target consistently in fwd 50, is a pretty big issue. When we do we kick to fwds in a hard position who kick a point and we get little reward for effort and fail to capitalise on any momentum we have. Can someone break down for me why defense would be an issue and the focus not offense ?
He’s talking about the lack of defensive pressure in the midfield. He fired a grassy knoll shot in the presser at the “good players”.
You simply cannot win games without creating turnovers and making the opposition pay going back the other way.

Credit where credit is due...

Well done Vossy, best press conference he has given...
Voss super pissed, gave they players a whack, supporters insight to what our problems are and they are trying to fix it...

I'm actually really glad they know the actual problem...

Another concise, painfully honest and intelligent critique from you Arrow.

Saad has too many credits in the bank to be dropped, definitely would be happy with Gov having a spell
From what I heard about TDK recently, the reason he has not been getting a game in the seniors is mainly to do with issues off field, definitely would bring him back this week though..

Motlop probably needs a stint in the VFL too.

I wish I had more objective and productive answers to offer, just feeling more and more ECO these days, like watching Carlton and going to games is more out of duty/obligation and not the firey passion I used to have (esp as a kid when we were actually good)

Yeah mate our next coach will definitely solve all our issues.

That's how it worked out when we sacked Ratten, Malthouse, Bolton and Teague right?
Were any of them the right appointment?

People bang on about if Richmond had
of sacked Hardwick then they would never have won 3 flags.

Hardwick was useless like Voss is tactically. They surrounded him with the likes of Caracella, Leppitsch, Rutten, McCrae, and of course they had Neil Balme.

Hardwick the arrogant prick got kissed on the old fella and now struts around like the messiah.

If we keep Voss then everyone else has to go.

We are playing like Collingwood in 2021.
That might be true, but what did collingwood do? They sacked Buckley, threw caution to the wind and got an unproven Coach. They embraced flair and lair, they brought back the joy of playing the world's best football code.

I tend to agree Carlton players seem to have a fear of breaking teams rules, it looks stilted and complicated (too complicated for some. Lewy Young?) It's beginning to look like the Bolton and Teague days where self preservation and getting a game next week trumps working for the team.

What would I do? Without knowlege of what happens inside the four walls it is hard to know what to do to turn attitudes around, but I would radically (?) change the personell, encourage risk taking and dash, making this the team rule to which the players must adhere. Play whatever is available in the 2's. Binns, etc. Even Dow (who I don't rate, but make sure he knows this is make or break time). It is obvious we have players on the fringes who have talent, players like Will Setterfield who has been a revelation since joining *. It's not life boats on the Titanic time, it is attitude re-adjustment time.

I'm a huge fan of Jack S, but maybe he need a rest, same as Durdin. McGovern can go play tiddly winks for Sth Freemantle. I don't rate TDK, I don't think he exhibits the atributes of a genuine First ruck, but what was shown today is that the 2 ruck setup is a requirement. The idiocy of Jack up against a genuine first ruck went a long way to gifting them their winning lead.

Ed C is a hero and a warrior. Respect the eff out of him, but he is now becoming a liability. Thanks for your service Ed.

If Kemp is fit, bring him in and play him forward, 3rd tall and target him. Martin and Cunners when fit, must play or be shown the door.

Run at the defence and make the f50 entries from 20-25 mts closer to goal. This gives option for a short kick to a small within range, makes us less predictably C and H focussed. Even skid the thing in low and hard along the ground if need be, and faced with another Moore situation. Do something different. Rule 1. DO NOT KICK IT DIRECTLY TO THE OPPOSITIONS BEST DEFENDER!

Is it cattle? A little, we are slow and lack confidence in skills, which is a spiraliing situation. Lack confidence, miss the kick, lower the confidence, rinse and repeat.

Is it system? Looks like it to me. No cohesion, no buy in. Confusion.

Is it admin/management/board? Very likely. Matheson et al will no doubt have their sticky fingers meddling.

But

I think it can be turned around, and back to reasonable, if not Premiership quality fairly quickly. We just need to stop trying to disprove Einsteins definition of insanity.

The problem with trading players like this is you never get equitable value back and they turn it on for a year or two at their next club before playing the same routine.
He's 29 next year, better to trade now if there's any interest than trust his back/hammies are worth building transition plays around
