Not a good game to judge anything by, but the only ones who really looked like they could play in the seniors were Coops and Highmore. Membrey did a couple of nice things, but got outplayed too much by inexperienced players for my liking- maybe still not 100%?

Sandy don't play with much system- just seems to be bang the ball on the boot and hope for the best.
Need to get on a recruiting drive. Their non listed players really are not up to scratch compared to other teams. Been getting worse by the season. Not since Paul Hudson.

Problem is why would you want to play VFL. You can play in the country league and make serious coin. Hard to attract good players

What sort of differences are there in payment?

Can be harder to get a daytime job in some of those places.
Or you can commute....ewww.

Fair enough, however that issue should apply across the whole VFL competition.

We should be aiming to have non listed players as good as any other AFL club.

The “eye test” tells us that currently they are not.

Sometimes a country club would hook you up a job locally as well. Of course you'd have to be willing to live up there, but if you're in you early 20's it can be pretty sweet - get a job + over $1000 match payment

We pick up real no names and we look more exposed this year because less players are available due to injury. Other sides have a lot more quality VFL level talent supporting they kids and helping train the next tier.

We don't need a stand alone Saints VFL side but we do need to invest in the side we do have. Teaching young players how to get smashed in the VFL isn't a good development model.

Hundred per cent losing guys like Answerth, Seccul , etc really cooked the club. The coaching merry go round has not helped either. I know of multiple Sandy listed players previously listed who were not happy. I think ultimately we need to make it like A Footscray or Geelong VFL side where guys are attracted to play because they may get picked up at the next level.

I dont think any VFL affiliation would suceed with the amount of players we have had unavailable over the past couple of years. That on top of our lack of list depth is as much St Kilda's problem as it is Sandringham. We have had huge list turnover in the past years and none of that would be great for the Sandringham side. It would be impossible for them to plan around whats going on at St Kilda, even with Batchelor's involvement.

The thing that stands out for me is our players apart from Campbell, Heath & Bytel dont appear to play with any passion or care at Sandi. There is definitely still a disconnect there, where it comes from I dont know?

We have a severely unbalanced list when you look at our lack of midfield talent and even running flankers/wingmen. The balance might be better if we had all players available but that never happens at St Kilda. If anything Sandringham could have targetted some more quality in the midfield but again our club would be impossible to plan around.

Cordy has to be worst player on any AFL list, he even looks an ordinary VFL player. Whoever was responsible for bringing him over on a 3 year deal ought to be reemed. On the weekend we had 13 AFL listed players playing, but we were way too tall and slow in defence, had zero in the midfield and were inexperienced in attack. Sandringham have to play all these players, but it wasnt their fault that the team was so unbalanced.

There are a few players picked up out of VFL clubs, but generally they are only playing for the side for 6-12 months. Sandringham havent had any for a while that I can recall, so perhaps they could improve their talent identification? But I dont blame Sandringham for the teams lack of sucess, its St Kilda's responsibility in the main.

Would I love to see the VFL team playing under the Saints colours etc absolutely, but I really dont believe anything about the team sucess would change until we get our own list sorted.

The vfl is a crap comp played at crap grounds. Too many byes. Too disconnected from the senior comp.
Needs a total revamp.

It's pretty much the old reserves grade for AFL clubs with a few non aligned teams that make little sense. Clubs like the Dogs and Cats used to put a lot of time and resources into VFL squads and played players in positions that they would play in seniors and were very integrated into the seniors sides systems. They cashed quality older VFL talent to guide their younger players and carried a bit of ready made depth to cover injury in the seniors.

Not much about our footy department was run well with Finnis at the helm. You can't save your way out of poor form. Often it's not even needing money thrown at it, it's actually the way you focus resources. Bassat looks like he's got much more clue about how much it takes to move ahead and seems to be sending ere ever it's needed to improve. Hopefully we get the right people.

I was surprised to see he had 14 touches, I must have had him mixed up with other players. The thing I did notice was how quick and agile his movements were in tight spaces.

Hopefully he becomes a very good player, something like Butters would be nice. 😃

Would be great, but i'm not sure we should expect a contested beast like Butters.

Owens looks like he’ll have that impact that butters has. That kid has no regard for his personal safety. Actually looking at how Butters has single handedly dragged port into wins some games is a great way to project Owens next year with yet another pre season into him.

I'm kind of hanging my hat on Owens and Windhager as far as winning contested footy in future.

Right now we have Steele : ageing and out of form.
Crouch : Excellent but ageing.
Ross : Can play a decent inside game on occasion but not week in , week out, and ageing.
Jones : Erratic and can't stay on the park.
Gresham :plays a pretty good inside game, may leave as free agent.

Clark : Doesn't seem to be a real contested beast, and keeps getting injured , albeit not due to any chronic condition he has.
Bytel may not be good enough, but has played only 9 full games.
Byrnes and Hotton probably more outside mids.

Let's hope Batch's Leo experiment unearths another on-baller.

Batch’s review dropped.

Interesting ones:

Cooper Sharman

21 disposals, 10 marks, four inside-50s, three rebound-50s

Cooper did a tremendous job to get back and play with not much prep after being the sub for the Saints-Swans game. He chose to play the night before the game and rocked up, and his buy-in was great. He performed really well on the wing, ran really hard and gave us some good looks both ways

Going straight from forward in the afl to the mason wood wing role in the vfl. Lyon would love that. 10 marks pretty good work rate too

Didn’t look like he would be on the list 6 weeks ago, but is doing enough to earn a contract.

I thought he had been decent enough since he got here, obviously needed to work on some stuff, as does eveyone but certainly had talent
He just looked out of favour early with him not being able to get a game with both Membrey and asking out and took a while to find some form in the VFL
